I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

BEST FRIENDS tells the saga of a friendship between three women over 3 decades.  Sophie, Tirzah, and Lelly met in their high school bathroom in the late 1960s. From that inauspicious beginning, a life-long friendship was born. Now, twenty years later, these best friends are brought together when Sophie and Tirzah have not spoken to one another for nearly two years, and Lelly tries to reconcile the two by bringing them to discuss “a matter of life and death.” The friends are seen in all phases of their lives and friendship, with flashbacks throughout the years starting from their youth until their forties.

2) Covenant

When a struggling guitarist returns to his small Georgia town a blues star, rumors begin swirling that he may have made a deal with the devil to attain his musical genius. Before long, however, it becomes clear he's not the only one with a secret. A mythic and suspenseful new play that delivers one devilish twist after another, York Walker's Covenant explores the power of belief and the thin line between rumor and truth.

10/5 - 12/3

Opening Night 10/26

3) Excorcistic

This musical parody brings about horror, hilarity, and the most powerhouse rock tunes you’ll see in a theater this year! The production brings to roaring life with iconic imagery and an explosive live band, the story of a movie star whose daughter becomes possessed and is helped by priests who try to save her.

4) She's Alive

Elsa Lanchester, best known today as the actress who played the Bride of Frankenstein, was a twice-Oscar nominated star who went on to become a character actress in films like Mary Poppins and That Darn Cat! Off-screen, she was married to gay actor Charles Laughton. ELSA LANCHESTER: SHE’S ALIVE! recreates a bawdy cabaret/nightclub act that Lanchester toured with late in life -- including some of the original ribald songs she performed -- intermixed with backstage memories of her colorful life.

C) Closing Dates

6) The Shark is Broken

FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming on JAWS is delayed…again. The film’s lead actors—theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider—are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic…if it doesn’t sink them all.

Golden Theatre (252 West 45th St.)
Closing 11/19

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit TheSharkIsBroken.com

7) Some Like It Hot

Set in Chicago when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, SOME LIKE IT HOT is the rollicking story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they’re on the run as the newest members of the swingingest big band ever to cross the country. Can they hide in plain sight without completely losing themselves? Or will the mob, the truth, and maybe even love itself finally catch up to them?

Shubert Theatre (225 West 44th St.)
Closing 12/30

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.SomeLikeItHotMusical.com

D) Extended Runs

8) Communion

Ripped from the headlines, COMMUNION is a one-man show about a gay Catholic school teacher who is fired when the church discovers that he married a man. His termination causes a crisis of faith, not only for himself but for his entire community. Based on the real-life story of Broadway actor and playwright Matthew LaBanca, COMMUNION spotlights themes of delusion, spiritual trauma, and hope, reminding those who would use religion to discriminate against LGBTQ people that the most basic tenet of spiritual life is that we are called to love one another.

12) THE CONGRESS FOR JEWISH CULTURE CELEBRATES

DIAMOND JUBILEE WITH WEBSITE LAUNCH

Hundreds of Extraordinarily Rare Visual and Literary

Volumes To Be Added Beginning Next Month

The Congress for Jewish Culture unveiled their exciting, revamped website in honor of their 75th Anniversary. Beginning in October, they will be adding a massive number of publications never before available on any digital format, with search features and substantial English translations. These will include highly valuable research materials, works of fiction and plays, as well as photographs, artworks and archival audio and visual recordings. The website will wed these historic materials to the Congress’s current projects demonstrating the continuity of Yiddish culture in the 21st century.

The Congress for Jewish Culture works with some of the finest writers, translators, composers, and performers in the field of Yiddish today. They cultivate the living language in all its manifestations, be it spoken or sung, in the classroom, on the page or on the stage. The Congress has a distinguished publishing history in both Yiddish and English; and a regular calendar of memorials, concerts and plays; runs classes and literary reading circles; and fields Yiddish-related questions. They provide guidance in finding materials for reading groups or research and provide synagogues and community centers with Yiddish programming. They have presented theatrical works worldwide, including the Off-Broadway smash Tevye Served Raw (hailed as ‘Poignant and funny’ by the Jewish Standard), and most recently Yelena Shmulenson’s Night of the Murdered Poets. The Congress for Jewish Culture was founded in 1948 by luminaries of Yiddish letters at that time, including poet and dramatist H. Leivick (author of The Golem), novelist Joseph Opatoshu (author of Romance of a Horsethief, basis for the 1971 film starring Yul Brynner) and others. The current executive director of the Congress is Shane Baker, renowned performer on the contemporary Yiddish stage and acclaimed literary translator of the Yiddish Waiting for Godot.

The new website development, a colossal literary and technical undertaking starting in October, will begin to provide previously unavailable functionality for a new Library and Leksikon section of the site, including access to their magnum opus, the invaluable eight-volume Leksikon fun der Nayer Yidisher Literatur (Biographical Dictionary of Modern Yiddish Literature) and the 2011 supplement on Soviet Yiddish writers, which contains thousands of entries on Yiddish writers, making up the most comprehensive reference source for Yiddish literary research.

The numerous plays which will be added throughout this project include Der Dibek (The Dybbuk) by Sh. Ansky, Dos Groyse Gevins (The Big Win) by Sholem Aleichem, and other classics of the Yiddish theater in clear, modern Yiddish texts.

The Leksikon will appear side by side with Professor Joshua Fogel's massive Leksikon translation project which has already received one million views, and will incorporate a host of new digital tools allowing them to integrate the latest scholarship and data on these writers.

The library will eventually include every work published by the Congress for Jewish Culture and its associates, with several hundred important volumes of not only research materials, but belles-lettres by great Yiddish writers as well.

WHERE:            McCarter Theatre Center
                         Matthews Theatre
                         91 University Place
                         Princeton, NJ

WHEN:               October 4, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.

DETAILS: Born in France and raised in Princeton, Laurie Berkner cut her teeth in rock bands before stumbling on an innate talent for writing songs that connected with kids. Her music has captivated generations of children, speaking to their experiences and empathizing with their humanity, free of condescension. Songs like “Pig on Her Head” and “We Are the Dinosaurs” brim with child-like wonder, and more self-effacing tunes such as “I’m Not Perfect” or “I’m a Mess” preach the beauty of imperfection—reminders useful to both parents and kids. A pioneer in what is now referred to as the progressive “kindie rock” movement—a less saccharine style of music for children and their parents—Berkner’s shows delight and inspire with music you won’t mind hearing on repeat.

Laurie will perform two matinee shows, including an early solo sensory-friendly and relaxed performance for sensory sensitivities. The second show will feature Laurie and her full band.

VIP Meet & Greet tickets are exclusively available for the 3:00 p.m. performance with code BERKNER24.

Every Ticket Includes a Donation
$1 of every ticket sold will support the Princeton-based nonprofit Good Grief, an organization that teaches resiliency and facilitates healthy coping in the lives of over 900 children each month who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This collaboration is supported by Twinkle Arts for Good.

About the Solo Sensory Friendly Performance (11:00 a.m. only)
For her sensory-friendly performances, Laurie performs in an environment that has been adapted to provide a welcoming atmosphere for individuals with autism, learning differences, or other sensory and communication needs, so that they and their families may enjoy Laurie's live performance together.

At a sensory-friendly performance, the concert is performed at the same high quality as always, with the light and sound levels adjusted slightly to create a more sensory-sensitive environment. Sensory-friendly performances are “shush-free” zones where patrons are free to talk and leave their seats throughout the performance, as well as bringing their own snacks, fidgets, and communications devices with them to their seats.

Most of all, a sensory-friendly performance is a judgment-free environment, where all are welcome to enjoy the performance in whatever way makes the experience work for them.

20) LUG NUT ENTERTAINMENT
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
NEW YORK’S LONG RUNING MURDER MYSTERY

 PERFECT CRIME
TO PRESENT

PERFECT CRIME: THE EXHIBIT
WOMEN WHO KILL & THE MOVIE STARS WHO PLAYED THEM

OCTOBER 1 – NOVEMBER 5
AT THE THEATER CENTER

THE ANNUAL HALLOWEEN-SEASON LOBBY EXHIBIT RETURNS TO SPOTLIGHT WOMEN ACCUSED OF MURDER AND THE VARIOUS HOLLYWOODACTRESSES THAT HAVE PLAYED THEM

ON THE SILVER SCREEN

THE EXHIBIT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC -
AND POINTS TO INFAMOUS WOMEN SUCH AS ALICE CRIMMONS,

DARLIE ROUTIER, KATHERINE KNIGHT, PAMELA SMART,

AMANDA KNOX AND LIZZIE BORDEN

Lug Nut Entertainment (Daniel DeMello and Nathaniel Nowak) in association with the long running Off-Broadway whodunit PERFECT CRIME, today announced the return of the the annual Halloween season lobby exhibit PERFECT CRIME: THE EXHIBIT. This year’s exhibit “Women Who Kill and The Movie Stars That Played Them” will run Friday October 1 through Monday November 5, within the 4th floor lobby of The Theater Center, located at 210 West 50th Street. The exhibit is free and open to the general public during box office hours 10AM to 8PM, Monday – Friday.

The lobby exhibit eerily glances at the notorious women accused of murder throughout history, drawing a connection to the Hollywood actresses who brought their stories to life on the silver screen. The exhibit delves into the chilling narratives of women like Darlie Routier (portrayed by Farah Fawcett in The Burning Bed), and Pamela Smart (played by Nicole Kidman in To Die For). Visitors can expect an unnerving journey through history and cinema, where America’s fascination with crime weaves a tapestry of intrigue, suspense, and enduring allure.

One prominent example of this intriguing intersection between true crime and cinema is the enduring fixation on Lizzie Borden. Over the decades, top actresses like Elizabeth Montgomery, Chloe Sevigny, and Christina Ricci have stepped into the shoes of the Victorian era socialite who was accused of gruesomely killing her parents with a hatchet. Their portrayals have ranged from the darkly dramatic (like Elizabeth Montgomery’s was) to purely fantastical - as was the case when writers for the Lifetime network portrayed Lizzie as woman who murdered half the residents of the city of Fall River, MA.

The exhibit will also feature the step and repeat where all criminals get their closeup: the mugshot board - where visitors will be able to pose for photos with various weapons of their choice – most deriving from the gruesome stories featured within the exhibit.

The Theater Center is located on the corner of Broadway and 50th Street, at 210 West 50th Street.

29) Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup and David Shenk

present

the Moving Memory project:

fill in the blank

a festival devoted to memory and forgetting

Friday, October 6 at 8pm at Broadway Presbyterian Church

Free Admission

Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup and David Shenk present the latest installment of the Moving Memory projectfill in the blank on Friday, October 6 at 8pm at Broadway Presbyterian Church, 601 W. 114th Street New York, NYC.

Launched in 2019, The Moving Memory Project embodies its founders’ vision of bringing together artists, caregivers, and seniors to create a community of care surrounding issues connected to memory loss and destigmatizing the diagnosis of dementia, with the goal of raising awareness, to increase funding, until a cure is found.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Stefanie Nelson and Maya Orchin

Dea, solo version performed by Maya Orchin

Composer: Borut Krzisnik

Recently premiered at the Festival Quartiers Danses in Montréal, Dea draws its inspiration from the play Nostra Dea (Our Goddess), written by Massimo Bontempelli. In the play, the protagonist, Dea has no memory. Multiple identities, traits, and appearances meet on this constantly renewed blank slate. Without any sense of self or past, Dea bridges the gap between human and puppet. Playing on and disrupting the original piece, Dea questions our sense of self and of others with evolving identities and renewed behaviors.

Rebecca Margolick

Bunker + Vault

This solo dance is about memory experienced through the body and generations, influenced by archival research on women who resided at the 92nd Y Residence and The Clara de Hirsch Home for Working Girls from 1899-1950. Rebecca’s practice grew from this research, embodying and visualizing memories of these women, as well as her own, approaching time in a non-linear fashion, reflecting the parallels, struggles, and shared history through generations of working-class women. This relentless solo plays with rigor and rhythm as a grounding force in a chaotic mind. The work won the Jury Prize for “best indoor choreographic work” at the 2019 Festival Quartiers Danses in Montreal Canada and been presented in NYC and internationally. This is the second presentation of this work at tMMp.

Mignolo Dance

Excerpts from Paradox in Translation

Paradox in Translation embodies two poems, creating a vocabulary that exactly maps to the spoken/sung text. This is complemented by more disjointed translations, culminating in a dreamscape that explores the contradictions inherent in memory, love, and loss. Choreographed by Charly Santagado, with text by Matthew Menchaca and Charly Santagado and music by Emory Campbell and Steve Reich (Alex Smoke Remix), the piece is performed by Charly Santagado and Eriel Santagado. This is the second presentation of this work at tMMp.

fill in the blank is designed as a counter piece to Nelson and Orchin’s DEA. It is part of an ongoing collaboration between Nelson, Justin Randolph Thompson and Bradly Dever Treadaway. Bringing together the floods and floodlines of memory, the work interrogates embodied archives and the ideas, individuals and legacies that occupy narrative voids.
