ONGOING EXHIBITIONS
Sharks
Sharks offers visitors a unique look at prehistoric and modern shark species, their habitats and hunting styles, and the conservation threats these magnificent animals are facing today. Fixed in the public imagination as fearsome predators, sharks are more complex than their depiction in popular culture. This new exhibition features fossils, touch-free media, and a spectacular “parade” of sharks with more than 30 lifelike models that range from 33 feet to 5 inches long, including the megalodon, an ancient megapredator known as the "Tyrannosaurus rex of the seas.” Sharks brings visitors face to face with the incredible diversity of this ancient group of fishes and demonstrates that while sharks pose few threats to people, we represent a serious danger to their future on this planet.

BALLAD OF DREAMS, A NOVEL WITH MUSIC
WRITER/COMPOSER ALLYSON HERNANDEZ TO PARTNER WITH MUSIC PRODUCER MACY SCHMIDT
Ballad of Dreams, the debut novel with music written by multihyphenate Allyson Hernandez, will release a companion concept album featuring the music from the novel. Audrey and Rose are cousins and best friends in 1940s New York City whose trajectories, choices, sacrifices, and life experiences are drastically different, but their friendship remains constant. They each journey in discovering their own identities and independence as women in a time where society tried to define that for them. Ballad of Dreams combines the richness of storytelling and flare of musical theater with historical fiction.

what you are now
PREVIEWS BEGIN FEBRUARY 16, 2022
OPENING NIGHT SET FOR FEBRUARY 24, 2022
LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH MARCH 13, 2022
ENSEMBLE STUDIO THEATRE (EST) (William Carden, Artistic Director) and The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation (Doron Weber, Vice-President and Program Director) are pleased to announce the World Premiere of what you are now by Sam Chanse (Fruiting Bodies), directed by Steve Cosson (Whisper House), co-presented by The Civilians (Steve Cosson, Artistic Director). Pia is a passionate young researcher investigating cutting-edge new ideas about how to heal the mind from traumatic memories. But her interest is also personal, deeply intertwined with her family’s history. When a figure from the past unexpectedly shows up, urging Pia’s mother to testify about her experiences during the violence of 1970s Cambodia, unresolved histories are brought to the surface. Pia must navigate through a latticework of interconnected memories: her relationship, her brother Darany and, centrally, her mother Chantrea—making discoveries that will radically alter everyone’s lives in the present.
what you are now asks what if our memories aren’t fixed, but change each time we recall the past? This world premiere by Sam Chanse is a thrillingly insightful new play that asks the audience to move through the shifting dance between the past and present, and to consider how with new understanding we might change “who you were then” to “what you are now.”
Ticket information for what you are now will be announced in January. For more information, visit ESTnyc.org. *********************************************************************

New York, New York) The Obie Award-winning HERE (Founding Artistic Director Kristin Marting) announced today that The Hang, featuring book and lyrics by Taylor Mac, music by Matt Ray and direction by Niegel Smith, has added three performances to its run due to popular demand. The Hang is a ritual celebration of queerness, questions, and the eternity of a moment. What transpires is a centuries-long communal consideration, full of jazz, dance, debates, and queer romps. Through this foray into the calamities of our past intelligentsia, Taylor Mac, Matt Ray and their collaborators invite the audience to their party and create a performance, which advocates for a more inclusive and joyous world.

14) Liza Gennaro’s New Book
Making Broadway Dance
Now Available for Purchase
Now available for sale, Broadway choreographer Liza Gennaro’s Making Broadway Dance landed the #1 position on two of Amazon’s key book charts – Dance Hot Releases and Music Hot Releases – in December. Through in-depth analysis of musical theatre choreography and choreographers, the book challenges long-held perceptions of Broadway dance as a kitsch and disposable dance form created without artistic process and demonstrates that the art form is not a monolith but is rather multifaceted in terms of dance styles, aesthetics and methodologies. Making Broadway Dance is available for purchase on Amazon or through Oxford University Press.
Aimed at students, academics, and anyone who loves musical theatre and dance, Making Broadway Dance by Manhattan School of Music Associate Dean and Director of Musical Theatre Liza Gennaro gives valuable insights into how Broadway dance is made. Gennaro examines choreography for musical theatre through the lens of dance studies, script analysis, movement research, and dramaturgical inquiry, and in doing so gives a close-up look at a dance form that has been analyzed only superficially until now.
Making Broadway Dance examines the choreographic systems of some of Broadway’s most influential dance-makers, including George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins, Katherine Dunham, Bob Fosse, Savion Glover, Sergio Trujillo, Steven Hoggett, and Camille A. Brown.

Stravinsky: Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments and Picasso’s Man with a Guitar
Upon settling in Paris in the 1920s, Igor Stravinsky formed close friendships with artists like Pablo Picasso, a founder of Cubism, which sought to deconstruct the familiar and reassemble reality through a disciplined, formal approach. The movement inspired Stravinsky to develop a new approach to the construction of musical forms. He loved to perform his Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments, one of his earliest “neo-classic” masterpieces.
Tickets priced at $30–$50, include same-day museum admission and may be purchased online here, by calling The Met at 212.570.3949, or at any desk in The Great Hall at The Met Fifth Avenue. 20) Just Kidding:
Sonia De Los Santos
Live From Symphony Space on February 19
Saturday, February 19 at 11 am EST: Sonia De Los Santos
Travel to Mexico and beyond with Latin GRAMMY nominee Sonia De Los Santos and her band in this bilingual concert of songs about hope, home, and gratitude. Sonia De Los Santos was born with a smile on her face (that's what her mom says) in Monterrey, Mexico, and in 2007 started touring the world, singing in English and Spanish, playing guitar and jarana and lighting up the stage with Dan Zanes and Friends. Sonia’s third album Esperanza is a bilingual collection of songs that explore hope: looking back at our own journey, cherishing our cities and homes, being grateful to one another, dreaming of a better future, marveling at nature, and finding light within ourselves. De Los Santos will perform her new song "All I Need Is Your Smile" for the first time ever at the show.

FOR NYC SCHOOL COMMUNITIES
IN TRADITIONALLY UNDER-RESOURCED POPULATIONS
IN A BROAD EFFORT
TO MAKE BROADWAY MORE ACCESSIBLE
AND FOSTER LOVE FOR THE ARTS
Producers Barry Diller, David Geffen, and Kate Horton announced today that the smash hit Broadway musical The Music Man is making available 10,000 tickets at just $20 each to New York City students, their families, and their teachers to help foster a love and appreciation for the arts by making Broadway more accessible. This broad effort, created and spearheaded by The Music Man’s Black Theatre Coalition fellow, Amy Marie Haven, is built around partnerships with the New York City Department of Education and a dozen local youth non-profits, including Artists Striving to End Poverty, Art Start, Arts For All, Arthur Miller Foundation, On Broadway Performing Arts Training Program, Young People's Chorus of NYC, Education Through Music, Rosie's Theatre Kids, R Evolucion Latina, and Broadway Bridges.
The extensive effort will be accompanied by curated initiatives designed to engage with the community.
This broad effort is comprised of four separate initiatives:
Through Teachers Night Out, The Music Man is inviting teachers from the five boroughs to attend for $20 on various Tuesdays throughout the run of the production.
Family Shows will help students from traditionally under-resourced communities to bring their families to The Music Man, with sets of four tickets being offered to each participating student. Each Wednesday night will be earmarked as a Family Show, accommodating ten families per week.
Approximately 3,500 tickets will be allotted annually for a Classroom Ticket initiative, offering tickets to schools and education non-profits as part of a larger, integrated curriculum.
Finally, on two Wednesdays in September, The Music Man will mark “back-to-school” month with Student Matinees, accommodating 600 students at each. A Cast Talk Back will take place immediately following the performances.
