Books: This is Where We Die & Our Last Resort
Today, we are talking about Our Last Resort by Clemence Michallon. Frida and Gabriel grew up as brother and sister in a cult. After escaping together, they've been separated since a tragedy and are now reconnecting at the Ara Hotel in the Utah desert when they are drawn into another tragedy. This is an annoyingly slow-paced thriller. Although there are some surprising twists and turns along the way, the main character, who is somewhat hard to like from the start, becomes less and less likable as the book goes along. Ultimately, she has committed some actions that are selfish and unforgivable and cannot be dismissed merely because of her difficult upbringing. This makes it hard to like her or the book.
Film: Sunlight
Today, we are recommending Sunlight. This is a film about a couple of losers who gradually form a connection. Jane is a woman who retreats into a monkey costume in the wake of a failed relationship, while Roy is a man who wants to dig up his dead father to get the watch his father cheated him out of. Although the movie starts out feeling bizarre and somewhat unpleasant, it gradually grows on you. In the end, the two make an oddly touching pair. Be warned, however, this movie is full of inappropriate language and vulgarity, which may be off-putting for some people and makes it completely unsuitable for children.
And that's our view. This Is Where Die is publishing today. Our Last Resort will publish next Tuesday, July 8. Sunlight is in limited release in movie theaters now.
Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
