Me - Today I am recommending This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith. A movie star named Graham Larkin accidentally e-mails a girl named Ellie. Then, they start e-mailing back and forth, but Ellie did know didn't know she was emailing Graham Larkin the movie star. Then, Graham comes to Ellie's hometown of Henley, Maine to film a movie. This was a cute book. I liked the characters. It was romantic. It was not predictable. I liked that about it. People who like a sweet story would enjoy this book.
Mom - Today I am recommending two sports related books.
The first book I am recommending is the fiction book, Fathers, Sons, and the Holy Ghosts of Baseball by Tommy Murray. This book is about a town that lives and dies for baseball. Holy Trinity has never won the high school baseball championship and in their last year before retirement the team's trio of elderly coaches are determined to change that. This books is not just about a team. It is about a whole town. It is a very engaging read that will draw you in particularly if you are interested in baseball. However, you don't necessarily have to love baseball to enjoy this book. If you are interested in book that paints a very vivid picture of life in a small town and the people who inhabit that town you may enjoy this book as well.
The second book I am recommending is the nonfiction book The Miracle Season by Kathy Bresnahan. Kathy Bresnahan was the coach of the girl's volleyball team at Iowa City West High School. The team won the state championship in 2010. Over the summer, their sparkplug and team leader, 17 year old Caroline (Line) Found was killed in moped accident. The book is the story of the team's 2011 season. A season in which they found inspiration in their lost friend's joie de vivre and "Live Like Line" became the rallying cry leading them in their quest to another championship. This a really beautiful touching book. It is so inspirational not only because of the way the team pulled together, but way the the school, the town and at times even neighboring towns, who were West High's rivals on the volleyball court, all really pulled together to honor Caroline's life and legacy. This book demonstrates not only the best of sports and sportmanship but the best of humanity as well. It is both heart rending and joyous. Whether you like sports or not, this book is an exhilarating read that I would really recommend.
The Miracle Season is now a major motion picture that will open this coming Friday April 6 2018. For more about that, visit www.miracleseason.movie.
