I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.

Whether you're a novice or seasoned dancer, our program offers a distinct opportunity to ignite your passion and refine your skills year-round and during the summer months. Tango Level 1: Tuesdays 6:15pm – 7:15pm

Join the School of Dance in Adult Tango! In these classes, we will work on the foundational basis you need to dance Argentine Tango. You'll learn individual and couples techniques, and useful tools to take to the dance floor. For Tango 1, no previous experience or partner are required.


Tango Level 2: Tuesdays 7:15pm – 8:15pm

For the tango enthusiast that have prior experience in this dance style, there's Tango 2! The class is designed to provide you with the tools to take your training to the next level using individual and couples techniques, and useful tools to take to the dance floor. Previous experience or partner required.


Salsa Level 1: Mondays 6:15-7:15pm

Join us in this beginner Salsa for Adults! Get your body moving with us while learning the basic steps, shines, and partner work found in New York's Salsa On2 timing. All steps are safe for all ages and no partner is needed. This class explores the Latin dance of Salsa through body isolations, rhythm, and partner work which are explained and demonstrated in detail using dance kinesiology and theory.


Salsa Level 2: Mondays 7:15-8:15pm

Join the School of Dance in the Beginner/Intermediate Salsa for Adults! This class is designed to be the continuation of our Beginner Salsa, and is also be ideal for those who have prior training in this dance style. This class will give you the opportunity to take your training to the next level! Steps are safe for all ages and no partner is needed.


Salsa Open Level: Saturdays 2-3pm

If your desire is to learn how to dance Salsa and don't know where to start, look no more! Designed for dancers with any type of experience, this class will teach you the first steps into enjoying this Latin rhythm.


Ballet Level 1: Wednesdays 7-8pm

Join the School of Dance for this class designed to teach you the basic principles of ballet! If you have ever wanted to learn ballet, this is the perfect class for you. It will provide the necessary tools that will allow you to understand how a ballet class works and how the muscles in your body need to engage to achieve the simple but complex steps of this dance style.


Ballet Level 2: Thursdays 7-8pm

This class is ideal for dance enthusiasts that have at least one year of training experience in Ballet, or that have taken our Beginner Ballet Level course. We will explore new steps and combinations that will allow you to level up your training by building a solid technique.


Mat Pilates: Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm

Whether a dancer or not, having a balanced body will prevent chronic pain and injuries. The Mat Pilates class is designed to improve posture, flexibility, balance and body awareness. Open to all ages and levels, no previous experience in Pilates is required.


Contemporary: Thursdays 7:30-8:30pm

Class will start with a full warm-up that focuses on strength, technique, and flexibility appropriately preparing the dancers bodies in a safe-injury preventive way. We will review the basics as well as work on more challenging elements in a fun non judgmental environment. Dancers will move through the space, learn musicality, explore their artistic choices and build stamina. Class will end working on choreography.


Tap: Wednesdays 7-8pm

Whether you have some tap experience or have never danced before, join us in our adult tap classes! This class will be tailored to meet the needs of each student. We will focus on tap fundamentals, gradually progressing throughout the session. We will dance to a variety of music, from classic jazz standards to contemporary music. As we learn technique, we will be improving balance and our rhythmic awareness. Come have fun dancing in a social, encouraging setting!

This year’s series centers on the tongue in cheek notion that “We’ve Been Here Before,” a direct response to the rise of authoritarian ideas in United States, told through lyrics both sung and rapped, and above all, through movement. MCC Theater (Bernie Telsey and Will Cantler, Co-Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director) announced programming for their Fall 2024 public engagement season. MCC Theater will start their Fall 2024 season with a Public Engagement Season Kickoff on Thursday August 22 at 5:30pm which will be a community forum with Douglas Lyons (MCC’s Table 17), Robert O’Hara (MCC’s Shit. Meet. Fan.), and Zhailon Levingston (MCC’s Table 17) who will discuss their upcoming plays, working Off-Broadway, and their roles in the industry.

 

MCC is thrilled to expand their public engagement offerings to include workshops throughout the year that will be open to the public. MCC was founded by a group of young theater artists interested in creating peer-based learning opportunities and these workshops offer a return to the organization's roots and further the vision of activating the theater into a creative artist hub in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Space for workshops is limited and requires registration. These are fee based with accessible pricing available, ages 14 and up. The first two workshops are:

  • Devising Workshop – Saturday September 21 & Sunday September 22 from 12-4pm. Want to make experimental theater in collaboration with others? This workshop will dig into the elements of image, sound, text and more where participants will get a taste of what it's like to be in MCC’s Youth Company Performance Lab and create new pieces of micro-theater. This two-day workshop will be led by MCC's Director of Public Engagement & Education Meggan Gomez.
  • Queer Horror Writing Workshop – Saturday October 26 at 1pm. Feeling spooky? Stop by this Halloween weekend workshop “What’s Hiding in the Closet.” Prepare for some exercises that may or may not lead to an exorcism on the page.

 

There will also be a number of free events open to the public tied to both fall productions.

  • Thursday August 29: MCC will host a new version of their Audience Conversations—Late Night Lobby will be an opportunity to stay after the performance to get on your feet, talk to new folks, and make connections. MCC’s lobby will remain open with light refreshments to keep the conversation going.
  • Thursday September 5 at 5:30pmCommunity Forum on Disappearance of the Black Rom-Com. This guest facilitated forum will discuss the importance of Black love in media and the disappearance of the Black rom-com.
  • Sunday September 8 at 3pm: This performance will be staffed by Broadway Babysitters, providing free childcare.
  • Thursday September 12Community Night. Following that evening’s performance, head over to one of the neighborhood bars to continue the conversation.

The PRO Master Class 3-Class Series will begin on September 12th, each providing a program designed to enhance audition skills, boost confidence, and offer invaluable insights into the casting process. Participants will engage in hands-on coaching sessions with renowned Casting Directors or Talent Agents, gaining firsthand knowledge of what it takes to succeed in the highly competitive world of Broadway and beyond.


Each PRO Master Class Series meets for 3 consecutive weeks, with each class taught by a different industry insider. Students will work one-on-one with the instructor on cuts of audition songs or monologues in a classroom setting. Participants will receive personalized feedback from the instructors, helping the actor excel with each selection. Each class will also include a short Q&A, providing information on the intricacies of the casting process and insight on what the auditioner can do to stand out.

9) Philadelphia Zoo Celebrates Public Debut
of Baby Sumatran Orangutan


Philadelphia Zoo is thrilled to celebrate the public debut of its critically endangered Sumatran orangutan baby. The animal team has determined the baby is a boy and have named him Jambi after a city on the island of Sumatra where this species is native. Born to the Zoo’s 31-year-old female Tua and 28-year-old male, Sugi, on June 26, the infant continues to look strong, and Tua continues to be an excellent mother, nursing and holding the baby at all times.

Mom and baby are now exploring their outdoor habitat at PECO Primate Reserve. The two continue to make their own schedule on when they will be visible to guests. They have access to their outdoor habitat and indoor habitats where visitors can get a glimpse of them. The two will also have access to their bedroom space to spend time alone.

Popularly referred to as “Shakespeare for Sports Fans", this event features actors competing in a never-before rehearsed Shakespearean play, striving to receive the least amount of "fouls" from the keen-eyed judges and be crowned as the best memorized of the cast. In a brand new twist, this year's Unrehearsed: R&J will feature the two theater companies representing the two families of Verona, the Montagues and the Capulets, competing in a "faceoff" style while performing one of the bard's most beloved tragedies.
