Even in this divisive world, there is so much to be
grateful for, including the many animals we share our
planet with. Therefore, we should treat our fellow
creatures with the utmost care and respect so that we
don't lose any more species than we already have. However,
we don't always agree on how to respect and care for animals. For instance,
whether animals should be allowed to perform in circuses
and other shows has become very hotly debated in recent
years.
Tim Schooley, a former circus performer himself, addresses
this issue in his book, The Circus of the Vanishing
Elephant, but not in a heavy-handed way. He does an
excellent job of presenting both sides of the debate. Plus, the book is about more than just that.
It is an interesting, heartfelt story full of fascinating,
well-drawn characters, including the animals, especially
Henrietta, the young elephant at the center of the story.
It touchingly portrays the loving bonds that can form
between humans and animals but doesn't shy away from the
darker side of these relationships. For more about this
book, see our previous post Tips for Tuesday - Books: The Circus of the Vanishing
