I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

In New Jersey

1) Six Rounds of Vengeance

In post-apocalyptic "Lost Vegas," a young gunslinger named Jess December enlists the help of a mysterious samurai cowboy to help avenge the murder of her sister. However, the gang they'll be going against has powers that go beyond just gunpowder and steel.  To get revenge, they may have to become just as bloodthirsty as the monsters they're facing. A classic Qui Nguyen play, Six Rounds of Vengeance blends a spaghetti western with his signature post-apocalyptic spin, adding in martial arts, puppetry, and comic book camp.

2) The Woman in Black

Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 classic horror novel, The Woman in Black grew to global acclaim and terrified thrill-seeking audiences for 33 years on the West End, becoming one of the longest-running plays in London and inspiring a blockbuster film franchise starring Daniel Radcliffe.

In this gripping production, audiences will be transported back in time as an old man recounts the eerie events of his youth. Journeying into the misty English countryside, he grapples with settling the estate of a family entrenched in a tragic history that continues to haunt (quite literally!) anyone who dares come too close.

Better watch your back – sewing needles can be sharp.

5) I Need That

Sam (Danny DeVito) doesn’t get out much. Actually, he doesn’t get out at all, opting instead for the safety of his house in the company of his things—his many, many things. But when a notice from the government arrives alerting Sam that he must clean up his property or face eviction, he’s forced to reckon with what’s trash, what’s treasure, and whether we can ever know the difference between the two.

Lieutenant Shane Horne has occupied her time satisfying the libidinous needs of all the women on the base—including the jealous general’s wife. But her own merries will not... come. Meanwhile a famed Angel re-descends to amend her previous prophesy, sending the Navy’s psychiatrist on an epic quest to save humanity. Will the general discover the affair? Will the earth be saved? Will they ever be merry enough?

Can you escape with your soul intact, or will you succumb to the evil in the Nightmare Dollhouse.

8) The Pool Plays 3.0

Antiquated F*ckery

Jasmine and Diggy have passion, humor, and friendship, but what they want are careers.

Jasmine and Diggy gas each other up and tear each other down with razor sharp dialogue as Charles poses the question of whether they can maintain their friendship as each tries to claim their space in a world that needs to hear them but doesn’t want to.

The Berlin Diaries

The great-grandfather of Oregon Book Award-winning playwright Andrea Stolowitz kept a journal for his descendants after escaping to New York City in 1939 as a German Jew. Following the complicated lure of genealogy, Stolowitz goes back to Berlin to bring the story of her unknown ancestors out of the archives into the light. The record keeps as many secrets as it shares; how do people become verschollen, lost, like library books?

In this complex, contemporary drama about the search for home, fragmented heritage, and Jewish diaspora, two performers scintillate between characters and locations at the border of reality and memory and the intersection of national history and private lives.

Two Brown Porters

This dark comedy by Naren Weiss is set in 19th century India during a period of great upheaval seen through the eyes of two friends watching their world transform. Reality is grim, much is absurd, yet nothing is as it seems.

Funny, surreal, and mesmerizing at times, Two Brown Porters explores history both real and imagined. As a precious diamond loaded with significance changes hands under the tightening yoke of imperialism, the fate of an individual and of a nation hangs in the balance. One choice can set momentous events into motion and two humble porters hold the key.

20) Forest Song
by artist and composer John P. Hastings
featuring musicians from TILT Brass
October 14-15, 2023 at Inwood Hill Park

Forest Song, a free music performance by artist and composer John P. Hastings and featuring musicians from TILT Brass, will be presented at Inwood Hill Park, Upper Manhattan on Saturday and Sunday, October 14, 2023 at 2pm and 4pm; and Sunday, October 15, 2023 at 1pm and 3pm. All four performances run approximately one hour and are free and open to the public. For more information: https://www.johnphastings.org/forestsong.

Forest Song is originated by artist and composer John P. Hastings who has created a number of site-specific performances, including Cloudsplitter in 2021. Forest Song utilizes a large ensemble spread throughout the park space performing a variety of sonic materials. Harmonies are reflected, words appear, and the melodies from revolutionary hymns are recycled, all conjuring a human and arboreal conversation. Over the course of an hour performance, the audience is free to wander the park, to hear the musicians at a distance, while also observing them close-by.

Many themes become apparent in the work. Myths and stories swirl around our forests, some of them fanciful and fantastic; others feed into age-old tropes of colonial settlement (The performance is sited at the location of the "sale" of Manhattan to Peter Minuet by the Lenape peoples). They have been many things to humans: a source of fuel, shelter, fear. They are a place of mystery and repose. Forest Song takes these many iterations of human conception of the forest and layers them to fashion a poly-narrative: a Native American home, a European folk drama, a technocratic "shelterbelt," and now a conserved piece of our future. Forests are a mirror for humans: the reflection of our wants and desires throughout our years of existence.

Inwood Hill Park, Manhattan, New York: A to Inwood / 207th Street or 1 to 215th Street. Enter at Shorakkopoch Rock.

26) Vangeline Theater/ New York Butoh Institute

presents

Queer Butoh 2023

Now Available Online

Through October 31, 2023

Vangeline Theater/ New York Butoh Institute announces the release of videos from Queer Butoh 2023 at the Brick Theater for a limited time through October 31, 2023. Videos are available at www.vimeo.com/vangeline.

Queer Butoh 2023 was performed at the Brick Theater in June 2023. The performances, all original works created by the performers, include Doll House, choreographed by Abby Howard and Lela Besom (who comprise the Arkansas-based L&A Productions), Origin, choreographed by Scoop Slone, and Posturas, from Yazmin Gonzalez and Andres Mauricio Sepulvda.

Doll House is a performance exploring the layers of inherited gender oppression and challenging the idea of gender norms, dress, and behavioral expectations while opening to the wild animal self and recognizing the majestic truth in nature and love.

Origin is the first installment of Scoop Slone’s three-part series titled States: Observations. Origin examines the state of quantum nothingness and the nature of existence at the atomic level, drawing reference to the origin of the (queer) self, which is always evolving. The series is based upon the quantum physics principle that particles have potentials of reality, and their state of being is not chosen until they are observed.

Posturas is a 15-minute foray into the stances and performative postures of power and seduction that genders borrow from each other and implement to construct their sense of "the other." The feminine and the masculine are explored with paced cynicism, scrutiny, and humor, in an attempt to liberate what it means to identify as a biological and bisexually operating woman on Earth. In Posturas, the dancer relates to her shadow as the masculine force which guides her through determination and assertiveness and protects and sustains her sense of the feminine. The general unsafety around being "too feminine" is lived throughout.by Yazmin Gonzalez.

27) COMING-OF-AGE FILM WHAT RHYMES WITH REASON HITS THEATERS FOR A ONE NIGHT EXCLUSIVE – TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10

Reckless Abandonment Pictures partnered with 988 Mental Health Lifeline and Fathom Events to empower teens with this special film, set to debut on

World Mental Health Day

On this year’s World Mental Health Day, Fathom Events will release the teen drama What Rhymes With Reason for one night only to more than 650 theaters nationwide. The October 10 showing begins at 7 PM local time and includes a special message from the filmmakers sharing their passion for stories that address the mental health challenges facing today’s youth.

What Rhymes With Reason is reflective of other coming-of-age classics like The Breakfast ClubStand By Me, and The Goonies to tell a timeless story of hope for the youth of today. The film’s trailer runs the gamut of emotion, exploring mental health through the trials and triumphs of modern teenagers.

The family-friendly film follows six teens, led by the charismatic Jesse Brandt. Tragedy ignites the group on a quest to find a legendary landmark hidden in the Oklahoma wilderness. Together, they navigate the adventure while confronting the darkness within themselves.

The all-star young cast of What Rhymes with Reason includes Gattlin Griffith (The Boys), Ricardo Hurtado (School of Rock), Giselle Torres (The Villains of Valley View), LaRonn Marzett, Katie Burgess, Juan Graterol and Bart Johnson (High School Musical). For many of the cast, the project was especially personal.

While it does not shy away from heavy subject matter, What Rhymes With Reason is ultimately a story of hope. Saturday, October 14, 2023

from 12pm to 6:30pm ET

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) and CreateTheater.com invite you to a S.P.A. Day: a workshop created to help Self Producing Artists relax about producing. Join TRU Producer Bootcamp: Essentials of Successful Self-Producing, led by TRU Executive Director and writer-producer, Bob Ost. Come learn to view your creative work from a business perspective and understand the need to think differently. Make smarter choices, not only now but also for the future of your show. It all seems a little overwhelming at times, but we will break it down into easily digestible bites and help take away some of the stress. When you know what you're doing, it can actually be fun and fulfilling! Cost: $130, $85 for TRU members; sign-up at https://truonline.org/events/self-producing-2023/.

In this groundbreaking workshop we will look at how artists can successfully take on the challenging role of "producer" to generate their own opportunities. The ones who are most successful have to master a range of business skills, don a variety of hats, and learn to be expert jugglers.

  • marketing pro Victoria Cairl, founder and CEO of Table 7 Strategy,
  • dramaturg/director/producer Cate Cammarata of CreateTheater.com,
