All J.S. Bach Program
Easter Oratorio, BWV 249
Jesu, meine Freude BWV 227
Written when Bach was at the height of his musical powers, the Easter Oratorio includes such biblical roles as John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene, performed by solo singers without the extensive narration found in other large-scale Bach works. It marked one of the composer’s early collaborations with Christian Friedrich Henrici, with whom he would work for the rest of his life. After its 1725 premiere, Bach continued to refine and expand the Oratorio over the next two decades. Also on the program is Bach’s most popular and revered motets, Jesu, meine Freude BWV 227 in 11 movements.
Tickets, priced at $35, $55, and $75, are available at aconyc.org; by calling ACO at 212.362.2727, ext. 4; and by visiting lincolncenter.org or calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500. 19) STEPPENWOLF’s production of
THE MINUTES
NOW PREVIEWING ON BROADWAY
Opens officially April 17, 2022
At the Studio 54 on Broadway
Steppenwolf’s production of Tracy Letts’ new play THE MINUTES is now previewing on Broadway, with an official opening night set for Sunday, April 17 on Broadway at Studio 54 (254 West 54th Street).
The Minutes, the record-breaking hit production from Steppenwolf Theatre Company, takes a hard look at the inner workings of a city council meeting and the hypocrisy, greed and ambition that bubble to the surface when a newcomer to the small town of Big Cherry starts to ask the wrong questions. Why is someone on the council mysteriously missing? What happened to all those bicycles? Is there skullduggery afoot with the city’s finances? What’s the deal with the available parking space? What the F is going on with the Lincoln Smackdown? And why are the minutes from the last meeting being kept secret? “Nothing in this explosive 90-minute play is as it seems...A real-life heart-in-the-mouth experience,” declares the Chicago Tribune. Part “Parks & Recreation,” part “Twilight Zone,” this powerful, resonant, and funny portrayal of democracy in action proves that everything you know can change—it’s just a matter of minutes. After all, the smallest towns keep the biggest secrets.
This is a 16-week limited engagement through Sunday, July 24, 2022.

Tickets for THE MINUTES are available online at TheMinutesBroadway.com or by calling 800-447-7400. Ticket prices range from $39-$169, with Premium tickets starting at $199. |
Program Led by Leon Botstein Featuring Pianist Wynona Wang in Busoni’s Indian Fantasy |
|
The Orchestra Now (TŌN) will present the final program in the 2021-22 season of its popular Sight & Sound series at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Sunday, April 10. The program, led by Leon Botstein, focuses on the European fascination with the unfamiliar culture of native peoples in the New World by exploring connections among Eugène Delacroix’s painting The Natchez and other artworks, and music by composers Ferruccio Busoni and Antonín Dvořák. Soloist Wynona Wang, first-prize winner of the 2018 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, performs Busoni’s rarely heard Indian Fantasy for piano and orchestra.
In all Sight & Sound concerts, conductor and music historian Leon Botstein explores the parallels between orchestral music and the visual arts. Leon Botstein, conductor
Antonin Dvořák: Symphony No. 9, "From the New World" (second movement)
Ferruccio Busoni: Indian Fantasy for piano and orchestra
Eugène Delacroix: The Natchez
From their earliest encounters in the New World, Europeans were mesmerized by the indigenous peoples of North America. French Romantic artist Eugène Delacroix painted a Natchez family during the 1730s massacre of their tribe by French forces, and their flight up the Mississippi River. In the Paris Salon catalogue description of the work, the artist explained “During the voyage, the woman was taken by pain of labor. The moment is that when the father holds the newborn in his hands, and both regard him tenderly." Ferruccio Busoni’s Indian Fantasy (1913–14) is inspired by indigenous melodies and rhythms recorded by Natalie Curtis Burlin, a pioneer in American ethnomusicology who had studied with the composer. Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony, premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 1893, was written while the composer was living in New York City as director of the National Conservatory of Music, founded to create a style independent from European composers. The Symphony’s second movement was inspired by Longfellow’s poem on Hiawatha.
Eugène Delacroix’s The Natchez is on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 19th and Early 20th Century European Paintings and Sculpture collection.
Tickets priced at $30–$50, include same-day museum admission and may be purchased online here, by calling The Met at 212.570.3949, or at any desk in The Great Hall at The Met Fifth Avenue. 30) PERFORMANCES RESUME!
THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY’S
WORLD PREMIERE PRESENTATION OF
PENELOPE, OR HOW THE ODYSSEY WAS
REALLY WRITTEN
A NEW MUSICAL COMEDY
AT THE THEATRE AT ST. JEANS
LIMITED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL 24, 2022
OPENING NIGHT IS THURSDAY, APRIL 7, 2022 AT 7:00PM
The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), following a recent Covid breakthrough, resumed preview performances of the world premiere presentation of Penelope, or How the Odyssey Was Really Written, a new musical comedy, with book & lyrics by Peter Kellogg (York’s Desperate Measures), music by Stephen Weiner (The Rivals), directed and choreographed by Emily Maltby (York’s Lolita, My Love), with music direction and orchestrations by David Hancock Turner (York’s Cheek to Cheek, Desperate Measures) and vocal arrangements by David Hancock Turner, Steve Delehanty, and Stephen Weiner. Penelope is married to Odysseus, the rightful King of Ithaca. For the last twenty years, she’s been waiting for him to return from the Trojan War. Meanwhile, a bevy of suitors have gathered, each wanting to marry her and take over the kingdom. Since they have little else to do but eat and drink, they decide to form an a capella group. (The acoustics in the great hall are terrific.) To stall them, Penelope writes letters to herself and pretends they’re from Odysseus saying he’s on his way. Little does she know, her letters gathered together are creating the story of The Odyssey. (Since no one knows who really wrote The Odyssey, this theory is as good as any other.) It's funny, it’s fierce and, above all, it's epic!** Penelope plays the following performance schedule: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m,
