With music and lyrics from Micki Grant, Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope (1971) is a celebration of African-American culture and community. Originally conceived and directed by the first African-American woman to direct on Broadway, Vinnette Carroll, this radical work presents the issues of race politics in America and raises voices for change through a lively mix of song and dance with a score that includes gospel, jazz, soul, calypso, and rock.

Tony Award-winner Savion Glover (Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk) directs and choreographs the Off-Center revival, mixing his own artistic flair with Ms. Grant's score. Don't Bother Me is a homecoming of sorts for Glover—his mother and aunts toured with the show in the '70s. From his childhood to today's Off-Center audience, Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope is as relevant as ever.

REBEL PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS REBELS ON THE ROOFTOP, ANNUAL FUNDRAISER PARTY

Nonprofit educational theater for young audiences, Rebel Playhouse, is pleased to present their annual fundraiser party, REBELS ON THE ROOFTOP. The event will be hosted at the 14th Street Y Rooftop Terrace in the East Village (344 E. 14th St.) on July 26, 6:30-9:30pm. NINAGAWA Macbeth

Created in 1980, Yukio Ninagawa’s exquisitely striking “cherry blossom”Macbeth is a landmark among global theater productions. The painterly director, who died in 2016, transposed Shakespeare’s Scottish play to feudal Japan, where the title character is an honor-bound samurai, kabuki witches cast spells, and Buddhist chants alternate with works by Samuel Barber and Schubert. This revival of the original production, the last one overseen by Ninagawa before his death, stars Japanese actors Masachika Ichimura as Macbeth and Yuko Tanaka as Lady Macbeth. Lincoln Center will present the final staging of this beloved production before it is retired from the Ninagawa Company’s repertoire.

RZA: Live from The 36th Chamber of Shaolin

Wu-Tang Clan founder, composer, and filmmaker RZA kicks off the season with an epic audiovisual film experience—a re-score of the Shaw Brothers’ 1978 martial arts classic The 36^th Chamber of Shaolin. With its themes of perseverance, transcendence, and brotherhood, the film was a formative influence on Wu-Tang’s aesthetic. Now, weaving together instrumentals and beats from the Wu-Tang discography (and beyond), RZA performs his thrilling new score live, amplifying the film’s powerful narrative and astonishing action from opening sequence to closing credit. After touring this project to sold-out venues in 12 cities, RZA returns to New York City with a special edition crafted specially for his hometown fans.

The cross-Atlantic exchange of ideas between France and the U.S. serves as a theme for this program. Louis Langrée leads two American takes on Gallic culture with Bernstein’s Voltaire-inspired Overture to Candide and a new critical edition of Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Meanwhile, Mozart’s Adagio and Rondo in C minor makes great use of the glass harmonica, which was invented by Benjamin Franklin, the first United States ambassador to France, and will be played by Friedrich Heinrich Kern and Philipp Marguerre. Emanuel Ax, a frequent guest at the festival, performs Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 17, which, coincidently, was Bernstein’s favorite “party” piece.

Legendary music producer Hal Willner brings together an eclectic array of musicians for an imaginative musical tribute to Italian composer Nino Rota, known for his iconic scores to Federico Fellini’s films including La Dolce Vita, 8½, and Juliet of the Spirits. The night opens with music from two other famous Rota scores—the first two Godfather movies—before digging into the Fellini scores in a live performance of the seminal 1981 tribute album that launched Willner’s storied career, Amarcord Nino Rota (I Remember Nino Rota).

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

The Drama League (Gabriel Stelian-Shanks, Executive Artistic Director) opened its applications to the public for the 2019 Director Residency Programs, which support theatre directors with resources to build and develop new plays, musicals, performance pieces, hybrid works, and devised theatre projects during the 2019 calendar year.  The deadline for completed applications is Noon (12pm) US EDT on Friday, September 7, 2018. 

Applications are now available at www.dramaleague.org for four residency programs:

• The First Stage Residencies, offering directors at the early conceptual stages of a new project space and time for thoughtful investigation;

• The Next Stage Residencies, which support multiple creative processes and projects of a theater director over the course of the year;

• The Impact Residency, for directors who are part of an existing ensemble company, or working inside an existing ensemble company, to create a new work; and

• The Beatrice Terry Residency for Women Writer/Directors, a project-based residency for women and women-identified artists who write and direct their own stage projects.
