Recently, we have seen a rash of somewhat frightening prescient shows dealing with AI. Disruption takes this idea another chilling step forward. It imagines a world where a new algorithm can make people's decisions, and one man unethically tests it on his friends without their knowledge, with tragic consequences.
This show is absolutely riveting. It's shocking, heartbreaking, and downright terrifying both emotionally and intellectually. As if the prospect of what AI can do weren't scary enough, now there's this. Still, besides the sharp, clever writing by playwright Andrew Stein, the show is full of striking performances. On the evening we attended, the latter included outstanding understudies. Octavia Chavez-Richmond, who brilliantly stood in for TV star Shaunette Renee Wilson, and the always excellent Lauren Marcus, in for Elizabeth Stanley.
