I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Books: Lenny Gets Away With Murder & The Summer Pact

Today we are recommending Lenny Marks Gets Away With Murder by Kerry Mayne. Lenny is a socially awkward loner whose only friends are imaginary although she has a plan to make actual friends. She also may or may not have killed her abusive stepfather.

This is an extremely unique and affecting novel. Lenny is a quirky but loveable outsider who is extremely relatable to anyone who has ever struggled to fit in. The story is alternatingly heartbreaking and heartwarming. Ultimate, however, it is hopeful and uplifting. It is a story about finding one's people and connecting rather than one about disconnection.

Today we are recommending The Summer Pact by Emily Giffin. Hannah, Tyson, Lainey, and Summer come from completely different worlds, but when they meet in college they immediately hit it off and form a deep bond. On the brink of graduation, a tragedy occurs, and they make a pact to always be there for each other no matter what. When Hannah learns of her fiancee's betrayal that vow is tested, but she is not the only one whose life is at a crossroads.

This is a very engaging novel about friendship. Even though the characters in the story are not perfect, they and the depth of their friendship sometimes seem too good to be true. However, Giffin's skill at crafting these characters, the situations they find themselves in, and the dialogue makes the story so believable that we can't help getting invested. We can only wish that we had friends as true as these.

Today we are recommending True Detective Night Country. In this fourth installment of the anthology series, unresolved issues due to their work on a prior case and more cause a pair of detectives to clash while handling the investigation of a group of scientists found frozen in the snow, which may be related to an earlier unsolved murder.

Although this series starts slow, it is unique and unpredictable and quickly becomes quite intriguing. Jodie Foster, as the tough-as-nails veteran stoically hiding a big secret, is in fine form. We are easily reminded of why she is the winner of not one but two Academy Awards. Her big meltdown is gutwrenching. Virtual newcomer, Kali Reis matches her toe to toe. The plot which deals with Indigenous people, big companies, and pollution is extremely timely. The ending is somewhat confusing, and also a bit unsatisfying. However, on the whole, the series is still worth viewing.

True Detective Night Country is available for purchase on DVD or Blu Ray today in addition to its availability for purchase or rental digitally and on HBO.

And that's our view. Tune in tomorrow for Where-To-Go Wednesday.
