I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Theater Thursday - Sugarcraft

We received complimentary tickets to Sugarcraft for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Sugarcraft

Where: 59E59 Theatres
             59 E. 59 St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

When: Through March 15. 2025

From the moment you enter the space and are given a character name and bio, you are completely immersed in the 18th-century world of Sugarcraft. However, if you don't enjoy participatory theater don't let that scare you, the participation aspect doesn't go further than that.  The show is a culinary delight and a pleasant and diverting historical play. Although, it is not strictly based on a true story, it was inspired by a historic cookbook. Julie Congress is charming in the leading role of Mrs. Mary Eales, a talented confectioner, who introduces ice cream to the court of Queen Anne. The cast also includes Erin Lamar and Steven Conroy who excel equally in several roles. Conroy is particularly amusing as Lady Dupry with her crazy oversized wig large enough to hide things in. Ariana Cruz and Lilybeth Linda Guzman round out the cast alternating in the role of Mary's sweet young daughter.

The show is quite cleverly staged. When you enter the theater it looks like an art gallery with a selection of paintings on the wall. However, the artwork and lighting cues help keep track of specifically where we are in the story in a fun and interesting way.

Although the story can often be light and amusing, there are darker moments. As a woman living alone in Georgian times, Mary does what she must to get by, especially in one instance which makes the show unsuitable for young children.

If you are worried about a show focusing on the preparation of delicious food making you hungry, don't despair. After the show, audience members are invited to partake in a generous helping of ice cream specially prepared for the production by Ample Hills Creamery. For some, this may be the best part of the event although the show itself is quite enjoyable as well.

And that's our view. Unfortunately, the entire run of Sugarcraft is sold out. For more about the show or to find out if there is any sort of waiting or cancellation list, visit 59e59.org/shows/show-detail/sugarcraft/ or call (212) 753-5959

Tune in Saturday for Still More Theater Saturday.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Road to the Big Game: New Orleans and Celebrating the Black Heroes of Football's Greatest Game

We received complimentary tickets to the exhibits The Road to the Big Game: New Orleans and Celebrating the Black Heroes of Football's Greatest Game for review purposes, Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: The Road to the Bug Game: New Orleans
                                   and
Celebrating the Black Heroes of Football's Greatest Game

Where: The Paley Museum
              25 W. 52nd St.
              New York, NY

Who: All ages

When: Through March 30, 2025

If you're sad because the football season's over,  and you live in or can travel to the New York area, don't despair. The Paley Center's got you covered. They have two sensational current exhibits that let you bask in the Super Bowl's crowning glories and celebrate some of its greatest heroes. These extensive exhibits spill over with numerous timelines, videos, pictures, memorabilia, and more. Signed helmets, footballs, and Jerseys; game day photos; and a Super Bowl trophy are only a small sampling of what you can view at this extremely comprehensive exhibit.

If you're more a fan of the half-time show than the game itself, this exhibit is for you too. It fully traces this fun game intermission tradition from its humble beginnings when the entertainers were arbitrary bands to the current extravaganzas packed with the most popular performers. Additionally, plenty of videos, objects, and pictures related to this cherished tradition are available to watch and/or view. The exhibit even covers Super Bowl commercials.

If you're a super fan of the Super Bowl, you will really love this exciting exhibit. Even if you're just a casual fan, you'll still find plenty to enjoy here. Either way, you're not going to want to miss it!

And that's our view. For more about The Road to the Big Game: New Orleans and Celebrating the Black Heroes of Football's Greatest Game or to purchase tickets to visit these exhibits go to  www.paleycenter.org

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Promise Me Sunshine & Interrupted Lives: Nine Stories of Child Survivors of the Holocaust; Movie: Altered Reality

We may have been given complimentary copies and/or access for review purposes to any books, products, and/or any other visual or audio media mentioned below. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

Books: Promise Me Sunshine & Interrupted Lives

Me- Promise Me Sunshine was such a great book!

It follows. a woman named Lenny who is grieving the recent loss of her best friend. When she takes a job nannying for a young girl named Ainsley, she meets Ainsley's uncle, Miles, who has been through grief of his own. He steps in to help Lenny complete a list of activities to help her live again.

I really liked both Lenny and Miles. Lenny was funny enough to make me laugh out loud several times, and Miles was incredibly thoughtful. The romance between these two was so beautiful. I loved watching them build a foundation of strong friendship before slowly falling in love with each other. They communicated honestly throughout the book, went out of their way to be there for each other, and had really fun banter too. If you like Luke and Lorelai as a couple in Gilmore Girls,  you'd love this couple as they have a similar dynamic of an upbeat quirky woman with a more stoic, slightly exasperated man.

Aside from the romance, there was an interesting side plot involving Miles trying to become closer to Ainsley and her mother (his sister). This storyline definitely took a backseat to the romance and grief and therefore, it was a little lackluster in comparison. It was resolved nicely but it would have been more satisfying if they'd spent more time working towards it.

This book was more serious than a regular rom-com since it dealt heavily with grief, but it was handled realistically and emotionally without bringing down the book's mood overall.

There's something about Cara Bastone's writing that's so addictive. The pacing of both the romance and the plot was perfect and kept me flying through the pages, much like I did with her last release, Ready or Not. If you're looking for a romance with a strong female lead, a sweet and kind love interest, a slow-burning romance, and a heartwarming story, I would highly recommend this book!

Mom - Today I recommend Interrupted Lives by Amanda Friedeman and Kelley Szany. This book tells the stories of several people who were children during the Holocaust but managed to survive the war despite their Jewish heritage. Some were taken in by non-Jews; others survived concentration camps. All had courage and they persevered. They also had families who cared enough about them to make extreme sacrifices to save their lives.

Although the mere idea of what these children had to survive is upsetting, and the book does delve into their wartime experiences it doesn't really dig into these things as deeply and disturbingly as it could. Thus, the book is suitable for tweens and teens, and it is, in fact, meant for them. It does, however, talk about the deaths of the children's relatives. This, among other things, makes it unsuitable for younger children,

Each individual chapter of the book is about a different person. In addition to recounting their experience during the war and how they survived, each section also includes the person's guiding philosophy of life. This seems kind of trite in light of what they have survived. However, despite this, overall, the book is still a worthwhile and inspirational read. It puts into perspective how some of the things we complain about in our daily lives today are so trivial compared to what some people have had to survive.

Movie: Altered Reality

Today we are recommending Altered Reality. This fairly fast-paced film is about a family whose lives are being destroyed by a woman who insinuates her way into their lives. At first, the story seems fairly cliched, but it takes some surprising twists and turns along the way.

It also has to do with time travel, but that doesn't come in until fairly late in the movie, although it plays a big part in the story's resolution. Some parts of the story don't necessarily completely make sense but mostly it's an exciting thriller that will keep your attention throughout.

Altered Reality is available on DVD or digitally for purchase or rental now.

More Theater Monday - Make Believe

We received complimentary tickets to Make Believe for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Make Believe

Where: NJ Rep
             179 Broadway
             Long Branch, NJ

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up Due to Subject Matter

When: Through March 9, 2025

Make Believe is the story of a gay Hollywood actor forced to participate in a ruse to make it seem like he is having an affair with a married woman because if his true sexual preference were revealed, it would ruin his career. Although the story is set in the 1930s, it is extremely relevant today when homophobia and other prejudices are running rampant again in some quarters.

Quentin Chisholm is the actor, Bailey Hunter. His portrayal imbues the character with sweetness and naivety. This contrasts nicely with Eilis Cahill's portrayal of Eleanor, the world-weary prostitute who has been hired to play his paramour. Her bubbly personality belies her inner toughness and touch of vulnerability. Cahill is quite poignant in the role. Although both performers are good, she is clearly the standout in this two-hander.

And that's our view. For more about Make Believe or to purchase, tickets, visit njrep.org/show/make-believe

In Person – Sat, Mar 8, 7:30 pm, from $40 / $15 student

Online – Sun, Mar 9, 12 pm – Tue, Mar 11, 12 pm, $20

Kaufmann Concert Hall

A landmark evening in dance history, this extraordinary performance brings together two influential companies, each rooted in deep cultural traditions and celebrated for their transformative artistry, whose roots are entwined with the Harkness Dance Center.

Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE: Ronald K. Brown and his company EVIDENCE return to The 92nd Street Y with Upside Down, a work that blends African diasporic rhythms with contemporary dance. Originally created in 1998 in collaboration with Rokiya Kone and her Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire, the piece is driven by the vibrant music of Nigerian singer Wunmi, accompanied by both traditional and modern instruments.

Upside Down highlights family lineages that reach from the past into the future. Its early sections channel communal grief — moving seamlessly from introspective gestures to full-bodied group sequences. The 92nd Street Y holds special meaning for Brown: it was here that the legendary Judith Jamison first witnessed his rehearsals and asked him to create a work for the Ailey organization. Now, more than two decades later, Upside Down returns to the place where its journey began, a testament to Brown’s enduring vision and creative roots.

PHILADANCO!: In their 92NY debut, Philadelphia’s renowned PHILADANCO! brings a stunning performance of Talley Beatty’s Pretty Is Skin Deep, Ugly Is to the Bone. Beatty, a pioneering figure in American modern dance, first graced our stage in 1937 with Katherine Dunham and later collaborated with Alvin Ailey, shaping the future of dance right here. Now, nearly 60 years since the piece was last performed at 92NY, it returns as a testament to Beatty’s enduring legacy. With its vibrant blend of innovation and tradition, PHILADANCO!’s precision, passion, and performance promise a “stunner” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). Celebrated for their dynamic dancers and their elevation of African American dance traditions, PHILADANCO!’s performance is an unforgettable celebration of the past, present, and future of American dance.

21) The CUNY Dance Initiative

presents

Jon Lehrer Dance Company

Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 7:30pm

The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), an expansive program providing New York City choreographers and dance companies with creative residencies on CUNY campuses, announces Jon Lehrer Dance Company on March 8, 2025 at 7:30pm at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, 199 Chambers Street, New York, NY, 10007. General admission tickets are $40 and student tickets are $30. Tickets can be purchased online at https://tribecapac.org/event/jon-lehrer-dance-company/ or by calling (212) 220-1460.

Jon Lehrer Dance Company (JLDC), led by Queens-native Jon Lehrer, will present an evening of world-renowned repertory, including the world premiere of Foster, and the NYC premiere of Volt.

JLDC began in 2007 in Buffalo, NY and Jon moved the company to his hometown of NYC in 2019. Under Jon Lehrer’s artistic direction, the company showcases his unique choreography and definitive style. His extensive background in both modern and jazz dance idioms fosters choreography that is organic, athletic, artistic, and often humorous, with themes rooted in human experiences.

Program Details

Foster (World Premiere): In 2016, Jon’s younger brother, Michael Foster Lehrer, developed ALS - a degenerative disease that causes the progressive loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. Michael passed away on January 17, 2023. Foster is a window into those six difficult years, as Jon watched his brother slowly yet too quickly succumb to this horrible disease.

Volt (NYC Premiere): Set to five high-octane percussive songs, this new work brings the company’s signature blend of artistry, athleticism, and entertainment to a new level.

mingos! (2023): A raucous and wild comedic romp set in a classic Las Vegas revue, where a Flamboyance of Flamingos are transformed into an Ostentation of Peacocks!

La Follia (2022): The madness and musicality of Vivaldi combined with the physical and athletic ingenuity of the dancers.

Here In This Eden (2013): Breathtaking and beautiful, this duet depicts two individuals who are completely lost in their love for each other.

Almost divine, Here In This Eden was a wonderfully harmonious and dreamy

pas de deux with great charisma.” - Onetz - Amberg, Germany

A Ritual Dynamic (2007): The company’s very first piece, which laid out its signature aesthetic.

"Surprise landings and tableaux that sliced space into unexpected geometrics kept the

audience on the edge of their seats.” - Dance Magazine

Bridge and Tunnel (2001)

Jon’s playful and joyous homage to growing up in Queens, NY - specifically his high school years in Flushing. Originally created on Giordano Dance Chicago, this celebratory work is set to the music of Paul Simon (another Queens native).

LAB: STRIPPED

LAByrinth Theater Company presents LAB: STRIPPED, two week runs of staged works in progress. More than a reading, but not quite a production, STRIPPED keeps the focus on the script with minimal technical elements.

March 7 - 16

STRIPPED: House of Blue Robes

By Seth Zvi Rosenfeld

Directed by Brian Roff

Hell’s Kitchen, 1985. Roommates Ralph Ramirez, an actor, and Schlomo D., an aspiring rapper, are struggling to break through as artists. Ralph is torn between his love for Marisol and his father’s old-world ideas, while Schlomo’s own tortuous relationship with girlfriend Maylin Chang has brought his life to a standstill. When Ralph meets Florence, a transplant from Naples, their connection sets a series of events in motion, to devastating effect for all.

House of Blue Robes is a complex and very funny journey of identity, friendship, love, and fidelity.

March 21 - 30

STRIPPED: Recurring

By Madeline Barr

Directed by John Gould Rubin

Recurring is a gripping, cinematically vivid drama that graphically unveils how a deep and

horrific history insinuates itself into a woman’s present and future. Through fragmented

memories propelled by sharp suspense, acid humor, and a gripping magical realism, we’re spun

through a dizzying array of events—from adulthood to girlhood, back and forth—culminating in a

visceral confrontation with the horrifying truth of what she endured.
