If you want to totally immerse yourself in everything Broadway right down to your hotel stay, you couldn't make a better choice than the Civilian. This hotel which opened in 2021 is meant to be a space for theater and the community to come together.  The David Rockwell Group, a firm best known for their theatrical designs, created the concept but, numerous other theater professionals contributed to the design and decor as well. The  hotel contains both a permanent and rotating collection of theater memorabilia and more.

There are numerous pictures throughout the space. They include photos from various productions, Broadway opening  photos, a series of photos of Broadway Theaters taken during the pandemic, and more. Other artwork includes self portraints created by multihyphenate, Tommy Tune, a wall dedicated to the musical Company,  41 sketches of current theaters by top designers, and a rotating display of theatrical set models. 

The bars and restaurants have a theatrical theme as well. The bar is meant to be like a stagedoor canteen where people can come and relax after a show. The rooftop garden, which is actually called The Secret Garden, is reminscent of the roof gardens that were a staple of old theaters. It is popular space for hosting opening and closing night parties. 

The hallways of each floor have a different custom wallpaper. The wallpapers were made from designs for costume sketches from different shows. The elevators have custom wallpaper as well, however, the wallpaper there is actually made up of custom design sketches from different shows.

The theater theme is even carried through to the guest rooms.They are meant to resemble dressing rooms. Each room contains a piece of theatrical art as well.  It might be a costume sketch, or an architechtural drawing, or something else.

The highlight of the hotel is the Blue Room. This room is full of theater memorabilia. Currently, the collection includes one of Lola's Kinky Boots, a Phantom of the Opera mask, costumes sketches from & Juliet and so much more. It is the only permanent location in the City aside from the Museum of Broadway where you can always go and see theater memorabilia.

You don't have to be a guest of hotel to visit the Blue Room, one of the hotel's bars or the restaurant. However, if you need a place to stay in the Broadway area, and you are a theater fan, you are definitely going to want to check out the Civlian.
