I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Film: Nationtime (1972), directed by William Greaves

Special introduction by Rukia Lumumba

Monday, January 18, 2021

Virtual - RSVPs are mandatory, at BAM.org

Tickets are limited

Best known for his avant-garde meta-documentary SymbiopsychotaxiplasmWilliam Greaves (1926—2014) was also the director of over 100 documentary films, the majority focused on African American history, politics, and culture. Nationtime is a report on the National Black Political Convention held in Gary, Indiana, in 1972, a historic event that gathered black voices from across the political spectrum, among them Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Coretta Scott King, Richard Hatcher, Amiri Baraka, Charles Diggs, and H. Carl McCall. Narrated by Sidney Poitier, the film was considered too militant for television broadcast at the time and has since circulated only in an edited 60-minute version. This new 4K restoration from IndieCollect, with funding from Jane Fonda and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, returns the film to its original length and visual quality. Courtesy of Kino Lorber. (80min)

Rukia Lumumba, Co-Founder and Executive Director of People's Advocacy Institute will give a special introduction, reflecting on the legacy of the 1972 National Black Political Convention and her work as the co-producer of the 2020 Black National Convention. FLAP MY WINGS:

SONGS FROM WE LIVE IN CAIRO

FULL ALBUM TO BE RELEASED JANUARY 25, 2021

ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE

TAHRIR SQUARE PROTESTS

THAT BEGAN THE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION

Brothers, songwriters, and collaborators Daniel and Patrick Lazour have today released the second single from their forthcoming independently-produced album Flap My Wings: Songs from We Live in Cairo, featuring songs from their musical, the Richard Rodgers Award-winning We Live in Cairo, seen in the Spring of 2019 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The album will be released on January 25, 2021, the tenth anniversary of the Tahrir Square protests that began the Egyptian Revolution in 2011.

Virtually gathering an extraordinary group of artists from across the globe during the current coronavirus pandemic, the remotely recorded album features artists from the cast of the musical as well as major Arab activist-songwriters, including Ramy Essam, Emel Mathlouthi, Rotana, Hadi Eldebeck, Hamed Sinno, Naseem Alatrash, and the brothers themselves.

ABOUT “WE LIVE IN CAIRO”

Inspired by the young Egyptians who took to the streets in 2011 to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak, We Live in Cairo follows six revolutionary students armed with laptops and cameras, guitars and spray cans as they come of age in contemporary Cairo. We Live in Cairo moves from the jubilation of Tahrir Square through the tumultuous years that followed. As escalating division and violence lead to a military crackdown, the revolutionaries of Tahrir must confront the question of how—or even whether—to keep their dreams of change alive.

The story centers around China Doll, a Maoist femme fatale, and Randolph, a fresh-faced American operative on a secret mission, and a mysterious man. Further complicating matters is the Ambassador who seems to know Peking all too well and his current flame, Simone, a songstress with something up her sleeve. As Randolph plunges deeper and deeper into the heart of darkness, he finds his life imperiled, as he begins to unravel the mystery of a piece of old homemade film.

Created by the "masterfully hilarious” Story Pirates, “some of the best creators and performers in kids’ media today” (Sirius XM), SLEEP SQUAD is more than an on-demand evening of entertainment; it’s a one-of-a-kind experience that leaps off the screen to create performance-like, immersive family fun right at home.

14) Works & Process at the Guggenheim
presents the premiere of
Isolation to Creation Docuseries
Airing on WNET's ALL ARTS
Wednesdays, Jan. 27, and Feb. 3, 10, and 17, 2021 at 8pm

This past Summer and Fall amidst widespread cancellations, Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, itself facing a shuttered theater, forged a path for artists to safely gather, create and perform together again. Pioneering and producing bubble residencies that have since been widely duplicated, over fifty artists entered eight Works & Process bubble residencies in rural Hudson Valley after an unprecedented period of isolation. To capture this journey, Works & Process produced a four-part docuseries Isolation to Creationby filmmaker Nic Petry of Dancing Camera, to provide audiences with the rare opportunity to go into the bubbles and behind the scenes to experience the hope, joy, exhilarating physical struggle, and emotional challenges experienced by performers returning to the studio and stage.

The series will stream nationwide on January 27, and February 3, 10, and 17, at 8pm ET, for free on the ALL ARTS appallarts.org, and also air in the New York metro area on the ALL ARTS TV channel (channel lineups available here).
