When Star Stone was chosen for an online reality series, she thought it would be her big break. Unfortunately, instead, it was her nightmare. Villian Era is her one-woman show about her experience.
Star was selected as a contestant for the online show, Odd Man Out, similar to the TV series, The Mole. 6 vegans were vying to figure out the secret mean eater among them. The winner of the game would win cash, and the rest would get nothing. Star really wanted to win and played hard. Thus, she was painted as the villain because somehow, these reality shows always have to have a villain. Even though it was only a game people took it much too seriously, as they unfortunately usually do, and afterward she received slews of hateful comments and that was only the beginning.
This show is a real eye-opener regarding how seriously people take these reality shows and how despicably they react disregarding the fact that they are dangerously playing with real people's lives. This includes both those who create these shows and those who watch them. Star's story is heartbreaking. You can't hear it and not be affected. It tells us a lot about the world we live in today. Although Star ultimately realized that what other people think about her isn't her problem, this was after she had already made it her problem by changing everything about herself even her name.
And that's our view. Villian Era will next run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For more information visit https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/villain-era
