Pigeonholed Theater Company

Offers Children's After-School Acting Classes This Fall in DUMBO

Pigeonholed, a nonprofit New York City-based theater company, announces the Fall 2018 Children’s Class Schedule, with classes in improvisation and story building, and scene study and acting technique.  All classes are taught by professional actors and Interlochen Center for the Arts faculty and feature workshops with Broadway actors.

Classes will be held at Chaos Studios at 247 Water Street, Suite 202 in DUMBO, Brooklyn.

Pigeonholed’s belief is that children learn and grow from doing. These classes were created from Pigeonholed founders, Justin Cimino and Sasha Lazare’s own professional experience as actors as well as their extensive experience as educators. They believe that combination is essential in creating an environment where students are challenged to mature as independent thinkers and to trust their individual creative instincts. Equally critical to their curriculum, over the course of the program students will also participate in a highly diverse set of group activities, which will be aimed at fostering a spirit of teamwork amongst all the participants. By the end of the program students can be both more self-assured and comfortable in front of a crowd, more intuitive and empathetic as artists, and will better understand how to channel their own creative impulses into productive work that the world needs to see. Creating Your Own Character

This age range encompasses children at their most spectacularly imaginative.  In this class, we encourage the students to use that imagination to create a world and character(s) all of their own. They will learn theatre games, improvisation, listening and communication skills, as well as how to devise an original play. Through acting and play, kids will learn valuable life skills, practice listening, build confidence, make new friends, and find a creative outlet for energy. Throughout the session, they will develop and build upon a fully formed character and story, which will culminate in an invited rehearsal where they will present their original, short play. Students of all levels of experience are welcome!

Acting Technique and Scene Study
Wednesdays 4:45 - 5:45 PM
Ages 10-14

This class focuses both on improvisation and scene study with a focus on various acting techniques. Students of all levels of experience are welcome! At this age, students are able to develop a physical and emotional connection to characters and scenarios presented to them. The first half of the session will focus on theatre games, improvisation, clowning, and devising their own work, with the second half focusing on close scene study, audition preparation, and Shakespeare. By the end of the session the students will have created and written their own work as well as memorized and staged scenes from classic plays assigned by the instructors. Performance techniques taught will include Meisner, movement, and voice/speech, which will all be incorporated into their final presentation. Parents will be welcome to attend an invited rehearsal on the last day of classes.

Spring session starts Wednesday, September 12 and runs until November 14. Registration ends September 10.
 

Under their new education wing, they will also be offering adult Clowning classes on Sundays from  10:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 6:00 to 9:00 PM beginning October 7.

Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties begins previews at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street) on Thursday, August 16, 2018, with an official opening night set for Wednesday, September 12, 2018.

Meet five different women named Betty: one rich, one lonely, one charismatic, one lovelorn, and one who keeps working on her truck. Oh, and one has decided to stage a production of that play-within-a-play by… that old English guy, what's his name? Ah, forget it. In Jen Silverman’s unpredictable comedy Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties, five women collide at the intersection of rage, love, and the “thea-tah,” provoking each other to take a look in the mirror and face the person they didn’t know they could be. Directed by Mike Donahue (The Legend of Georgia McBride), this New York premiere invites us all to be a little braver, live a little louder, laugh a little harder, and unleash our inner Betty.

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre presents Green Afternoon VI, an annual interactive garden installation and performance at the home of architects Marcia Previti and Peter Gumpel in East Hampton, NY on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 5pm-7pm.

The evening begins at 5 pm with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and several outdoor sitting rooms featuring performance installations, with performers dancing in tree houses, on outdoor sculptures, in and around the swimming pool, in the woods, and more. After the moving installations, at 5:50 p.m., the audience will move to the lawn for a seated performance of Selwyn's developing work Crossroads. Green Afternoon VI takes place at 230 Old Stone Hwy, East Hampton, NY 11937. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at www.amandaselwyndance.org.

Crossroads is a new work in development by Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre scheduled to premiere in June 2019. The piece explores forging into unchartered waters and that tumultuous process of self-discovery. BROOKLYN OPERA WORKS (BOW) at the Brooklyn Music School (BMS)We strive to create BOW as a place of both excellence and inclusiveness. 

Now in its sixth year, Brooklyn Opera Works (BOW), founded in 2013 by Artistic Director Lina Tetriani, proudly features emerging stars in opera, theater, and dance. During its Summer Vocal Arts program, BOW hosts three productions at the BMS Playhouse: a fully produced opera, an original work of music, theater and dance for children, and the annual A Brooklyn Cabaret. BOW is dedicated to making opera into a living art form that challenges and engages diverse contemporary audiences.

In 2018 The Brooklyn Opera Works/SVA program will present John Blow's baroque masterpiece "Venus and Adonis", accompanied by a baroque chamber ensemble, award-winning composer Christopher Cerrone's one-act opera "All Wounds Bleed". As well as the annual edition of "A Brooklyn Cabaret", directed by Anthony Laciura, and children's original musical adaptation of "Venus and Adonis".

Bold and provocative, the 6th annual A Brooklyn Cabaret will feature scenes inspired by the mythological dynamic of Venus, the erotic goddess of love and Adonis, the young hunter. Included will be classic selections by Kurt Weill, Frederick Hollander, and Misha Spoliansky, as well original works by emerging cabaret composers.

Mr. Anthony Laciura will direct this over the top showcase featuring impassioned performances by BOW artists. Laciura is a highly acclaimed director, actor and operatic tenor and has appeared on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera over 800 times, and more recently has won praise for his role as Eddie Kessler in Martin Scorsese's Boardwalk Empire.

Venus and Adonis

The groundbreaking, erotic myth of Venus and Adonis centers on the intricacies of the relationship between a sexually empowered goddess and her younger consort.

In the heart of this love story, themes of power play, manipulation and yearning are explored and exploited. Venus's reluctance to surrender, coupled with Adonis's innocence, leads to both a tragic outcome and poignant transcendence.

John Blow's reinterpretation of the myth features sensual English baroque music and scenes of love, desire and playful pageantry of cupids. Controversially categorized by some scholars as first English baroque opera, this piece inspired such legendary later works as Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.

The production is set in the court of Charles II where the aristocrats take on the epic roles, thus reenacting the story within a story. The voyeuristic aspect highlights the mortal interest in the movements of the gods. Featuring extravagant costumes of the Restoration era by Deborah Wright Houston and stage direction and choreography by Marie Zvosec, the production will showcase the talented emerging artists of Brooklyn Opera Works.

All Wounds Bleed

Composed by the Pulitzer Prize finalist Christopher Cerrone, All Wounds Bleed is a one-act chamber opera that tackles themes of individual strife as seen through the lens of the myth of Echo and Narcissus. Mr. Cerrone and Tony Asaro, who wrote the libretto, invite us into the inner world of each figure of the striking trio. Three scenes confront listeners with timely themes of isolation and emotional neglect. A contemporary take on a classic myth, All Wounds Bleed marks BOW's first foray into presenting new opera by a living composer.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) announces open submissions for 2019 TRU Voices New Musicals Reading Series. Submissions for the 2019 TRU Voices New Musicals Reading Series close August 20, 2018.

Let them pay for a developmental reading of your new musical! Created to nurture producers as well as writers, TRU VOICES seeks producer-driven projects, and also matches writers with producers. Each reading is followed by a "Dollars and Sense" panel discussion with prominent New York producers, general managers and artistic directors focusing on potential venues, marketing and budgeting of the work. According to TRU executive Director Bob Ost, "TRU welcomes a diverse range of new works, as long as they are full length (minimum of 80 minutes), and have not been performed in front of a paying audience in the New York area. We are equally interested in commercial works and the non-traditional and unconventional, and we have a special interest in finding works with multi-cultural significance."

Distant Thunder: A Native-American Musical, book by Lynne and Shaun Taylor-Corbett, music and lyrics by Chris Wiseman and Shaun Taylor-Corbett, additional music and lyrics by Robert Lindsey-Nassif, directed by Lynne Taylor-Corbett. A young man, half-Native, half white, returns to the Blackfeet Tribe to fulfill a promise he made to his mother on her death bed and unwitting opens a deep rift that threatens to destroy the tribal lands and their culture.

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre (Tisa Chang, Founding Artistic Producing Director), breaking new ground through a new educational initiative, launches its 42^nd Season with the New York premiere of the play The Emperor’s Nightingale, by Damon Chua (November 26 – December 16, 2018) and, with a prestigious grant and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the World premiere of the new play The Brothers Paranormal by Prince Gomolvilas (April 27 – May 19, 2019) both to be presented at Theatre Row (410 West 42^nd Street).  The season will also include the staged reading series Two Faces of Chinese America, and the 2018 Golden Unicorn Gala set for Thursday, October 18, 2018.

The Pan Asian Repertory Theatre 2018-2019 season launches with two new plays as part of the staged reading series Two Faces of Chinese America:  Citizen Wong byRichard Chang inspired by the 19^th Century activist and journalist Wong Chin Foo and his fight against the “Chines Exclusion Act.”  One performance only on Sunday afternoon,September 23, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Flushing Town Hall (137-35 Northern Boulevard, Flushing). 

The second reading in the series is One Day in Old Chinatown by Marcus Yi, a new musical that follows the first Asian American vaudeville performer, Frank Lee, in his first year of show business.  One performance only on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bruce Mitchell Room at A.R.T. NY (520 8^th Avenue, 3^rd Floor). 

Pan Asian Repertory Theatre will host the 2018 Golden Unicorn Gala Dinner on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at The Golden Unicorn in Chinatown (18 East Broadway at Catherine Street).  The 2018 Golden Unicorn Honorees are veteran stage & film actor, playwright and director Ernest Abuba, former Senior Program Officer for the Arts at the Doris Duke Charitable Fund Cheryl Ikemiya, and in memoriam, composer of Sayonara George Fischoff.

The 2018-2019 Mainstage season launches in November with the New York premiere of the play The Emperor’s Nightingale by Damon Chua (Incident at Hidden Temple), an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Nightingale,” set in 18^th-century China, and brings to light the youthful exploits of the future Emperor Qianlong who befriends a magical bird who helps him learn what he must do to be King. The play employs traditional Chinese lion dance, puppetry, and a pair of tigers and pandas to tell this fun, thrilling tale. A show for the whole family.  Directed by Chongren Fan (Lost in Shanghai), performances are set to begin Monday, November 26, 2018 for a limited run through Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Theatre Row (410 West 42^nd Street). Opening Night is set for Sunday afternoon, December 2, 2018 at 2:30 p.m.

The Emperor’s Nightingale will play the following performance schedule suited for all family members  --  School Matinees:  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:00 a.m.; Public Performances:  Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. & 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. 

In Spring 2019, Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, with a prestigious grant and support from the National Endowment for the Arts, will present the world premiere of the new play The Brothers Paranormal by Prince Gomolvilas (Big Hunk o’ Burnin’ Love) that follows two Thai-American brothers who specialize in domestic hauntings. When the siblings investigate the home of an African-American couple displaced by Hurricane Katrina, everyone’s notions of reality, fantasy, and sanity clash against the shocking truth. Pan Asian’s world premiere of The Brothers Paranormal is the play’s kick-off before later productions in the Midwest, Northwest, and beyond. Directed by Jeff Liu (Yellow Face), performances are set to begin Saturday, April 27, 2019 for a limited run through Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Theatre Row (410 West 42^nd Street). Opening Night is set for Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.
