Rockingham, one of the oldest houses in the Millstone River Valley, was George Washington's final military headquarters during the Revolutionary War. Before that, it was the home of New Jersey Supreme Court Justice, John Berrien. His wife, Margaret, inherited it upon his death making her one of the first women to own property. It was she who rented it to Washington.
The site is listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places. It is also part of the Women's Heritage Trail. It was previously located in three other locations before ending up where it is now. It was painted and restored to look how it might have looked during colonial times. A barn, several other buildings, an orchard, and an 18th-century garden have also been added.
Only guided tours of the mansion are available. Tours are free but are limited to 10 people and must be booked at least a day in advance. Tours include stories both stories of the house and require climbing stairs. Picture-taking inside the building is not allowed.
Cooking, spinning, and other demonstrations are also held at the site. Special events include Children's Day and December holiday tours. Recreational activities available at the nearby Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park include bike riding, hiking, boating, and fishing.
