Mom's view: Alice by Heart is a unique take on the story of Alice in Wonderland. It is told through the memory of a young girl who is living with a group of people in an underground subway station which has been turned into a shelter during World War II in London. She plays the part of Alice as she tells the familiar tale from memory, and the other people around her play the various other parts. The show emphasizes the juxtaposition of the fantasy world of the story and the harsh reality the characters are living in.. Every once in a while an air raid siren is heard and the action of the play is interupted as everyone is forced to run for cover. The music which includes songs with such crazy names as Manage Your Flamingo and Sick to Death of Alice-ness is mostly fun. The main theme song of the show "Down the Hole" is very pretty and does stick in the mind at least when you first leave the theatre. Molly Gordon is a plucky and poised Alice. The rest of the cast does a good job taking on a variety of roles. Noah Galvin deserves special mention in this regard. If you did not see him as Evan Hansen in Dear Evan Hansen or in any of his various other stage roles and you only know him from his role in the sitcom, The Real O'Neals, and you cannot picture him in any other role, you will be pleasantly surprised. He is really quite a good actor. The staging of the show is very unique and interesting. All in all, those open to a new take on an old familiar story will probably enjoy this entertaining show.
