What: The Turtle Back Zoo
Where: 560 Northfield Avenue
West Orange, NJ
Who: Everyone
Our view: The Turtle Back Zoo is a nice sized zoo not too big and not too small. Good for the little ones because it is not as big and/or overwhelming as a larger zoo like the Bronx Zoo might be. The Zoo is divided into eleven different sections with names such as Asia, Africa, World of Water and Essex Farm. However, the sections are small and it is easy to go through the whole zoo in only a few hours. Just be aware that it is kind of hilly so you may want to wear comfortable shoes and bring a stroller for the little ones. Aside from the animals exhibited at the zoo, there is also a carousel, a train ride, and a nice play area. Costs are reasonable at $10.00 for adults and $7.00 for seniors and children. Children under 2 are free. Yearly zoo memberships are available for $35.00 for individuals or $90.00 for a family of up to two adults and up to four children under 18. Zoo membership includes among other things invitations to special night events and free and/or discounted admission to over 110 affiliated zoos and aquariums across the country. The zoo is open 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Saturday and 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM Sunday every day all year except Thanksgiving Christmas and New Years Day.
Special note: Mommy & Me classes, Zoo Camp and Birthday party packages are available
