The Opening is a musical about a young chess prodigy who discovers a unique but shocking new way to cheat. Revealing more would not only be a spoiler but would likely get this post flagged by Blogger for indecency. The humor in this new show is that risque. Accordingly, not only is it extremely unsuitable for children, but anyone with a sensitive nature will also probably want to skip it.
If you can get past that, there is a lot to like about this show. It is full of catchy, somewhat memorable songs. True, some of the songs are loaded with sexual innuendos, but not all of them are. Two of the latter are the opening number "Sixty Four Squares," which immediately pulls you right into the world of the show in a fun way, and "The Monopoly Song" which is indeed about the popular game. Portions of the former get repeated throughout the show.
The cast is full of energy, which is surely necessary to keep up the pace of the numerous vigorous dance numbers that fill the show. Ryan Jacobs, who plays the central character, Newton, the young prodigy, is the standout cast member. He is the perfect mix of doofy and lovable.
