Soul Doctor is a musical about Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and his relationship with the singer, Nina Simone. It is the story of how they use their music to promote understanding between people and make a better world. The show enjoyed a brief run on Broadway in 2013.
In 2018, a Jerusalem production of the show was captured on film. Recently Fathom Events presented a one-night-only release of the film in select theaters to mark the 10th anniversary of the Broadway production. In a time when the world seems more divisive than ever, shows like this one about two people trying to bring people together and highlight the similarities between people rather than their differences are needed more than ever.
The production featured great performances all around particularly that of the two leads, Josh Young in the role of Rabbi Carlebach and Nya in the role of Nina Simone as well as a score full of uplifting songs with music by the actual Rabbi Carlebach. It also featured a special introduction by Lisa Simone, Nina's daughter. All in all, it was a truly engaging and inspiring evening of theater on film.
