Cable Street tells the little-known true story of the Battle of Cable. This incident took place in the East End of London in 1936, wherein Jewish, Irish, and communists neighbors banded together to keep the fascists from marching through their town.
This new musical is full of rousing songs and a few poignant ballads. Generally, the songs are quite stirring, even if they don't exactly stick in your head. There may be a bit too many reprises of some, however.
The entire show is very moving, as are the performances. It is not always easy to watch, however, due to depictions of antisemitic violence, among other things, which may trigger some people. Ultimately, however, its message is one of hope. It reminds us of what can be accomplished when different groups set aside their differences and come together for a good cause. This is something that is all too often forgotten today.
The show is part of the Brits on Broadway series. Accordingly, it is being performed by the original British cast. Therefore, it may be hard to understand the accents sometimes, but that doesn't take away from its inspirational power.
