Despite the more recent explosion of lurid interest in true crime, true crime is not a new phenomenon. There have been sensationally shocking crimes that have captured the public's attention throughout time immemorial. Rachel McCarthy James's new book, Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder, focuses particularly on the axe as a method of crime. In this fascinating book, she not only traces the history of such crimes, delving deeply into specific examples along the way, but she also discusses the evolution of the axe's role in daily life and what made it a suitable and/or convenient weapon of choice at various times throughout history.
