Tony Award-winning actress Harriet Harris (Broadway’s Thoroughly Modern Millie and Cinderella; Frasier; Desperate Housewives) will star as real-world Senator Margaret Chase Smith opposite Lee Sellars (Netflix’s House of Cards and Luke Cage) as Senator Joseph McCarthy in the world-premiere of Tony-Award winner Joe Pietro’s new play Conscience at George Street Playhouse. 

On June 1, 1950, Senator Margaret Chase Smith stood on the Senate floor and delivered her “Declaration of Conscience '' in a historic moment of political courage. FRIGID Festival presents A Southern Fairytale, the story of a gay Christian growing up on the Deep South, written and performed by Ty Autry and directed by David L. Carson. Five performances will be staged at The Kraine Theater, 84 East 4^th Street in New York City from Through-March 6, 2020. 

Based on true events, A Southern Fairytale artfully illuminates the challenges facing a young, gay Christian growing up in the Deep South. As we accompany the protagonist through multiple journeys into and out of the closet, the audience emotionally connects with the very real impacts of conversion therapy, excommunication, and a father who believes that a demon has possessed his son.

The critically acclaimed, smash hit musical EMOJILAND The Musical, will begin its final three weeks of performances today, ending its limited engagement Off-Broadway run at The Duke on 42nd Street on Thursday, March 19, 2020.

Not to be confused with, and very much unlike The Emoji Movie, Emojiland is an electric ensemble piece about a diverse community of archetypes who take one another at face value: a smiling face dealing with depression; a princess who doesn’t want a prince; a skull dying for deletion; a nerd face too smart for his own good; a face with sunglasses who can’t see past his own reflection; and a police officer and construction worker who just want to work together. When a software update threatens to destroy life as they know it, Emojiland faces the most fundamental questions a society – and a heart – can face: Who are we? And who matters?

OK Meatplace is a six-person sketch comedy group based out of New York City known for their whimsical, darkly absurd humor with a dusting of butt jokes. The members of OK Meatplace trained at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade before entering the New York Indie sketch scene. They have been featured performers at NYC’s PIT SketchFest for the last three years, the PIT Loft, PATV’s The Brick Wall, and The Wild Project’s Theatre Throwdown. OK Meatplace is completely unaffiliated with the O.K. Meatplace Deli in Flatbush, just stole their weird name. The Deli has yet to bring it up.

The Brobot Adventure: Wrath of the Wackness follows the alien Hip Hop android Flobot Owens, legendary Brobot MC, as he “abducts” an audience of humans from Earth for a Sci Fi Hip Hop dance party to eradicate the wacknesss that’s slowly plaguing his planet. The piece includes intricate live looping that combines verses with beatboxing, vocal melodies, and sound effects while mixing socially conscious lyrics in the genres of Hip Hop, Afrofuturism, and Afrobeat.

Veteran Voices calls upon the traditions of past warrior cultures such as the Greeks, Romans, and Native Americans, who welcomed their military home in rituals of storytelling. Reviving these practices, military veteran artists take the stage to share their stories and experiences in a way that is both healing and informs others, sharing the moral burden of war. Following the showcase, there will be a post-show discussion on the movement to support existing and new programming in New York which highlights veteran voices.

Artists will present short devised pieces set to live music in an environment that supports and enhances collaboration as well as the lyrical possibilities of spoken word and body.

An array of splendid artists—pianist Jeremy Denk, soprano Karina Gauvin, mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, tenor Andrew Haji, bass-baritone Matthew Brook, and La Chapelle de Québec, one of North America’s premiere vocal ensembles—join OSL for this all–Beethoven program of some of his well– and lesser–known choral works. The program opens with the Leonore Overture No. 2, one of three overtures of the same name Beethoven wrote for his only opera, Fidelio, which was originally going to be called Leonore, reflecting the name of its protagonist. Ten years in the making, with numerous rewrites, Fidelio was, by Beethoven’s own admission, the most difficult of his works to complete. Meeresstille und glückliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), Op. 112, a cantata for chorus and orchestra, is performed in a single movement. It premiered in Vienna in 1815 and is based on a pair of Goethe’s poems about a sea voyage. The Choral Fantasy begins as an improvisatory piano solo, performed here by Jeremy Denk, introducing a set of variations, and then culminates in a rousing finale for solo singers, chorus, piano, and orchestra.

The concert ends with the Mass in C Major. Young Beethoven received a commission in 1807 to compose a Mass in honor of the name day of Maria Josepha Hermenegild, wife of Prince Nicholas Esterhazy II. This continued a tradition that had been the responsibility of Joseph Haydn, the family’s music director for many years.

The panel will include directors Pamela Hunt, Michael Montel, and Stuart Ross, actor Simon Jones, music directors Eric Svejcar and David Hancock Turner, York’s Producing Artistic Director James Morgan, historian Charles Wright, and more to be announced. Moderating will be York’s Executive Director Evans Haile. This special evening promises to be entertaining and insightful, filled with stories and anecdotes about the productions, stars, and creative artists who have made The York truly a place where “Musicals Come to Life” A reception with light snacks and beverages will will follow the discussion for all ticket-holders.
