Me - If you are familiar with the film, Some Like it Hot, you may remember that there are some cringe-worthy elements to the story that definitely would not be acceptable today. The new musical based on the film has thankfully been rewritten to address, eliminate or reimagine these elements in a different way thus making the story newer, fresher, and much more palatable to today's audiences. One of the major changes is in the character of Jerry/Daphne who now has much more substance to his character and goes on a journey of discovering himself which is relatable for so many audience members. J. Harrison Ghee does an amazing job with the role.
The character of Joe/Josephine has been toned down and given more empathy. He may not start out that way, but he ends up there. Christian Borle does a terrific job in this role as well. In fact, the cast, on the whole, is great with a shoutout to Angie Schworer who is extremely funny in a quite amusing role.
The story is fun. The songs are good. They may not necessarily stick in your mind but they are nice to listen to, and you may want to hear some of them again, especially the effervescent title number. The dancing take classic show musical dancing and makes it fresh and lively. A tap dance duet featuring Ghee and Borle is particularly good. All in all, the show is the perfect example of an old-timey musical with just enough modern touches to make it new, exciting, and updated for today's audiences.
