Theater Thursday - Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground

Eisenhower: This Piece of Ground is a one-man show starring John Rubenstein, who brilliantly portrays our 34th President of the United States. It takes place in 1962 and has Eisenhower negatively reacting to being rated 21st out of 35 rated Presidents. Therefore, he agrees to write a memoir and in order to facilitate doing so over the course of the play he makes notes into a stenography machine for his publisher.

The show is quite interesting from a strictly historical viewpoint. You will definitely learn just about everything you could possibly want to know about  President Eisenhower. His boyhood,  his adult family life, his military career, and his Presidency are all thoroughly covered in the show. A lot of quite fascinating information that most people probably don't know is revealed. For one thing, his mother was quite ahead of her time and insisted on getting an education. She was also a pacifist even though her son became a famous highly decorated general. She would make quite a fascinating subject for a biography or play herself. 

It was also interesting that as a Republican Eisenhower took the position that in order to remain free, America needed to work to ensure other countries' freedom as well, and the Democrats were in favor of isolationism. Now the two parties' positions have reversed. In fact, quite a lot covered in the show drew parallels to things that have happened in more recent times. Some of them quite scarily like an ego manic who wanted to be president (luckily then it didn't happen we can't say the same now). 

At almost two hours, even with an intermission, the show is quite long for a one-man show. It does feel a bit long at times even though it is still extremely compelling and definitely worth seeing.
