I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Still More Theater Saturday - Mister Snickers of New York City

We received complimentary tickets to Mister Snickers of New York City for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own.

What: Mister Snickers of New York City

Where: Urban Stages
             259 W. 30th St.
             New York, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up Due to Language and Subject Matter

When: This event occurred from 5/6 through 5/17.

Despite the adorable dog puppet at the center of this play with music and its framing as a pop-up book, this is not really a show for kids. True, it is the tender story of a relationship between a man and his dog, but there's more to it than that. It's also about a gay man turning to the bottle and destroying his relationship after being rejected by his family for who he is, and a woman dealing with grief after the loss of her brother. These things not only make it inappropriate for young children, but may also make it triggering to some people. Some parts of the story may also be triggering for extremely sensitive animal lovers, although the storyline is handled delicately.

In fact, the show handles its material well, and the story is touching.  A large part of that has to do with the skillfulness of the puppeteer, Mecca Akbar. Not for one minute do you not completely believe that the dog is a real, living, breathing being.

The resolution of the alcoholic storyline feels a little rushed. It seems like one minute he is still dealing with his alcoholism, and the next he is in recovery without much transition. However, for the most part, this is a well-written, well-acted, heartwarming but sometimes heartbreaking show.

And that's our view.  Tune in tomorrow for this week's Sunday Scoop.
