I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Mnozil Brass and America

Thursday February 22, 8:00 PM
Mnozil Brass

This septet from Vienna is probably the most unique brass ensemble ever. With their musical virtuosity mixed with their own special kind of comedy, the only way to describe Mnozil Brass is possibly to label them a cross between Mr Bean and the Monty Python of the music world. They will be plumbing the depths of their instruments once again to entertain you in this brand new show, Cirque. Entering the ring to combat the monkey business of daily life with music and humor, transforming the stage into a musical flea circus.

America

The year 2017 marks the 47th anniversary of perennial classic-rock favorite and Grammy Award®-winning band, America, as well as a tour stop at State Theatre New Jersey!  Founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell met in London high school in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized their way to the top of the charts on the strength of their signature song "A Horse With No Name." With other hits like "I Need You," "Ventura Highway," and "Lonely People," America established themselves as cornerstones on the 1970's Top 40 charts and rock radio. Now, 40 plus years later, these friends are still making music together, touring the world, and thrilling audiences with their timeless sound.

Theater Resources Unlimited
announces their February Panel
The Implications of the New Tax Laws
for Artists, Producers & Non-Profits
Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 7:30pm, networking at 7pm

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) offers an important conversation onTuesday, February 20, 2018The Implications of the New Tax Laws for Artists, Producers & Non-Profits at 7:30pm (doors open for networking at7pm) at The Playroom Theatre, 151 W. 46th Street, 8th fl., NYC. For more details, visit https://truonline.org/events/new-tax-laws/. Free for TRU members;$12.50 for non-members in advance ($15 at door), free for TRU.  Please use the bright red reservation box at https://truonline.org/events/new-tax-laws/, or call at least a day in advance (or much sooner) for reservations: 212-714-7628; or e-mail TRUStaff1@gmail.com.

Speakers to include: Bailie Slevin, financial consultant with Entertaining Finance, a business management and financial consulting firm geared specifically toward creatives; Dave Spaulding, Enrolled Agent (EA), Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) and the Accredited Domestic Partnership Advisor (ADPA) and partner at Phillips Gold & Partners; other to be announced.

This panel offers an important look at the new tax laws with respect to organization & entity structure, tax rates and how the new law bleeds down to the individual, whether producer or performer. Apart from the rate changes, and substantial bracket swings, there are quite a number of other surprising things both incorporated in the new law as well as left out. There are major reductions in tax deductions at the entity level but a near elimination of miscellaneous itemized deductions on the individual level making it very difficult for the small employee-performer. The doubling of the standard deduction may help some, but there are no personal exemptions left in the tax code. We'll look at how the tax laws might impact donor giving, and alternate strategies for maintaining and possibly growing support. Has the target donor base changed because of the change in deductions? On the plus side, perhaps, there are benefits in the new law for the self-employed and small business owner of either a partnership or S-corporation that could reduce taxable income from these specific entities. Our speakers will guide you through this confusing government-imposed maze and help manage expectations for artists.

  • Cheryl Davis, Kleban and Larsen Award winning librettist and lyricist (Barnstormer), Audelco Award winning playwright (Maid's Door);

Submit selections of the show in which conflict and obstacles arise - the plot complications - plus MP3s of the songs within only those pages. Also send a concise synopsis of the opening in which the world of your show is introduced, and the want of characters and how it prepares the audience for the conflict in the section presented.

In the workshop the focus will be on three main aspects:

  • 1) Songs that express differing points of view, or conflict;
  • 2) "Turnaround Songs" in which a character changes his course of action;
  • 3) The climactic moment (sometimes the first act finale) that drives us forward into the resolution (note: "resolution" will be in workshop #3)

Discussion will focus on "I am" songs and "I feel" songs, and the function of each, with special attention paid to the way they move the action. In addition, the workshop will continually explore the delicate balance between script and song.

It’s a testing ground for what happens when personal and professional personas find themselves at odds. A young security guard (Cera) with big ambitions clashes with his stern boss (Henry), an intense rookie cop (Powley) and her unpredictable partner (Evans) in LOBBY HERO, the acclaimed play from the 2017 Oscar-winning writer of Manchester by the Sea.

AT THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY AT SAINT PETER’S

OPENING NIGHT IS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2018 AT 7:00PM

Are subways really for sleeping?  The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Executive Director), dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, will present the 1961 Broadway musical Subways Are for Sleeping with music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Greenthe final show in the Winter 2018 Musicals in Mufti Series celebrating the work of the legendary composer Jule Styne. Performances are set to begin Saturday afternoon, February 24, 2018 for 11 performances only through Sunday, March 4, 2018 at the York Theatre Company at Saint Peter’s (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). Opening Night is Sunday evening, February 25, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

The Winter 2018 series concludes with the 1961 Broadway musical Subways Are for Sleeping with music by Jule Styne and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, suggested by the book by Edmund G. Love. Originally produced by David Merrick, Subways tells the tale of Angie, a reporter sent to get the scoop on a segment of NYC society—a group of well-dressed homeless people sleeping in the New York subway system—that lives by their own rules. Going undercover, Angie learns how the carefree other half lives and begins to see there might be another way to experience the world.  Subways Are for Sleeping is perhaps best known for an infamous publicity stunt in which Merrick invited New Yorkers with the same names as some of the prominent theatre critics at the time, using their favorable reviews in a print ad.

The York Theatre Company’s acclaimed Musicals in Mufti series of musical theatre gems, performed in a simply-staged, book-in-hand concert format, is celebrating its twenty-fourth historic year of worthy shows from the past that deserve a second look.  Mufti means “in street clothes, without the trappings of a full production.”

Single tickets for the Winter 2018 Musicals in Mufti series are priced at $45 (Weekdays and Saturday nights), and $50 (Weekend matinees). York Member single tickets are priced at $31.50 (all performances).
