I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

Where-To-Go Wednesday - The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

What: The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Where: Ed Sullivan Theater
            1697 Broadway
            New York, NY

Who: Ages 16 and Up

Me - It was really cool to have a chance to attend a taping of Stephen Colbert. It looked much bigger in person than on TV. Taping the episode takes a lot of time.

Before the taping, you line up and wait a long time. Usually, you wait outside longer but they let us go in earlier because it was an especially hot day. In the lobby where we were waiting, they were playing clips of old episodes of the show. Most of them were funny. I don't watch the show that much so for me it was mostly all new.

Before they seat the audience, they let people go to the bathroom in small groups. It takes a long time because there are so many people. It reminds me of elementary school when they take small groups to do things.

When you go into the theater, the seating is very arbitrary. I don't know how they decide where everyone is going to sit. Somehow they fill it all in. Besides, there is not really a bad seat because there are monitors all over.

Once everyone is seated, they let people go to the bathroom one more time because when the taping starts you are not allowed to get up. After that, there is a warm-up comedian. He talks to people in the audience. I'm glad he didn't pick us. I don't like to be the center of attention.

Next, they introduce the band. I didn't know who any of the band members were before, but I have seen them because I've seen the show. The band plays for the audience before the taping starts. They also play during the commercials. Then, Stephen Colbert comes out and answers some audience questions. We found among other things that Jesus Christ Superstar is his favorite musical. Most of the questions were interesting but one person asked what his favorite condiment was. That was kind of weird.

Finally, they started the taping. The guests that day were Ice T and some guy I never heard of. Ice T was much more interesting. He talked about a book he wrote and not Law and Order. I don't watch Law and Order anyway so I didn't really mind.

It goes relatively quickly once they start taping. If something gets messed up they go back and fix it later. They film the pre-commercial teasers after the whole interview. The audience sees everything you see at home because all graphics and even the opening credits are shown on monitors.

Stephen Colbert is just as nice as he seems on TV. Everyone else that works there seems nice too. All in all, it was an exciting and unique experience that I very much enjoyed.

Mom - It was extremely fun having the opportunity to attend a taping of The Late Night With Stephen Colbert. Even though you are there for quite a while, it doesn't feel that long. The worst part is standing in line waiting to go into the theater and be seated. Usually, you have to wait in line outside, but since we were there on an extremely hot day, they actually let us wait inside the building.

It was so exciting just to be inside the historic  Ed Sullivan Theater where the late great performer of that name produced his show. The Ed Sullivan show was on for 23 years and numerous performers made their TV (or at least their American TV debut) on the show including Elvis and The Beatles. Later, David Letterman taped his show there. It is awe-inspiring to even set foot in such a historic location.

These days, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is continuing the tradition of making great television in this venerated location. It was such an honor to be part of it even if only for one night. It was lovely to be able to meet Stephen Colbert in person as well. Of course, we did not get to meet him personally. There are way too many audience members for that, and we are still just coming out of a pandemic. However, prior to taping the show, he talks to the audience and answers a few questions. He is just as nice in person as he seems when you watch him on TV. He treats the staff, guests, and the audience with utmost kindness and respect.

It was fun to get to hear the band play in person too. Normally, you only get to hear them play snatches of songs as the show comes back from commercial breaks, When you are there, you get to hear them play throughout the commercial breaks and a little bit before the show starts taping as well.

Attending a taping of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is quite an enjoyable way to spend a few hours. It doesn't even matter if you are at all familiar with the guests he has on the show when you attend a taping. We would definitely recommend it, and if we had the chance we would go again.

And that's our view. For more information about the The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, visit www.cbs.com/shows/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert. For information about attending a taping or to register, visit colbert.1iota.com/show/536/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert#
