Me - Punk Rock Girl was like nothing I've ever seen before. It's about a girl who feels like an outcast discovering a new punk side of herself. The show is a jukebox musical featuring all songs written by women with the exception of one original song and one song not written by a woman. The acting and singing were amazing! The show itself was very unexpected. It had the most surprising plot twist I have ever seen in a musical. It was written by Joe Iconis, my favorite composer and playwright, who is known for composing the music and lyrics for Be More Chill, my favorite show. I always enjoy seeing one of his shows.
Mom - Be More Chill's, Joe Iconis and The Lightening Thief's Rob Rokicki have teamed up for their latest new musical, Punk Rock Girl. The show is the story of a young girl learning to take chances and finding her place in the world. Although Iconis and Rokicki are primarily known as composers, they did not compose the music for this show except for one original song by Iconis. The score is made up mostly of well-known songs by female composers including Deborah Harry, Avril Lavigne, Gwen Stefani, and more. This only serves to add to the female empowerment vibe of the whole show. Accordingly, while the show can easily be enjoyed by males and females alike, it is an especially good show for young girls because it is full of girls who are not afraid to stand up for themselves and speak their minds, and the main character learns to do so as well. The show does take a bizarre and unexpected turn, but overall, it is still fun, entertaining, and enjoyable.
And that's our view. Tune in Sunday for this week's Sunday Scoop.
