I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) Art

Taste. Money. Ego. And other fine arts. This sleek, sophisticated comedy is about, well, art. Come see what all the debate is about – don’t miss ART on Broadway for a strictly limited engagement this fall.

Featuring original music created by Kid Harpoon,  one of the most prominent songwriters and producers in the pop music space, winning his first Grammy Award for his work on Harry’s House by Harry Styles in 2023, the same year he produced Miley Cyrus’ hit record “Flowers,” which took home the coveted ‘Record of the Year’ trophy. He is known for collaborating with a multitude of notable artists spanning all genres such as Lizzo, Florence + the Machine, Inhaler, King of Leon, Jessie Ware, David Byrne and more.

2) Saturday Church

Saturday Church tells the story of Ulysses—New York City kid, devoted son and the fiercest tenor at his aunt’s church. A chance encounter on the subway introduces him to the world of Saturday Church, a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth. Caught between two worlds, Ulysses wrestles with family and faith as he strives to find the place where he can love and be loved—in all his fabulousness. This new musical captures the joy of embodied liberation and the profound power of faith, with a score that soars from the transcendence of gospel to the exhilarating vibrations of house music and pop. Saturday Church boldly asks, “is faith only for the Holy?” and, more importantly, “are there any queens in the house?!!!!”

New York Theatre Workshop (79 E. 4th St.)

3) Sober Songs

SOBER SONGS is a darkly comedic musical that follows six young adults in recovery at a local AA meeting founded by the gruff but loving “Cap.” Blending biting humor, emotional ballads, and sharp dialogue, the show evolves from light and charming to deeply emotional, offering a raw, character-driven, and emotionally authentic look at addiction, love, identity, and the complicated, messy road to sobriety. With heart, heartbreak, and cathartic honesty, Sober Songs offers a deeply human—and at times hilarious—glimpse into recovery culture.

Turn Everywhere: Deborah Hay on film/in person

Saturday, September 13 at 7pm

Studio Complex (indoors)

$25 General Admission | $15 Students with ID

“I cannot think of anything else in my life where there is so much unlearning and learning happening at the same time.”—Deborah Hay about dance

An evening of insightful and meditative documentaries on the interminable, inimitable, experimental choreographer Deborah Hay, her artistic relationships, and her creative process. Films by Peter Humble and David Young (Alignment is everywhere), and Becky Edmunds

(Turn Your F^*king Head). Discussion with Hay to follow.

Alignment is everywhere was shot on a 16mm hand-cranked camera using expired and hand-processed film stock, and marks Hay’s return after the loss of theater innovator and dear friend, Margaret Cameron. Filmed in 2019 at Indented Head, near Melbourne, Australia, the short work is a gentle contemplation of how one “serves a tree” through death.

Turn Your F^*king Head documents the final edition of Hay’s iconic Solo Performance Commissioning Project, in which participating artists from around the world receive Hay’s most recent solo choreography. Filmed in 2012 at Findhorn community, Scotland, the poetics and puzzles of Hay’s instructions are visually combined with the landscape of the historic ecovillage.

Ayodele Casel

Freedom… In Progress and new work

Friday, September 19 at 7pm, post-show artist talk led by Kayla Farrish

Saturday, September 20 at 4pm

Studio Complex (indoors)

In partnership with Works & Process

$25 General Admission | $15 Students with ID

$40 for both Ayodele Casel + Kayla Farrish

Building from last year’s critically acclaimed phenomenon Freedom… In Progress, tapper Ayodele Casel once again creates a new work by ambitiously joining jazz legends Max Roach and Cecil Taylor—from their uncompromising 1979 improvised recording—with rhythmic love, control, sensitivity, and liberation.

Casel is sought after as a “tap dancer and choreographer of extraordinary depth,” and a “force of wit and wonder” (New York Times). Known for her highly skilled and expansive improvisation, Casel’s projects include her concert and Bessie Award-winning film Chasing Magic, and her Drama Desk-nominated work as tap choreographer for the Broadway revival of Funny Girl.

This project is made possible, in part, through funding from the County of Dutchess and Destination Dutchess (formerly Dutchess Tourism, Inc.) and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.

Kayla Farrish

DOCILE and A Beast

Saturday, September 20 at 7pm, post-show artist talk led by Ayodele Casel

Sunday, September 21 at 2pm

Studio Complex (indoors)

$25 General Admission | $15 Students with ID

$40 for both Ayodele Casel + Kayla Farrish

Two brand-new works from the insatiable dancemaker Kayla Farrish (2024 Annual Festival, Limón Dance Company commissioned choreographer) that draw on Black histories, jazz’s reimagination, and magical realism.

DOCILE is a study on untaming, a play on light and darkness, inspired by James Baldwin’s seminal questioning Notes of a Native Son as he bridged the decision of finding freedom outside of America’s borders or returning home in the 1960s to commit himself to resistance movements. Turning towards and colliding with a vibration of freedom, this work witnesses a Black woman in a discovery of truth and a journey of release, asking “What transformation and wildness is possible in reclamation and seeing our full humanity?”

A Beast is an intimate and eruptive conversation between two people as they make sense of one another. They hold one another and listen, opening up to greater depth and feeling. Their words and songs spill into flight and physical risk. They uncover their personal power within, unraveling and finding themselves through the confrontation.

Remaining selections, curated by filmmaker and ICS executive director, Caryn Cline, specifically for Lori Goldston, are drawn from ICS’ Engauge Film Festival’s recent archives and evoke landscapes near and far, internal and surrounding. In early 2025, Goldston traveled through Europe with this special collaboration, performing in London, Bristol, Bologna, Rome, Milan, Brussels, and Bremen before coming to Tivoli to share with Kaatsbaan audiences.

Deborah Hay’s Performance Club

Friday, September 12 at 1pm

Saturday, September 13 at 1pm

Studio Complex (indoors)

Free

“How I may see our universe, acknowledging its infinitude as I dance, is my survival.”

— Deborah Hay

Performance Club is modeled on library etiquette. It is conceived as a timed research experiment for artists and individual audience members. At Kaatsbaan, Deborah Hay has 15 minutes to experience a work-in-progress in the presence of the audience. As an audience member, you have 45 minutes to process any reciprocal responses to the live event you just experienced. It may be writing, drawing, dancing, sleeping, meditating, etc. No one imposes their research onto anyone else. Performance Club is an opportunity to have space and time to notice how performer and audience are both influenced/inspired by one another, a rarely acknowledged outcome of live performance. Outstanding is the absence of verbal exchange of any kind during the one hour. Afterwards, yes.

PERFORMANCE LENDING LIBRARY

Two audio-guided physical experiences adapted for Kaatsbaan’s campus, each under 30 minutes. Bring a blanket, your smart phone/tablet (data streaming required) and earbuds/headphones, and be led into a range of embodied performance practices with your imagination as the site of the artwork.

While created as a solo practice, you can synchronize doing it with friends as a group or simply go off on a solitary journey. Set up a spot anywhere on the Kaatsbaan campus, alongside a visual art sculpture or a tree, blend into the landscape at the edge of the forest or out in the middle of an open field, and begin at your own pace.

At Kaatsbaan, you can find the Lending Library QR codes inside the Studio Complex lobby and at Concessions. Individuals and groups can contact 845-757-5106 x117 or boxoffice@kaatsbaan.org for more information and support. When onsite for the festival, Box Office staff can offer suggestions for places to anchor your trip and answer any questions you may have.

Los Pasitos: Early Dance, Big Discovery

September 15, 2025 to May 22, 2026

Early Childhood Dance (Ages 2-5)

Every child’s first movement matters. At Ballet Hispánico’s Los Pasitos program, children ages 2–5 discover the joy of dance in a warm, welcoming space that celebrates culture, builds coordination, and sparks imagination. Our toddler-to-kindergarten classes blend music, storytelling, and age-appropriate technique—all guided by expert teachers who nurture creativity and curiosity every step of the way.

  • Pasitos Age 2

Your child will discover the joy of dance alongside an adult. Through the use of cultural imagery, songs, and games, this class fosters each student’s coordination, control, and musicality in partnership with their parent or caregiver. As students gain confidence and independence with the material, the teacher will encourage the students to do more of the class independently.

*Please note: ONE adult is required to attend each class with their 2 year old and is expected to participate alongside them as instructed by the teacher. No additional adults or children will be allowed in the studios, this includes siblings of any age.

  • Pasitos Ages 3 & 4

Your child will explore shapes and develop basic locomotor movements, while learning dance etiquette and foundational technique. Each class enhances coordination, musicality, and movement dynamics with an emphasis on creative expression and building confidence.

  • Hablando y Bailando Ages 4 & 5

This creative movement dance class flows naturally between English and Spanish instruction, and is a great opportunity to strengthen your child's technique and their knowledge of both languages. Children will continue developing coordination, musicality, and movement dynamics through this rich, artistic, and cultural experience. No prior Spanish language knowledge is required. This class creates a strong foundation for our Encuentros Ages 6 & 7 classes.

  • Pasitos Rhythms Ages 4 & 5

Children are introduced to a world of rhythms as they learn the fundamentals of tap, flamenco, and folklorico, strengthening musicality and coordination. This fun and challenging class immerses your child in the history and culture of the dance forms through their dynamic rhythms.

  • Pasitos Pre-Ballet Age 5

Creativity and technique are fused into one fun class that refines musicality, flexibility, and control. Your child will study foundational ballet concepts through classic stories and cultural music, while continuing to hone their creative expression.

Registration is available here.

Open Class Program (Ages 6-18)

Whether your child is trying dance for the first time or training with ambition, Encuentros offers a place to thrive. With flexible scheduling and expert instruction, students can choose just one class—or build a full week of movement, rhythm, and growth.

Through complex rhythms, vivid stories, and rich history, students develop dance fundamentals while exploring the artistry of Afro Caribbean traditions. Drawing from modern, contemporary, and Afrocentric dance practices, this class develops core dance principles such as balance and coordination while introducing students to intricate rhythms and vibrant expressivity. Afro Caribbean prepares students for ongoing studies in a wide range of dance forms including modern, contemporary, and African based styles.

  • Ballet

The ballet program encourages students to enjoy the challenges and practices of learning ballet technique. Students work with experienced teachers that focus on ballet fundamentals emphasizing placement, execution, precision, clarity of line, dynamic movement, musicality, and freedom of artistic expression. Students will feel a sense of accomplishment through the discipline and mastery of technical skills, while enjoying moving to music, all in an inclusive and nurturing environment.

  • Pre-Pointe/Pointe

Pre-Pointe/Pointe is for the beginner pointe dancer. This class will focus on strengthening the muscles of the legs, feet, ankles, and core in order to support pointe work. When the dancer is ready, they will start working on pointe, facing the barre. Students must have a solid foundation in ballet technique (intermediate level proficiency) and approval from the Program Advisor to register. Students aspiring to go on pointe are highly encouraged to take this class in addition to their ballet class(es) with flat shoes for pre-pointe training.

  • Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance centers self-expression, creative freedom, and the conveyance of emotion through movement. Literally meaning “dance of today,” this is a genre grounded in expression and experimentation. Students draw from ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop to create movement that’s personal, physical, and full of feeling. Great for building strength, confidence, and creativity.

  • Flamenco

A Ballet Hispánico legacy since 1970. Students learn flamenco technique, history, and musical structure through powerful footwork, rhythmic clapping, and expressive upper body movement—all within a cultural framework.

  • Hip-Hop

Explore the culture, history, and evolution of hip-hop. Students learn various styles, including locking, popping, house, breaking, and freestyle; building their strength, skill, and technique. Classes pay homage to the hip-hop pioneers, creating a safe learning space and a sense of community for students to engage in this social dance form.

  • Jazz

The fundamentals of jazz technique build strong body alignment, increased flexibility, and muscle awareness through its form and style. Students develop musicality and retention skills as they perform combinations and learn the artistry of various jazz repertoire. Stretch and conditioning is an important element of the class structure, along with the exploration of historical jazz roots.

  • Latin Rhythms & Salsa

Designed to teach students the history, culture, and social etiquette of Latin dances, these classes sharpen skills in musicality, dance terminology, footwork, body actions, arm styling, floor craft, and partnering. Classes increase in complexity throughout the year, with ¡mucho sabor!

Classes focus on developing core dance concepts, such as strength, balance, and coordination, while exploring diverse movement principles such as opposition, spiraling, fall & recovery. The curriculum includes work on spinal articulation, floorwork, movement dynamics, use of weight, and complex rhythms.

  • Tap

Students will learn tap fundamentals as they develop footwork precision, movement coordination, balance & weight shifts, and rhythmic accuracy. Emphasis is placed on developing the students’ artistry and improvisational skills alongside the history of the artform.

12) VIRTUAL STAGE LAB LAUNCHES

Bringing New Musicals & Plays to the Screen for Free

The revolutionary new company at the intersection of film and theatreVirtual Stage Lab (VSL), is officially launching this summer after two years of building theatrical new media content behind the scenes. A Tony-Nominated composer, a Broadway lyricist, and a National Touring performer walk into a lab and out comes an industry disruptor. VSL captures brand-new musicals and plays on film—beautifully staged, professionally shot, and streaming anytime, anywhere, for free. That’s right: free.

Founded by Tony nominee Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre), Broadway bookwriter David Goldsmith (Motown The Musical), and digital-savvy performer-producer Melody Munitz (The Addams Family National Tour), Virtual Stage Lab is on a mission to democratize the creation and presentation of new theatrical works, upending the costly, exclusive development process that has long kept new voices waiting in the wings.

Each VSL project is a proof of concept, both for the new show itself and for the model overall: that theatrical work can be born on camera, live online forever, and catalyze future live productions. VSL offers a radical new blueprint for creating, presenting, and sharing new theatre in the 21st century.

13) Bucks County Playhouse Invites Community to
“Write a Love Letter to Bucks County”

Initiative celebrates the current production
of She Loves Me running through September 14

In celebration of Bucks County Playhouse’s production of the classic Broadway romantic comedy “She Loves Me”, running now through Sept. 14, the Playhouse and the Bucks County Herald are inviting community members to share their affection for the region in a special “Love Letter to Bucks County” initiative.

Inspired by “She Loves Me” — the charming musical that was the basis for the blockbuster film You’ve Got Mail — the campaign encourages participants to express what they love most about Bucks County. In the show, two feuding clerks exchange a series of anonymous love letters without realizing they are writing to each other. In this local twist, the Playhouse is asking the community to skip the anonymity and write heartfelt tributes to the people, places and experiences that make Bucks County so special.

“Bucks County is filled with beauty, culture and history,” says Nicole Hackmann, Bucks County Playhouse Executive Director. “This project is a chance for residents and visitors to share their personal connections to our region and celebrate what makes it truly unique.”

Participants are invited to write about anything they cherish in Bucks County — from iconic landmarks like Bucks County Playhouse, the Michener Museum and Fonthill Castle to favorite restaurants, parks, trails and hidden gems. Selected letters will be featured online, on social media and compiled into a special “Love Letter to Bucks County” collection.

As a bonus, everyone who submits a letter will be entered into a drawing to win a Bucks County Playhouse Package for Two, including tickets to a future Playhouse production, dinner at The Deck and more. The drawing will be held on the closing night of “She Loves Me,” Sunday, September 14.

To submit your love letter, visit buckscountyplayhouse.org/she-loves-me.

14) A FAMILY FOR ZOYA: THE TRUE STORY OF AN ENDANGERED CUB TURNS THE TALE OF THE ZOO'S LIFE SAVING EFFORTS INTO A CHILDREN'S BOOK

Proceeds from the Book Support Wildlife Conservation

for Tigers Around the World

Philadelphia Zoo is celebrating the release of the new, nonfiction children’s book “A Family For Zoya: The True Story of an Endangered Cub,” which tells the tale of an Amur tiger given a second chance at life thanks to the experts at Philadelphia Zoo, Oklahoma City Zoo, and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The book captures the inspiring, true story of how a days-old tiger cub, the lone survivor of her litter and rejected by her mother, was cared for by Philadelphia Zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams before being driven across the country to Oklahoma City Zoo to see if she could be adopted into a Sumatran tiger family - something that had never been done before. The beautifully illustrated story introduces young readers to courage, connection, and the importance of wildlife conservation. Philadelphia Zoo will host a special meet and greet, book signing and tiger feeding with author Debra Kim Wolf on Wednesday, August 27th at 11:00am. The event is open to the public and media, and it is included in the price of Zoo admission. 15) Nine More Critically Endangered Galapagos Tortoises Hatch at Philadelphia Zoo, Totaling 16 Babies for nearly 100-year-old First-Time Mom
The hatchlings significantly boost the U.S. population of
Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises in human care

Philadelphia Zoo is thrilled to share that nine more critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises have hatched inside the Zoo’s Reptile & Amphibian House. These babies are the second clutch of this species to ever hatch in Philadelphia Zoo’s 150+ year history. The hatchlings’ parents, Mommy and Abrazzo, are the Zoo’s oldest residents and are estimated to be nearly 100 years old. The nine new hatchlings, six males and three females, are eating and growing appropriately. These offspring join seven others that hatched earlier this year and made Mommy the oldest first-time mom of her species, now with a total of 16 babies. The hatchlings are spending time inside their habitat in the Reptile & Amphibian House, in their outdoor habitat near the building, and behind-the-scenes. The babies are part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding program to ensure the survival of this species and maintain a genetically diverse population. Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with threats including human-wildlife conflict, the introduction of invasive species, and habitat loss. Including the hatchlings, there are now 60 total Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises in the managed AZA population.

16) The CW Network Brings Romance to Primetime With Six Original Movies Inspired By

Harlequin Bestsellers

Montana Mavericks, Starring Katherine McNamara from The CW’s “Walker: Independence,” to Hit the Big Screen First in Exclusive Partnership with Fathom Entertainment August 26-27

The CW is turning up the romantic heat with a slate of six original primetime movies premiering later this fall, based on beloved and bestselling Harlequin novels.  Presented by CW Originals, Centinel Media and Bell Media, developed in association with Fremantle and produced by Neshama Entertainment, these heartwarming romances feature fan-favorite stars from hit CW series including “Gossip Girl,” “Walker: Independence,” and “The Flash.” Kicking off the lineup in cinematic style, The CW has teamed up with Fathom Entertainment, the leading specialty distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide, to premiere the first of these movies, “Montana Mavericks,” in select theatres nationwide on August 26-27—giving fans an early, big-screen experience before the film’s television debut.

Montana Mavericks
Heather (Katherine McNamara, “Walker: Independence”) is a New York City girl and a best-selling author on a mission to conquer writer’s block and avoid paying back an advance on her next book. Her plans take a sudden swerve when she inherits a family ranch in Montana. With her two best friends, Heather heads out for a “Yellowstone” adventure intent on a quick sale but is blindsided by both the ranch’s dilapidated condition and by Cliff (Dennis Andres, “Workin’ Moms”), the charming cowboy veterinarian next door who challenges her big-city ideals. Heather and her friends find more than they bargained for in this big sky adventure. Linda Kee (“Black Summer”) and Kaya Coleman (“Beyond Black Beauty”) also star.

Ordinary Girl In A Tiara
When vintage fashion devotee Caro Cartwright (Katharine King So, “Transplant”) agrees to harbor her childhood nemesis turned couture heiress Philippa Levreaux (Kathryn Gallagher, “Gossip Girl”), fireworks explode. Despite—or perhaps because of—their differences, these two women help each other wrangle the challenges around them to find a way forward, be their best selves, and fulfill their dreams. This tale of style and moxie proves that opposites not only attract but can enrich the lives of anyone willing to take a chance on themselves and on true love.

Paws In The City                                                                                                                          Issa (Emeraude Toubia, “Shadowhunters”) is a social media whiz on the rise. But when a mishap on her watch accidentally ruins a young starlet’s career, making Issa the most unemployable social media manager in Manhattan, she has no choice but to take the first job she can find—caring for Camila, a glossy-maned and capricious dachshund diva. While ferrying Camila from playdates to pet psychics, Issa realizes the dog’s bark is worse than her bite—much like Camila’s attractive, yet reclusive owner, Theo (Carter Jenkins, “Famous in Love”). What starts as a way to keep a roof over her and her 14-year-old sister’s heads turns into an opportunity for Issa to showcase her skills and reunite her family; it also might be the key to her success in life and love.

Recipe For Romance                                                                                                                    Would-be enemies turn to heartwarming lovers in this story of two warring businesses in Little Manila. Sari (True O’Brien, “Days of Our Lives”) is given the long overdue opportunity to prove herself when her parents head for vacation, placing the family’s coffee shop in her hands. Sari’s big plans are derailed when a bakery run by the annoyingly handsome and charming Gabe (Alex Mallari Jr., “The Adam Project”) opens right next door. This launches a prank war to end all prank wars, bringing Sari and Gabe together in a story of love, family, community, and irresistibly delicious pastries. In the week leading up to the big Little Manila Festival, the two competitors will clash, kiss, and make-up as they navigate their desire for each other and for success.

Savvy Sheldon Feels Good As Hell                                                                                               Savvy Sheldon (Amber Riley, “Glee”) is juggling a lot—a high-stress/low-thanks job, a situationship that has run its course, and the love-worn kitchen she inherited from her cherished grandma who left Savvy her love of cooking and a treasure trove of recipes. Supported by her ride or die mom and best friend, Savvy decides to take control of her destiny and sets out on some renovations, from her career to her kitchen. Isaiah (Dorian Grey, “Transplant”), the dashing contractor, falls for more than Savvy’s delectable cuisine and may just be the secret ingredient to heating up Savvy’s love life, even as she finds her true calling. Nadine Whiteman (“Designated Survivor”) and Malaika Hennie-Hamadi (“Bria Mack Gets a Life”) also star.

Second Guessing Fate
Gemma (Danielle Panabaker, “The Flash”) is a successful event planner with a full life. She has pretty much given up on dating until a fortune teller mysteriously shows up at one of her perfectly planned parties and predicts that Gemma is one last horrible date away from true love. When Gemma goes on what she hopes is her last blind date with Nick (Corey Sevier, “Immortals”), anything and everything goes wrong, including crashing her car into a handsome wealthy stranger, Enzo (Brendan Morgan, “The Handmaid’s Tale”). When the fortune teller’s predictions start to materialize, once cynical Gemma is ready to take a leap of faith. But is Gemma misreading the signs? Only fate knows what’s in store for her. Jocelyn Chugg (“Me and Mr. Christmas”) and Ari Rombough (“The Last of Us”) also star.
