What: Sonya Clark We Are Other
Where: Museum of Arts and Design
2 Columbus Circle
New York, NY
Who: All ages
When: Through September 22, 2024
Sonya Clark's artwork makes us think about things in different ways. Seemingly common objects are more than just what they appear on the surface. Several of her projects are on display in the current exhibition, Sonya Clark We Are Each Other, at the Museum of Arts and Design.
Artworks in the exhibit include The Beaded Prayer Project; Edifice and Mortar; Monumental Cloth; The Hair Craft Project, and more. The Beaded Prayer Project is about the connection between beads and prayer and how their use provides a sense of protection. Both Edifice and Mortar and Monumental Cloth deal with the legacy of slavery and the hard work involved with creating true racial equality. The Hair Craft Project deals with hairstyles as art and a way of communicating.
The exhibit also includes interactive elements meant to enhance our experience. They allow us to interact with the objects in ways that make us see their deeper meaning. On the whole, the exhibit is quite thoughtful and provocative.
And that's our view. For more about Sonya Clark's We Are Each Other exhibit, or about the Museum of Arts and Design in general or to purchase a ticket to the museum online visit, madmuseum.org/exhibition/sonya-clark.
Tune in tomorrow for Theater Thursday.
