I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

A Brooklyn Boy Extends Through April 28
East Village Playhouse
340 East 6th St.
New York, NY

After unprecedented demand, A Brooklyn Boy, a one man show co-written and performed by Steven Prescod and co-written and directed by Moises Roberto Belizario, will extend performances through April 28, 2018 at the East Village Playhouse (340 East 6th Street).

A Brooklyn Boy is a riveting spoken-word performance that portrays Steven Prescod's coming-of-age story, taking audiences on a journey from adversity to personal triumph.  Born in Brooklyn’s Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood to a Grenadian mother and a Guyanese father, Steven was only one year old when his father was incarcerated. Steven grew up in a house surrounded by a variety of relatives who all had an impact on his life, many of whom are among the 32 characters he plays throughout the show.

As an impressionable teenager, despite his efforts to break free from his neighborhood’s unyielding grip, Steven was constantly pulled back, ultimately leading to his arrest. While facing a seven-year jail sentence, Steven could have become another statistic or headline. Instead, he took a second chance at life.

Performances for A Brooklyn Boy run Thursdays and Fridays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $40 and available through OvationTix.com

2 PLAYS. 3 LANGUAGES.
NEW YIDDISH REP’S UNPRECENDENTED
REPERTORY ENGAGEMENT OF
HANOCH LEVIN X 3
TO BEGIN OFF-BROADWAY PERFORMANCES
MARCH 12
AT THEATER AT 224 WAVERLY

New Yiddish Rep will present a historic repertory engagement of two plays by Israel’s leading playwright, Hanoch Levin. THE LABOR OF LIFE will be presented in both Yiddish (featuring Ronit Asheri, Israeli film star Gera Sandler and Eli Rosen) and English (with Amy Coleman, Eli Rosen and Yossi Sokolsky). THE WHORE FROM OHIOwill be presented in Hebrew (with internationally acclaimed storyteller Vered Hankin, David Mandelbaum and Eli Rosen) and Yiddish (with French journalist Mary Black, David Mandelbaum and Eli Rosen). The foreign language productions, including two Yiddish world premieres with new translations by Eli Rosen, will be performed with English supertitles. The 36-performance run is set to begin March 14th through March 29th at Theater at 224 Waverly (224 Waverly Place, just west of Seventh Ave. between 11th & Perry St.)

Hanoch Levin (1943 – 1999) was Israel's most esteemed playwright. Prolific and controversial, his dark comedies of great psychological insight and poetry have both shocked and entranced his audiences. His 56 plays are as universal as they are Israeli. THE LABOR OF LIFE begins with the hero getting his sleeping wife out of bed in the middle of the night to announce that he’s leaving her after 30 years of marriage. The heartlessness of his desertion is evident even in the words with which he tries to comfort her: “Maybe you’ll meet a widower, a real estate dealer from Los Angeles, and have a good laugh on me in America.” This 1989 play has proven to be one of Levin’s most enduring classics. THE WHORE FROM OHIO has been called poetic, devastating, vulgar, and stylish. Hoibitter, an old tramp, has dreamed all his life about an unattainable high-class prostitute in America. As his 70th birthday approaches, he seeks to give himself a birthday present that suits his pocket: a visit to a street whore.

PIGEONHOLED
Offers Children's After School Acting Classes Spring Session

Pigeonholed, a nonprofit New York City-based theater company, announces the Spring 2018 Children's Class Schedule, with classes in improvisation and story building, and scene study and acting technique.  Classes will be held at Chaos Studios at 247 Water Street, Suite 202 in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Pigeonholed's belief is that children learn and grow from doing. These classes were created from Pigeonholed founders, Justin Cimino and Sasha Lazare's own professional experience as actors as well as their extensive experience as educators. They believe that combination is essential in creating an environment where students are challenged to mature as independent thinkers and to trust their individual creative instincts. Equally critical to their curriculum, over the course of the program students will also participate in a highly diverse set of group activities, which will be aimed at fostering a spirit of teamwork amongst all the participants. By the end of the program students can be both more self-assured and comfortable in front of a crowd, more intuitive and empathetic as artists, and will better understand how to channel their own creative impulses into productive work that the world needs to see. For more information visit https://www.pigeonholedtheater.org/classes-for-kids.

Creating Your Own Character
Thursdays from 4-5pm
This age range encompasses children at their most spectacularly imaginative. In this class, we encourage the students to use that imagination to create a world and character(s) all of their own. They will learn theatre games, improvisation, listening and communication skills, as well as how to devise an original play. Throughout the session, they will develop and build upon a fully formed character and story, which will culminate in an invited rehearsal where they will present their original, short play.

Acting Technique and Scene Study
Thursdays from 5-6pm
This class focuses both on improvisation and scene study with a focus on various acting techniques. At this age, students are able to develop a physical and emotional connection to characters and scenarios presented to them. The first half of the session will focus on theatre games, improvisation, clowning, and devising their own work, with the second half focusing on close scene study. By the end of the session the students will have created and written their own work as well as memorized and staged scenes from classic plays assigned by the instructors. Performance techniques taught will include Meisner, movement, and voice/speech, which will all be incorporated into their final presentation. Parents will be welcome to attend an invited rehearsal on the last day of classes.

Spring session starts Thursday, April 12 and runs until June 14. Registration ends April 11.

March 8 - 10, 2018 at 7:30pm

Baruch Performing Arts Center presents Heidi Latsky Dancein the New York City Premier.

e of D.I.S.P.L.A.Y.E.D. at Baruch Performing Arts Center, 55 Lexington Avenue (25th Street between Third and Lexington Avenues), NYC on March 8, 9, and 10, 2018 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $21 ($10 for for Students with Student ID) and may be purchased at www.baruch.cuny.edu/bpac.
Heidi Latsky transforms her performance installation ON DISPLAY, seen in 40 cities across the globe, to create a new theatrical experience - part dance, part art exhibition. D.I.S.P.L.A.Y.E.D. explores society's obsession with body image, challenges boundaries defining beauty, embodies inclusion through dance, and explores the concept of watching while being watched.

Part gallery of living sculpture, part immersive dance experience, in D.I.S.P.L.A.Y.E.D., Heidi Latsky Dance will experiment with multimedia aspects to enhance an audience's perception of inclusion; the performers themselves represent a wise cross-section of the diversity spectrum. A movement installation devised to disrupt public spaces with a meditative sculpture court of real people now reenters a more traditional venue in D.I.S.P.L.A.Y.E.D.

The evening will include installations throughout the space, transforming the entire venue including all lobby areas. Fellow Canadian Aerialist and double-amputee Erin Ball will be featured in a 30-minute solo, Suspended Disbelief, during which she will perform in and around her wheelchair that is being suspended by the silks. Films by Janet Wong, Associate Artistic Director of New York Live Arts and Paul Galando (HLD's media director) will be screened. Guest appearances by members of the West Coast-based AXIS Dance Company and members of the Baruch College community.

Through a partnership with the NuVu Studio in Massachusetts, middle and high school students have created wearable art pieces designed specifically for designated performers highlighting the importance of body diversity. Fashion designers Anna Kathleen Little, Susan Obrant, and Timothy Westbrook also contribute to the clothing worn by the artists.

Limited Engagement through April 22, 2018
Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre
in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre

Lindsey Ferrentino made her New York debut with her critically acclaimed play, Ugly Lies the Bone, starring Mamie Gummer in 2015 at Roundabout Underground, and returns to the Steinberg Center with her Roundabout commission, Amy and the Orphans. As part of Roundabout’s commitment to foster the talent of emerging writers, each Underground playwright is commissioned to write a new play before their Underground play is produced.

Amy and the Orphans opens officially on March 1, 2018 at the Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre (111 West 46th Street). This will be a limited engagement through April 22, 2018.

After their father’s death, two unhinged siblings reunite with Amy, their movie-loving sister who has Down syndrome (Jamie Brewer, "American Horror Story"). Together, they careen down the Great American Long Island Expressway, navigating strip malls, traffic jams and some serious (and not-so-serious) family drama. An unexpected turn reveals the moment that changed their lives…and the fact that Amy may be the only one who knows her own mind.

Roundabout will present two Relaxed Performances of Amy and the Orphans on Wednesday, April 11 at 2pm and Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30pm.These performances are less formal and more supportive of sensory, communication, movement and learning needs. To learn more, visit Relaxed Performances.
