I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

1) False Steps

Her varied background, as a nationally published humorist, an actress, and ballroom dancer (she and dance partner and co-lead, Ronny Dutra, are 2019 National Pro Am Rhythm Champions) put her in perfect position to create Sophie Applebaum, both on the page (co-writing FALSE STEPS with Kim St Leon) and on the stage. Previous acting credits include Mrs. Frank (The Diary ofAnne Frank), Edna (The Prisoner of Second Avenue), Sara (Sisters Rosenzweig), Norma (Plaza Suite), film work, and a recurring character on Nickelodeon’s Talia In The Kitchen

Theatre at St. Clements (423 W. 46th St.)

2) Galas

When playwright Charles Ludlam invented the iconic opera singer at the center of his ridiculous comedy Galas (rhymes with Callas), he likely never imagined a real prima donna in the role. With Anthony Roth Costanzo taking the stage in Eric Ting’s new production, the dream Ludlam never dreamed comes true. As the titular Maria Magdalena Galas, Costanzo embodies extravagance, camp, and diva, but – with his famous countertenor shimmering between the moments of absurdity – opens his heart and lays bare to us both the beauty and the pain pumping through the veins of any great artist.

For years he has lived with a rare nerve disorder, Trigeminal Neuralgia, which causes frequent sudden and intense pain in his head and face. Featured in the Los Angeles Times for both his comedy and the disease, Kyle performs his show about his experience living with the disease, getting misdiagnosed for years, getting brain surgery, the successful brain surgery eventually wearing off, and what life looks like when you may have tried everything and nothing works. We’ve got to laugh at some point.

The inner sanctum of Confederate president Jefferson Davis has been breached. Information is leaking to the enemy. Who is the spy? No one is privy to this information except Jeffersons advisors, and they are beyond repute. Based on a true story, Lady Patriot reveals an intimate look into the prejudices and patriotism of three ladies who lived during the Civil War: Varina Davis, Elizabeth Van Lew, and Mary Bowser. Lady Patriot combines Langes signature comedy and drama as it peels away traditional stereotypes prevalent in the South during the Confederacy.

The experience travels from station to station through a maze-like installation with guidance from performers. Double Bill: Latchkey Larky & Gifted
Written and Performed by Sofia Javed & Becca Rothman
Sofia drinks chai with her Pakistani family in Chicago; Becca has Shabbat dinners with her Jewish family in Baltimore. These two GenX comedians and storytellers come from different backgrounds, but their stories share universal themes. Join us for an evening of hilarious adventures in growing up, fitting in, and grappling with who we really are.

IPhones still might be 30 years in the future, but growing up in early 90s Chicago still meant plenty of screen time. Sofia Javed’s new comedy show Latchkey Larky is about being a child of hard-working immigrant parents, a student of teachers who don’t understand her culture, and a devotee of television sitcoms… that provide her real education.

In a lot of ways, Becca Rothman is like her family. And in a lot of other ways, not so much. Whenever she is “too much” (which is often) they call out “RebeccAgenda!!!” as a kind of shorthand for how she moves through the world: always with some sort of scheme, always a messy tornado, and always, always in motion. At what point do we begin to realize that some things we get from our families, and some things are just who we are? Join Becca on a spellbinding journey about growing up, a surprise gift that changed the way she sees the world, and the mysteries that we discover - and sometimes solve - along the way.

FOR THE CULTURE SERIES

FOR

SATURDAY CHURCH

New York Theatre Workshop recently announced details for their For The Culture Series for the world premiere of the new musical Saturday Church

Saturday Church tells the story of Ulysses—New York City kid, devoted son and the fiercest tenor at his aunt’s church. A chance encounter on the subway introduces him to the world of Saturday Church, a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ youth. Caught between two worlds, Ulysses wrestles with family and faith as he strives to find the place where he can love and be loved—in all his fabulousness. This new musical captures the joy of embodied liberation and the profound power of faith, with a score that soars from the transcendence of gospel to the exhilarating vibrations of house music and pop. Saturday Church boldly asks, “is faith only for the Holy?” and, more importantly, “are there any queens in the house?!!!!”

Through their For The Culture Series (FTC), NYTW seeks to bridge the gap between the world we know and the world we are actively striving to build – where we harness the power of theatre to deepen human connections by learning and growing from the lived experiences of each other; connect through art, shared customs, traditions and heritage(s); and where we amplify artists and work by traditionally underrepresented groups or individuals, creating access to the Workshop for historically marginalized communities in order to build and sustain authentic relationships with our fellow community members and theatergoers.

For the Culture affinity events will be held on select dates and will include the following:

AfterWords: Designing the World of Saturday Church—Wednesday September 3

Attendees are encouraged to sing along with the chorus but you can feel free to just sit back and enjoy the music.

What is a Chantey Sing?

Old-time sailors on long voyages spent months living together in close quarters with no outside entertainment, no new people to interact with, a monotonous diet, and each day pretty much just like the day before. How did they keep their spirits up? Singing together! Work songs and fun songs, story songs and nonsense songs, songs of nostalgia and songs of up-to-the-moment news—all were part of the repertoire onboard. At South Street Seaport Museum, the chantey tradition lives on.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

by Mason Bates, Libretto by Gene Scheer

Monday, September 8, 2025 at 7pm

Works & Process presents The Metropolitan Opera’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 7pm at Guggenheim New York in the Peter B. Lewis Theater, 1071 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10128. Tickets can be purchased here.

Enjoy an advance look at the exhilarating new adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, which opens the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 season on September 21. Set shortly before the outbreak of World War II, the opera follows two Jewish cousins who invent an anti-fascist superhero and launch their own comic book series, hoping to recruit the United States into the fight against Nazism.

Featuring an eclectic score by composer Mason Bates that incorporates scintillating electronic elements and a variety of musical styles, the opera moves seamlessly through the three distinct worlds of Gene Scheer’s libretto: Nazi-occupied Prague, the bustling streets of New York, and the technicolor realm of comic book fantasy. Ahead of the opera’s thrilling premiere, Met general manager Peter Gelb moderates a conversation with director Barlett Sher, Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Bates and Scheer. Mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce, tenor Miles Mykkanen, and baritone Andrzej Filończyk perform highlights from the score, then join the discussion.
