Virtual - RSVPs are mandatory, at BAM.org

Best known for his avant-garde meta-documentary Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, William Greaves (1926—2014) was also the director of over 100 documentary films, the majority focused on African American history, politics, and culture. Nationtime is a report on the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, a historic event that gathered black voices from across the political spectrum, among them Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, Charles Diggs, and H. Carl McCall. Narrated by Sidney Poitier, the film was considered too militant for television broadcast at the time and has since circulated only in an edited 60-minute version. This new 4K restoration from IndieCollect, with funding from Jane Fonda and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, returns the film to its original length and visual quality. FLAP MY WINGS:
SONGS FROM WE LIVE IN CAIRO
FULL ALBUM TO BE RELEASED JANUARY 25, 2021
ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE
TAHRIR SQUARE PROTESTS
THAT BEGAN THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION
Brothers, songwriters, and collaborators Daniel and Patrick Lazour have today released the second single from their forthcoming independently-produced album Flap My Wings: Songs from We Live in Cairo, featuring songs from their musical, the Richard Rodgers Award-winning We Live in Cairo, seen in the Spring of 2019 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The album will be released on January 25, 2021, the tenth anniversary of the Tahrir Square protests that began the Egyptian Revolution in 2011.
Virtually gathering an extraordinary group of artists from across the globe during the current coronavirus pandemic, the remotely recorded album features artists from the cast of the musical as well as major Arab activist-songwriters, including Ramy Essam, Emel Mathlouthi, Rotana, Hadi Eldebeck, Hamed Sinno, Naseem Alatrash, and the brothers themselves.
ABOUT “WE LIVE IN CAIRO”
Inspired by the young Egyptians who took to the streets in 2011 to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak, We Live in Cairo follows six revolutionary students armed with laptops and cameras, guitars and spray cans as they come of age in contemporary Cairo. We Live in Cairo moves from the jubilation of Tahrir Square through the tumultuous years that followed. As escalating division and violence lead to a military crackdown, the revolutionaries of Tahrir must confront the question of how—or even whether—to keep their dreams of change alive.

A TWO-PART SERIES
AVAILABLE ONLINE JANUARY 25 – FEBRUARY 7, 2021
Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Producing Director) launches its 44th Milestone Season with the virtual revival presentation of the film noir infused thriller Film Chinois, a re-envisioned radio play adaptation written by Damon Chua (The Emperors Nightingale). Director Kaipo Schwab reunites the five-member 2015 Pan Asian cast that will feature Rosanne Ma as China Doll with Jean Brassard as The Ambassador, Dinh James Doan as The Man, Katie Lee Hill as Simone, Benjamin Jones as Randolph. "Pan Asian Rep enters a brave new world to re-imagine theater with the audio version of Film Chinois as radio play about a time of cat and mouse global tensions where the individual is but a pawn,” stated Tisa Chang, founding Pan Asian Repertory Theatre Artistic Director.
Film Chinois will premiere in two-parts beginning Monday, January 25, 2021 and will be available to view through Sunday, February 7, 2021. Tickets are priced at $20. For reservations, please visit https://panasian-filmchinois.
Film Chinois is a film noir infused thriller of spy-versus-spy intrigue and dangerous romantic liaisons in the vein of Hollywood's classic films such as The Maltese Falcon. Re-envisioned as a radio play, the thriller takes us back to 1947 Peking, an uneasy time between WWII and the imminent Communist takeover two years later. The story centers around China Doll, a Maoist femme fatale, and Randolph, a fresh-faced American operative on a secret mission, and a mysterious man. Further complicating matters is the Ambassador who seems to know Peking all too well and his current flame, Simone, a songstress with something up her sleeve. As Randolph plunges deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness, he finds his life imperiled, as he begins to unravel the mystery of a piece of old homemade film.
