Joshua was on the Broadway national tour of "Avenue Q," the lead puppeteer in "Peter Pan 360" (ThreeSixty Entertainment), and he garnered an Arts Impulse award as well as an IRNE nomination for "Best Actor in a Musical" as Bill Snibson in "Me & My Girl" (Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston). He worked with international street artist Banksy on his controversial piece "Sirens of the Lambs." Previews have now begun tomorrow for the Broadway premiere of Escape to Margaritaville, the new musical featuring the songs of iconic singer-songwriter-author Jimmy Buffett, at the Marquis Theatre (210 West 46th Street) ahead of an official opening on Thursday, March 15.
In celebration of the show’s first Broadway performance, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, featuring both original songs along with many of Mr. Buffett’s classics, is now available both digitally and on CD tomorrow. The Escape to Margaritaville Cast Recording is produced by Mailboat Records, Mike Utley, Mac McAnally, and Christopher Jahnke.
Escape to Margaritaville will also release a limited number of same-day $40 lottery tickets for all performances, beginning Monday, February 19, at the Marquis Theatre. The tickets will be available via a digital lottery, powered by Broadway Direct, that will open at 7AM each day. Winners will be notified by email after the drawing and will have 60 minutes to pay for their tickets with a credit card online. This panel offers an important look at the new tax laws with respect to organization & entity structure, tax rates and how the new law bleeds down to the individual, whether producer or performer. Apart from the rate changes, and substantial bracket swings, there are quite a number of other surprising things both incorporated in the new law as well as left out. There are major reductions in tax deductions at the entity level but a near elimination of miscellaneous itemized deductions on the individual level making it very difficult for the small employee-performer. The doubling of the standard deduction may help some, but there are no personal exemptions left in the tax code. We'll look at how the tax laws might impact donor giving, and alternate strategies for maintaining and possibly growing support. Has the target donor base changed because of the change in deductions? On the plus side, perhaps, there are benefits in the new law for the self-employed and small business owner of either a partnership or S-corporation that could reduce taxable income from these specific entities. Our speakers will guide you through this confusing government-imposed maze and help manage expectations for artists.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) presents the second workshop in the series How to Wrote a Musical That Works, Conflict & Obstacles, onSunday, February 25, 2018 from 10am - 6pm at NOLA Rehearsal Studio, 244 W 54th St., 5th floor, Studio 5. Submission fee is $10 for members, $20 for non-members. If accepted, it will be applied to a participation fee of $100 ($80 for TRU members). This workshop is dedicated to fostering a conversation about musical theater structure not only for writers but also for producers, directors and everyone involved in the creation and production of new works.
The professional panel of commercial producers, directors and writers will include:
- Ken Cerniglia, dramaturg and literary manager of Disney Theatrical;
- Cheryl Davis, Kleban and Larsen Award winning librettist and lyricist (Barnstormer), Audelco Award winning playwright (Maid's Door);
- Nancy Golladay, literary consultant (NY Shakespeare Festival, O'Neill Conference, more), moderator of the BMI Librettists' Workshop;
- Skip Kennon, composer/lyricist (Her
ringbone, Don Juan DeMarco, Time and Again), former artistic coordinator of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and teacher for two decades; - Bob Ost, executive director of Theater Resources Unlimited, and TRU Literary Manager Cate Cammarata will facilitate.
Writers (or producers!) are invited to submit no more than 25 pages of a show in a development. Submit selections of the show in which conflict and obstacles arise - the plot complications - plus MP3s of the songs within only those pages. Also send a concise synopsis of the opening in which the world of your show is introduced, and the want of characters and how it prepares the audience for the conflict in the section presented.
In the workshop the focus will be on three main aspects:
- 1) Songs that express differing points of view, or conflict;
- 2) "Turnaround Songs" in which a character changes his course of action;
- 3) The climactic moment (sometimes the first act finale) that drives us forward into the resolution (note: "resolution" will be in workshop #3)
Discussion will focus on "I am" songs and "I feel" songs, and the function of each, with special attention paid to the way they move the action. In addition, the workshop will continually explore the delicate balance between script and song.

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, will present the 1961 Broadway musical Subways Are for Sleeping with music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, the final show in the Winter 2018 Musicals in Mufti Series celebrating the work of the legendary composer Jule Styne. Performances are set to begin Saturday afternoon, February 24, 2018 for 11 performances only through Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). The Winter 2018 series concludes with the 1961 Broadway musical Subways Are for Sleeping with music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, suggested by the book by Edmund G. Love. Originally produced by David Merrick, Subways tells the tale of Angie, a reporter sent to get the scoop on a segment of NYC society—a group of well-dressed homeless people sleeping in the New York subway system—that lives by their own rules. Going undercover, Angie learns how the carefree other half lives and begins to see there might be another way to experience the world. Subways Are for Sleeping is perhaps best known for an infamous publicity stunt in which Merrick invited New Yorkers with the same names as some of the prominent theatre critics at the time, using their favorable reviews in a print ad.
The York Theatre Company’s acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series of musical theatre gems, performed in a simply-staged, book-in-hand concert format, is celebrating its twenty-fourth historic year of worthy shows from the past that deserve a second look. Mufti means “in street clothes, without the trappings of a full production.”
