Space Dogs is an extremely lively and energetic musical written and performed by Nick Blaemire and Van Hughes. It covers the history of the space race between the US and Russia focusing particularly on the Russian program of sending dogs into space especially Laika, the first and probably most well-known of the space dogs. It is an extremely fun and entertaining show.
The show is as interactive as it can be in the age of Covid and definitely keeps the audience involved at all times and not only because of its loud rocking score. The songs, on the whole. seem very similar to each other and are hard to differentiate from one another musically. The lyrics, however, are all meaningful in terms of the story. All serve to move the plot along and there aren't really any filler songs.
If you are attending the show with a child or anybody who is especially sensitive to the plight of animals and is unaware of the tragic turn the story of these space dogs takes, it is best to prepare them before attending the show. It is important to note though that not all the dogs that were part of the space program died. However, even the death of one dog would still be a tragedy. Still, even knowing the sad end of this story beforehand, doesn't take away from what an exciting, unique, and original show this is If history classes in school were like this, students would be clamoring to get into them.
