The Roger Rees Awards 2019

We were given free tickets to the Roger Rees Awards for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed  here are our own.

Me & Mom - The Roger Rees Awards for Musical Theater Excellence are New York area musical theater awards for high school students. The winners of these awards represent the area in the Jimmy Awards which are the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Last year's male Roger Rees Award winner, Andrew Barth Feldman, went on to win the Jimmy Award and is currently starring as Evan in the Tony winning musical, Dear Evan Hansen. This year we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the Roger Rees awards. The awards were hosted by Frank Dilella, the host of NY1's On Stage and Marla Louissant, a 2015 Roger Rees Award winner and Jimmy award winner who recently completed a run in the national tour of Beautiful. After an opening number by all 50 nominees, the field was whittled down to a select number of finalists. Each finalist performed a number from the show which got them their nomination. The talent on display was amazing! Every number was incredible! The selections included songs from Fiddler on the Roof, Caroline or Change, Aida, Chicago, A Bronx Tale and more. The winners were Jeremy Fuentes for his performance of Calgero in A Bronx Tale and Ekele Ukebu for her performance as Aida in the musical of the same name. We hope to have the opportunity to see these two perfomers compete in the Jimmy Awards next month, and we hope to have the opportunity to see all of these talented performers on other stages in the future.
