I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

2) Bus Stop

On a snowy night in Kansas, a diner can be an oasis, a prison, a place to hide, or a place to discover yourself. When a bus is forced to take shelter from stormy weather outside, a mismatched group of dreamers and cowboys, waitresses and outcasts find unexpected warmth in one another.  In William Inge’s 1955 classic, this great playwright of the Midwest gives voice to memorable characters who’ll linger like the perfect cup of diner coffee. This production of Bus Stop will be the first to feature an all-Asian American cast taking on this quintessential play of the Midwest.

Lynn F. Angelson Theatre (136 E. 13th St.)

3) Cracked Open

Each May, Mental Health Awareness Month provides an opportunity to amplify conversations around mental health, encourage understanding, and break the stigma that prevents so many from seeking help. At its core, CRACKED OPEN is a powerful, timely story about a family whose love is tested when their 17-year-old daughter experiences the sudden onset of mental illness. As they struggle to understand her new reality, they must navigate the complexities of treatment, social stigma, and their own fears, ultimately discovering the resilience that binds them together.

4) The Imaginary Invalid

The Imaginary Invalid is the last play that legendary French playwright Molière wrote and was originally conceived as a Comedy-Ballet where theater, dance and music are intertwined. Gravely ill while writing and performing this play, Molière explores the fear of disease and the exploitation it breeds through his infinitely humorous dialogue and in-your-face satire.

5) Lunar Eclipse

Late on a summer night, in a field on their Kentucky farm, a long-married couple, George (Birney) and Em (Emery), have come to watch a lunar eclipse. As the seven stages of the celestial phenomenon unfold, the two sip bourbon and reflect on land and legacy, children and dogs.  But as more and more is revealed, they realize they are as much a mystery to each other as the heavens above.  LUNAR ECLIPSE is the funny, moving, universal story of a couple reckoning with the time they’ve spent on earth and the time they have left.

6) O.K.!

Inside the dressing room of a regional theater in Oklahoma, it's 90 minutes until curtain for the all-new production of O.K.!, a bilingual parody of some other musical the producers couldn’t get the rights for. Melinda receives a disturbing phone call that sends her spiraling like a tornado. Due to the state's recent abortion ban, her upcoming appointment has been canceled indefinitely. Melinda's meltdown captures the attention of her wisecracking New York Latina cast mates who come to her rescue.

Together, they navigate a post-Roe America with grievances, fears, necessary humor, and even some tarot cards. As the minutes go by, and with the show starting soon, the women become desperate to know: what will Melinda do next?

7) Those Who Remained

In this transformative multimedia solo show, Sophia Gutchinov explores the profound depths of love through a deeply personal lens of Indigenous ceremony and modern dating. Drawing from her unique Italian-Mongolian heritage, she weaves a narrative that bridges cultural divides, reflecting her background of a Buddhist father and Catholic mother. The performance incorporates projections, comedy, and spoken word, creating an immersive experience that confronts personal roots and identity. Collaborating with artists from diverse backgrounds – including AAPI, Latin, Black, LGBTQ+, and Kalmyk tribal performers – Gutchinov examines her family’s complex history, including her grandparents’ escape from WWII, her parent’s nomadic journey to…New Jersey, and her recent journey to her father’s homeland, all viewed through an intersection of acting and neuroscience. Recommended for audiences 16+.

8) Hadestown

Ali Louis Bourzgui joins the cast as Orpheus 5/6
Myra Molloy joins the cast as Euryduce 5/6

Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone — Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Mitchell’s beguiling melodies and Chavkin’s poetic imagination pit industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, Hadestown delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 35 in D Major, “Haffner”

Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, Op. 58

The program opens with Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto in B-flat Major, written in 1774 when he was 18 years old. One of the most famous and studied bassoon pieces of all time, it was Mozart’s first concerto for wind instruments, especially prized for emphasizing the instrument’s sweet tenor voice. The soloist is ACO and Handel and Haydn Society Principal Bassoonist Andrew Schwartz, whose career has taken him from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra to jazz recordings with Wynton Marsalis. The Concerto is followed by Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, also known as the “Haffner.” The work was commissioned by Sigmund Haffner, a wealthy Salzburg merchant and friend of Mozart’s father, Leopold. Haffner asked if Wolfgang could compose a new symphony to be played at the ennoblement of his son. The symphony was completed when Mozart was 26 years old and first performed in 1783 at the Vienna Burgtheater. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, which offers a lyrical conversation between piano and orchestra that demonstrates Beethoven’s power of invention. The work premiered with the composer at the keyboard in 1808 in a four-hour-long program that included the premieres of his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien. The concerto was neglected until it was revived by Felix Mendelssohn in 1836, nine years after Beethoven’s death. The performance features renowned Hungarian fortepianist Petra Somlai, professor at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and first prize-winner at the International Fortepiano Competition in Bruges, Belgium.

Tickets, priced at $75, $55, and $35, are available at aconyc.org; by calling ACO at (212) 362-2727, ext.4; at lincolncenter.org or the Alice Tully Hall box office; or by calling CenterCharge at 212.721.6500.

12) Upcoming at the American Museum of Natural History

SciCafe: Sea Slugs, Pirates of the Ocean

Wednesday, May 7, at 7 pm

In the underwater arms race, some organisms don’t just hunt—they steal their prey’s best defenses. Join Jessica Goodheart, assistant curator in the Museum’s Division of Invertebrate Zoology, for an exploration of sea slugs and nudibranchs, extraordinary marine animals that have evolved the ability to “borrow” chemical defenses from sponges, anemones, and other prey. Like real-life pirates, these soft-bodied creatures compensate for their lost protective shells by hijacking venomous stingers and potent compounds, turning their meals into powerful tools for survival. This phenomenon isn’t just a marvel of evolution. It has real-world applications in medicine. Discover how these tiny ocean nomads draw fascinating parallels to other species, including poison dart frogs and flatworms.

22) Upcoming at Lincoln Center
for the Performing Arts:

Thursday, May 8 at 7:30 pm
David Rubenstein Atrium
Free
A kaleidoscope of Armenian folk music through both a historical and modern interactive lens, Komitas and Friends celebrates the interdisciplinary, ever-changing legacy of folk songs deeply rooted in Armenian culture even today. This program is derived from music notated and transcribed by Komitas Vardapet, a pioneering ethnomusicologist, composer, and priest who gathered thousands of folk songs at the turn of the 20th century, immortalizing folk tunes for generations to come. A wide array of songs present themselves in their original form for voice, as well as in classical and jazz transcriptions that have kept these melodies alive throughout the last 100 years, interspersing them in various genres and musical spaces all over the world. This program also includes the world premieres of five brand-new works of music commissioned by The Juilliard School and The Columbia University Armenian Center—the result of a cultural exchange project led by Juilliard student Anoush Pogossian for five of her Juilliard peers to write pieces for her to perform, each one based on a different one of the folk songs of her upbringing as a member of the Armenian diaspora.

Then, bring your design to life by making an impression print—just like traditional block printing techniques! Design your own unique illustration or choose from pre-made templates provided by the Seaport Museum. Before you roll up your sleeves and try your hand at printing, make sure to visit the new exhibition Maritime City as well as Bowne & Co. Stationers to see examples of historical printing, equipment including a printing press, and more! The activity was developed for participants ages 5 and up. This will take place indoors at 207 Water Street but may be moved to the cobblestone street in front of the building if the weather is nice. Jane’s Walk at the Seaport Museum | Lower Manhattan | Free

Celebrate architecture and design with the South Street Seaport Museum’s walking tour offered in The Municipal Art Society of New York’s (MAS) annual Jane’s Walk NYC weekend. This annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations is inspired by urbanist, author, and activist Jane Jacobs. During the weekend, the simple act of exploring the city is enhanced with personal observations, local history, and civic engagement. Reserve your space today for the Seaport Museum’s tour Remembering Fulton Fish Market with artist Naima Rauam who spent decades painting scenes of market life. While the fish and the smell are gone the legend of the Fulton Fish Market lives on through this walking tour. During this “then and now” walk, Rauam’s paintings show “then” at nine locations, as the group stands “now” at these spots. Throughout the tour, Rauam will discuss the history of the fish market and her experiences working and living there. seaportmuseum.org/janes-walk

About the Jane’s Walk Tour Guide

Naima Rauam is an artist who has followed her passion for place throughout her career. In the mid-1960s, an art school assignment led her to the Fulton Fish Market, the South Street Seaport Historic District, and the New York City waterfront. Inspired by the vitality, culture, and history she encountered, Naima has documented life in these areas with her artwork ever since, with her watercolors, oils and charcoals. Her studio was in the original 1907 Tin Building when it was part of the Fulton Fish Market on South Street until 2005. In 1999, the South Street Seaport Museum hosted While the City Sleeps, an exhibit of Naima’s fish market artwork. artpm.com
