I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Books: The Sign for Home

Today we are recommending The Sign for Home by Blair Fell. If you are looking for a book that will really give you the opportunity to experience life vicariously like you have never experienced it before and live in another person's shoes, this book definitely fits the bill. The Sign for Home is the story of a DeafBlind man named, Arlo who has been kept under the thumb of his guardian/uncle a strict Jehovah's Witness but he can't get the memory of the girl he once loved out of his mind. When Arlo gets a new interpreter, Cyril, he starts to learn more about what he is missing out on and the things his uncle has kept from him. He begins to experience new things and take charge of his own life which leads him on a journey to find out what really happened to the girl he loved,

Arlo is a really strong drawn character and the way the book is written you really get inside his head and learn about what it is like to go through life without being able to see or hear. The story is unique and interesting and extremely touching. All in all, it is a great book.

Movies: The Last Tourist

The Last Tourist is an extremely eye-opening documentary about travel. It details everything that is wrong with tourism and the travel industry. The problems of pollution left by tourists and the exploitation of children and animals are just some of the topics covered in this film. Even the things that may seem good about tourism like the boon it allegedly gives to the local economy may not be what they seem. Often it's only the big companies that are raking in the tourist dollars while the locals live in poverty.

The film is not advocating for all tourism to stop, however.  According to the filmmakers, there is a better way to travel a way that is better for the environment, better for the people, and better for the animals. It's called Ecotravel,  and it's not as hard as you think. If you care at all about the world we live in and the people and animals that inhabit it, you are definitely going to want to travel in a better way after seeing this film.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
