3) 5th Annual Rogue Theater Festival
Rogue Theater Festival is back once again making waves for emerging playwrights. This year on June 6th-18th, they’re presenting over twenty, brand new, one act shows at Theatre Row in New York City and on ShowTix4U. Rogue is staying true to its name by choosing to not only present mostly full length shows, but to also extend its festival an entire week because of the massive amazing new work submissions that flooded its inbox this year. In its five years of supporting emerging artists and presenting their work, Rogue has been able to share over 150 new shows and work with over 500 artists in New York City and around the globe. Uniquely Rogue, some of those shows have taken place entirely virtually with playwrights submitting work from across the country and across the pond to be viewed throughout the entire run of the festival.
The lineup for Rogue this year includes new plays, musicals, staged readings, and an entire second week labeled Rogue Theater Festival: Encores! This second week will feature artists that have worked with Rogue in the past, and end by presenting the play “Senseless” by Wayne L. Firestone, which has been developed over his years of participating in the festival. Rogue Theater Festival and Rogue Theater Festival: Encores! will be running at Theatre Row June 6th-18th, 2023 and will premiere eleven brand new shows. Habit Formed explores how habits are created and broken in our lives. These habits can manifest strength, ease, and freedom, and also create limits, boundaries, and affliction. Repeated group motifs and mounting physical structures (cages, boulders, netting) will embody the ways in which we, as humans, are habit forming creatures. Through Selwyn’s playful, athletic, and sensuous movement vocabulary, the habits will be unpacked. The ultimate journey of the work will tell a story of discernment, unpacking how we can be empowered by our habits and not impaired by them.
The performance will include Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre’s company of 11 dancers, costume and scenic design by Anna-Alisa Belous, lighting design by Dan Ozminkowski, and sound design by Joel Wilhelmi.

Polina Osetinskaya makes a triumphant solo return to the United States, after a critically acclaimed appearance at Carnegie Hall with Maxim Vengerov in October 2022. With her signature virtuosity, Osetinskaya brings to life seminal works by Bach, Handel and Rameau, from epic films such as Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” Anthony Minghella’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon,” and others. The dramatic qualities of the music, which had once enhanced the pivotal moments in these great films, are now distilled by Osetinskaya into a thoughtful and engaging live program.
As a firebrand activist, Osetinskaya’s outspoken opposition of Putin’s regime manifests both on and off the recital stage. Just last month, her Shostakovich recital was raided twice by Moscow police, but Osetinskaya and her fellow musicians and audience members persisted to see the program through. Elsewhere, she has been vocal about her anti-war stance while remaining in Moscow, and has faced cancellation of her concerts in all state and government concert halls.

THE GAAGA will be presented at the abandoned Beat Brew Hall restaurant in Harvard Square, converted into a bomb shelter. The production is co-directed by Igor Golyak who is designing the virtual elements which will stream worldwide June 8-18.
Developed through first-person interviews with refugees and officials, and inspired by world events, THE GAAGA is a darkly funny, haunting and fantastical trip through the consequences of war. Set in a bomb shelter, a Ukrainian girl dreams Vladimir Putin and his cronies into a courtroom and tries them for crimes of war. The playwright and director, Sasha Denisova, a widely celebrated theater maker from Ukraine, fled Moscow in the first days of war and has been living as a refugee in Poland, where she interviewed refugees, officials and studies publicly available materials to create THE GAAGA.

Queer History: Songs of the Waterfront kicks off LGBTQ+ Pride Month at the Seaport Museum! On June 2, at 6:30pm, on the second floor of Pier 17, The Ranzo Boys will explore queer narratives in maritime music. Through a mix of traditional and contemporary chanteys and ballads Lafayette Matthews and Jules Peiperl will sing engaging songs and share stories that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and its underrepresented connections to New York City’s waterfront. The Museum will host a free screening of the film Walk With Me aboard Wavertree on June 7, at 7pm. Knickerbocker Sailing Association’s 21st Annual Floating Parade
On the Water, $15–$50
Cap the Seaport Museum’s Pride Month festivities by getting out on the water on June 24 at 1pm to join the LGBTQ+ sailing club Knickerbocker Sailing Association’s (KSA) 21st annual floating parade. Two of the Museum’s National Register-listed historic ships will join over 30 vessels for the sail, which means you can join part of the parade on the 1885 schooner Pioneer or the 1930 tugboat W.O. Decker. The fleet of 30+ vessels will feature sails designed by Gilbert Baker who created the first pride flag and was a member of KSA. The experienced crews will guide the vessels past New York’s iconic Lower Manhattan skyline and into New York Harbor to join the parade at the Statue of Liberty. Guests aboard Pioneer are invited to BYOB––whether it’s Bring-Your-Own-Brunch, -Beverage, or -Bottle of wine is up to you! Schooner sails make for a unique al fresco experience so feel free to bring along your favorite meal or snack. Advance registration is required, and tickets range from $15–$50. From the Pier, Free
For those who prefer to enjoy the parade from shore, Pier 16 is the perfect viewing location–the procession of vessels is expected to sail past the Seaport Museum between 3-3:30pm. While on the Pier, you are invited to browse and support the Hester Street Fair, which will feature all queer-owned or -operated businesses. NOWHERE, the latest production by acclaimed Chinese American choreographer Yue Yin, exists outside of any identifiable location or discernible moment in time. Evoking a state of uncertainty and a sense of disconnectedness from our tangible reality, the piece challenges us to embrace feelings of uncertainty and to explore new possibilities and new directions. NOWHERE, like the world we live in, exists at the edge of a new frontier. Infused with Yue’s stirring physicality and dynamic movement, NOWHERE takes us across boundaries on a journey of self-discovery and provides a communal transcendent experience. This world premiere production features original and live music by Alexandre Dai Castaing.
