What: Utopia, Limited
Where: Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
119 E. 68th St.
New York, NY
When: This event occurred from April 18 to April 19, 2026
This past April, New York's Gilbert & Sullivan Players presented their final production of the season, the infrequently produced Utopia, Limited. This show revolves around the King of an Island Utopia deciding his country should become a carbon copy of England by adopting the same customs and institutions. When the king's daughter brings in six "flowers of progress" to assist the transition, things go a bit overboard, and the people revolt.
This timely show pokes fun at corporate overreach, political incompetence, imperialism, and more. Thus, its staging was extremely relevant even though it lacks any particularly memorable music, unlike much of the duo's other works.
The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players' production of this rarity was definitely up to their usual high standards. The roles were well cast and the singing voices lovely. The set was impressive. The costumes were bright and beautiful. It was a brilliant end to another excellent season.
