1) Democracy Sucks
Professor B has been teaching Political Philosophy 101 at Upper Michigan State for ten years, but now, reeling from rejection by his former lover, Dean Dick Harvey, he drinks during class and uses sock puppets of Plato and Socrates to convince his students that DEMOCRACY SUCKS. There’s an online petition to have him fired. His only hope is an outstanding rating from his students on the Course Evaluations. To get them, he reaches back into his past as a theater kid at the Stage Door Summer Camp to give his students the most exciting last class on democracy in the history of Upper Michigan State.

2) Bacchae
In BACCHAE, Dionysus, god of wine and revelry, arrives in Thebes to avenge the slander, which has been repeated by his mortal relatives, that he is not the son of Zeus. In response, he intends to introduce Dionysian rites into the city, and he intends to demonstrate to the king, Pentheus, and to Thebes that he was indeed born a god.
BACCHAE will be presented on the following schedule:
• Monday, June 26 at 8:00pm at Actors' Temple Theatre 339 (West 47th Street).
• Tuesday, June 27 at 8:00pm at AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street).
• Wednesday, June 28 at 3:00pm at AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street).
• Wednesday, June 28 at 8:00pm at AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street).
• Thursday, June 29 at 8:00 at AMT Theater (354 West 45th Street).
• Friday, June 30 at 8:00 at Marilyn Monroe Theatre (115 East 15th Street).
3) The Democracy Project
The Democracy Project is a journey through the first of the 527 momentous days when New York City was the first capital of the revolutionary United States government. The presidency was new, the slave trade was in debate, and the Constitution — and the rights of all this land's inhabitants — hung in the balance. George Washington struggles to define his presidency; James Madison presents the Bill of Rights; Muscogee (Creek) Chief Alexander McGillivray maneuvers to preserve the nation’s land by signing the first international treaty with the United States; and Ona Judge, a woman enslaved by Martha Washington, sees through the Quaker petitions to end the slave trade. Featuring original songs, The Democracy Project follows a modern-day narrator through the history of Federal Hall on Wall Street, the site of our nation’s first government, and the early days of this country, probing the choices of our Founders and how their actions still reverberate through America, many years after “We the People.”

4) In Corpo
In the last corporation on the planet, everything is great and everybody’s happy! But when an outsider arrives and starts asking questions, the office's fragile equilibrium starts to rupture. Driven by a thrilling original electro-folk-funk score, IN CORPO is a zany, audacious new musical about human connection, the seductions of technology, and what to do when the system lets you down.

5) Just for Us
Expertly crafted by one of comedy’s most distinctive voices, this singular theatrical experience is an exploration of identity and our collective capacity for empathy/ In the wake of a string of anti-Semitic rhetoric pointed in his direction online, standup comic Edelman decides to go straight to the source; specifically, Queens, where he covertly attends a meeting of White Nationalists and comes face-to-face with the people behind the keyboards. What happens next forms the backbone of the shockingly relevant, utterly hilarious, and only moderately perspirant stories that comprise JUST FOR US.
Hudson Theatre (141 W 44 St)
6/22 - 8/19
6) The Light in the Piazza
Tony-winning actress Ruthie Ann Miles (The King & I, City Center’s Sunday in the Park with George) leads the cast as an American mother on vacation in 1950s Florence with her daughter (Anna Zavelson, 13 Reasons Why) confronting painful memories and life-changing opportunities alike. Under the direction of Chay Yew (Cambodian Rock Band) and Guest Music Director Rob Berman (Into the Woods), this staged concert production also includes Shereen Ahmed (My Fair Lady), Andréa Burns (Encores! Dear World), Rodd Cyrus, James D. Gish (Wicked) and Ivan Hernandez (The Good Wife) as the Italian family whose lives are transformed by a chance encounter with a lost hat.
City Center (131 W. 55th St.)

7) Notre Dame De Paris
Telling the timeless story of the disfigured bell ringer Quasimodo and his devotion to the beautiful Esmerelda, Victor Hugo’s 1831 classic and beloved novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame has inspired generations of readers and has been adapted for films, operas, ballets and television shows.
In 1998, Italian singer and composer Richard Cocciante and legendary French songwriter Luc Plamondon adapted Notre Dame de Paris for their unique musical extravaganza, combining elements of musical theatre, dance and acrobatics. The production originally debuted at the Palais des Congrès in Paris in 1998, where it sold more than 1 million tickets and over 3 million albums in its first year, making it the most successful musical production ever, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The production has since toured the world, visiting 24 countries including Canada, the United States, England, Lebanon, Italy, Spain, China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Belgium, Japan, Russia, Luxembourg, Turkey and Poland and sold over 15 million tickets. The score has also produced two hit singles: “Belle,” which has received airplay in 17 countries, and “Vivre,” recorded in English as “Live (for the One I Love),” and became a major hit for Céline Dion.

8) The Rise and Fall of Jean Claude Van Damme
The Rise and Fall of Jean Claude Van Damme is told largely through puppets that beat the crap out of each other. Stylistically inspired by the writing of Kurt Vonnegut, especially Breakfast of Champions, this production is about the life and times of 80’s/90’s action icon Jean Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels, kind of. It can easily be about Steven Segal or Dolf Lundgren or Wesley Snipes or... It’s a redemption tale, or a cautionary tale, or a comedy of manners, or hard-hitting melodrama, and mostly absurd.

9) Triple Threat
Audiences will follow James as he escapes his traumatic adolescence in the South Philly Projects, and through sheer talent and tenacity, becomes a Broadway musical star. They will come along as the entertainer takes them through his unexpected next acts, spiraling from headliner to homeless and finally coming back to himself.

10) A Gaga Guide to the Lower East Side
Throughout the pandemic, Phill has been conducting A GAGA GUIDE TO THE LOWER EAST SIDE, a walking tour of the Lower East Side with an emphasis on the exploits of his favorite pop star and downtown denizen Lady Gaga. For months, highly theatrical Phill has been faithfully guiding inquisitive minds "gaily forward, never straight" past the boyhood home of George and Ira Gershwin, to the sites of former Yiddish theaters and delis, and through Instagrammable graffiti strewn parks, right to the birthplace of Mother Monster. But a Yelp review has set off a chain reaction that threatens to take today’s tour in a totally unexpected direction.

ANNOUNCES
A RELAXED PERFORMANCE OF
CASSIE AND THE LIGHTS
59E59 Theaters (Val Day, Artistic Director; Brian Beirne, Managing Director) announced a Relaxed Performance of Cassie and the Lights, presented by Patch of Blue in association with New Diorama Theatre and Xinyi Shen for Verse Unbound and Amelia Campbell, which will be held on Saturday June 24 at 2:15 PM. Written and directed by Alex Howarth (he/him; Let the Right One In), Cassie and the Lights will began previews on June 13 in Theater B and will run through July 2 as part of 59E59’s Brits Off Broadway 2023 Season.
A Relaxed Performance is an accessible production of a play, musical or other theatrical experience designed to be inclusive and welcoming to individuals with neurodiverse needs as well as friends and family attending with them. Often there are minor technical modifications, resource materials created specifically for this audience, and clinically trained staff members available to assist when needed.
Can kids be parents? Three sisters in foster care wrestle with that question as they try to write the next chapter in their story after important pages are torn out in this new play from Patch of Blue (We Live by the Sea, 2018).
Based on real life events and interviews with children in foster care, the show incorporates live music and video projection to transport audiences between the adult world and the at once more honest and more fantastical world of childhood, where much is mysterious but everything is possible.
Cassie and the Lights is a tender and playful examination of what makes a family and what holds it together.
Tickets to Cassie and the Lights begin at $40 and are on sale now at 59e59.org/shows/show-detail/cassie-and-the-lights/.
