Robert Motherwell was an abstract expressionist, painter, and printmaker. He was part of the New York School, an informal group of artists from various disciplines active in the 1950s and 1960s. Recently, the New York Public Library was gifted with a collection of his work and several books from his library. Some of these are currently on display in the exhibit Robert Motherwell at Home and in the Studio, which is now open at the Stephen A. Schwartzman branch of the library.
Motherwell was an avid reader. Many of the books in his collection, including at least some of those in the exhibit, contain his handwritten annotations. His love for reading was also reflected in his work. He often incorporated literary references in his art.
