Maddie: A New Musical is based on the book, Marion's Wall, by Jack Finney, better known for books like The Body Snatchers and Time and Again. The plot revolves around a young couple, Nick and Jan, who move into an old apartment inhabited by the ghost of a former dancer, Maddie, who then begins inhabiting the young woman's body, trying to get her second chance at stardom. However, don't be fooled by the description; the show's tone is more lighthearted and whimsical than dark and creepy thriller.
While the plot is fun, the songs are not very memorable, although they are beautifully sung by the talented cast. There is nothing that you will leave the theater humming. However, what really makes this show shine is the performances, particularly that of lead performer Kelly Maur. Aside from her lovely voice, Ms. Maur gives an incredibly nuanced performance in the dual role of Jan and Maddie, and her transitions between the two are seamless. Other standouts include Lexis Trechak, in a feisty turn as Jan's friend and co-worker, Sally, and Shannon Payette Seip, who delightfully and hysterically chews up the scenery, providing comic relief in the role of Cordelia Van Arc. You will definitely want to see this one for the terrific performances!
