Tips for Tuesday - Book: Senior Year, Movie: Red, and Misc.: BenQ Screenbar Plus LED Computer Monitor Lamp

Book: Senior Year by Lily Caverton

Mom - Today I am recommending Senior Year by Lily Caverton. Lily was a quiet studious girl who was more likely to be found at home studying than out partying. Then, in her senior year of high school, she met Kelly Grange. Kelly was a grown up with a husband and three kids. Kelly took Lily under her wing, and she practically became a member of their family. She encouraged Lily to drink and smoke and loosen up, and before she knew it Lily was drinking and partying all the time, and her grades were slipping. That was okay though because she was happy, she had a lot of friends, and most of all she had Kelly. Even though Kelly was so much older she was like a sister to Lily or so Kelly convinced her. However, Kelly's motives for befriending Lily were not as as atrustic as she led Kelly to believe. Before she knew it Lily's whole life was spiraling out of control, and she didn't know how to stop it. This autobiographical novel is a cautionary tale that should be read by all highschoolers. It shows what can happen if you let things get out of control and you trust the wrong people. Reading the book is like watching a train heading off the tracks, you know things are going to go bad, but you just can't stop watching/reading. It's a real page turner.

Movie: Michael Grandage's Production of John Logan's Red

Mom - Today I am recommending Michael Grandage's production of John Logan's Red.  Red is a play about the artist Mark Rothko and his fictional assistant, Ken. Although this two character one set show can seem bit claustrophobic at times, the acting is terrific. Alfred Molina who plays the somewhat pompous and verbose Rothko, recreates his role from the original Broadway production for which he was nominated for a Tony Award. Eddie Redmayne who played Ken on Broadway actually received a Tony for his performance. The role is played here by Alfred Enoch best known for playing Dean in the Harry Potter movies and Wes Gibbins in the TV show How to Get Away Murder. He is more than up to the task, He does a nice job of portraying the aspiring artist hoping to be taken under his bosses aegis and yet unafraid to voice his own opinions. The show was filmed in its production at the Wyndam's Theatre in London and will be shown in theaters in London and North America for one day only on November 7, 2018.
