This is Government, written by Nina Kissinger, is about three congressional interns stuck at work during a lockdown. As their patience and snack supply runs out, they follow clues and evidence to get to the bottom of how this situation unfolded and why. A comedy with heart, the show grapples with the real-time consequences of political disarray.
Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

Three longtime friends. One ridiculously expensive painting. Is it art, or is it just the world’s priciest inside joke? What begins as a polite debate over aesthetics and taste devolves into a clash of egos and resentments. Can their friendship survive, or will one of them finally draw the line? It’s just 100 minutes of minimalist art, maximalist laughs, and a moving look at what we really see and forgive in the people we love.

Home: Belonging, From New England to Hawaii
David Rubenstein Atrium
Free
Presented in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic
The series’ inaugural conversation revolves around questions of belonging and the meaning of home within the vast geographic and social range of the U.S. The discussion is inspired by the New York Philharmonic’s performances that week of music by Bartók, a Hungarian expatriate on American soil; Ives, a maverick New Englander; and Leilehua Lanzilotti, whose work is receiving its world premiere—the newly commissioned of light and stone, a composition that honors her Hawaiian home.
This conversation is part of a five-event series examining the American experience in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. Moderated by renowned Juilliard ethnomusicologist and historian Fredara Hadley, each discussion is scheduled to last one hour and will be followed by an audience Q&A.
FOR THE CULTURE SERIES
FOR
SATURDAY CHURCH
New York Theatre Workshop recently announced details for their For The Culture Series for the world premiere of the new musical Saturday Church.
Saturday Church tells the story of Ulysses—New York City kid, devoted son and the fiercest tenor at his aunt’s church. A chance encounter on the subway introduces him to the world of Saturday Church, a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth. Caught between two worlds, Ulysses wrestles with family and faith as he strives to find the place where he can love and be loved—in all his fabulousness. This new musical captures the joy of embodied liberation and the profound power of faith, with a score that soars from the transcendence of gospel to the exhilarating vibrations of house music and pop. Saturday Church boldly asks, “is faith only for the Holy?” and, more importantly, “are there any queens in the house?!!!!”
Through their For The Culture Series (FTC), NYTW seeks to bridge the gap between the world we know and the world we are actively striving to build – where we harness the power of theatre to deepen human connections by learning and growing from the lived experiences of each other; connect through art, shared customs, traditions and heritage(s); and where we amplify artists and work by traditionally underrepresented groups or individuals, creating access to the Workshop for historically marginalized communities in order to build and sustain authentic relationships with our fellow community members and theatergoers.
For the Culture affinity events will be held on select dates and will include the following:
AfterWords: Designing the World of Saturday Church—Wednesday September 3

Each session is hosted by a local artist who leads the group through a variety of traditional maritime work songs and ballads. Throughout the event, attendees of all skill levels are welcome to take the stage for this round-robin where you can sing and share the chantey of your choice. Attendees are encouraged to sing along with the chorus but you can feel free to just sit back and enjoy the music.
Advanced registration is encouraged. Walkups will be accommodated as possible.
What is a Chantey Sing?
Old-time sailors on long voyages spent months living together in close quarters with no outside entertainment, no new people to interact with, a monotonous diet, and each day pretty much just like the day before. How did they keep their spirits up? Singing together! Work songs and fun songs, story songs and nonsense songs, songs of nostalgia and songs of up-to-the-moment news—all were part of the repertoire onboard. At South Street Seaport Museum, the chantey tradition lives on.

The Metropolitan Opera
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
by Mason Bates, Libretto by Gene Scheer
Monday, September 8, 2025 at 7pm
Works & Process presents The Metropolitan Opera’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 7pm at Guggenheim New York in the Peter B. Lewis Theater, 1071 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10128. Tickets can be purchased here.
Enjoy an advance look at the exhilarating new adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, which opens the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 season on September 21. Set shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the opera follows two Jewish cousins who invent an anti-fascist superhero and launch their own comic book series, hoping to recruit the United States into the fight against Nazism.
Featuring an eclectic score by composer Mason Bates that incorporates scintillating electronic elements and a variety of musical styles, the opera moves seamlessly through the three distinct worlds of Gene Scheer’s libretto: Nazi-occupied Prague, the bustling streets of New York, and the technicolor realm of comic book fantasy. Ahead of the opera’s thrilling premiere, Met general manager Peter Gelb moderates a conversation with director Barlett Sher, Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Bates and Scheer. Mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce, tenor Miles Mykkanen, and baritone Andrzej Filończyk perform highlights from the score, then join the discussion.
Continue the conversation at a post-performance reception in the rotunda.
