The York Theater Company's latest series, New2NY is the opposite of their popular Musicals in Mufti series. Instead of highlighting worthy musicals that perhaps didn't get enough recognition in their initial Broadway run, it spotlights brand-new shows. Although, over the years, the York has occasionally featured shows that were new to New York before, this is the first time, they have presented an entire four-show series of them.

Now Comes the Fun Part is the first show in the series. The show is a delightful musical review about the joys and tribulations of getting older. It is full of fun songs and amusing vignettes (and one particularly poignant vignette that may even bring a tear to your eye). The show addresses issues like turning 50, retirement, dating again, and more. Anyone of a certain age is sure to relate to at least some of the topics covered in this appealing show.

Theater Thursday - Unentitled

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up 

When: Through September 1, 2024

On the surface, Unentitled is the story of a middle-class African American family pitted against each other in the struggle to determine whether or not to sell their Long Island vacation home property. On the one side are inspirations and dreams and the need to make some quick cash on the other the family legacy. The issue becomes even more pressing and divisive when a family secret is revealed. 

Beneath the surface, the show is about race, class, and so much more. With a sharply written script by playwright, Charles White, and an excellent ensemble cast,  Unentitled is an extremely thoughtful and engrossing drama.

Where-To-Go Wednesday - Reanimating Theater The Photography of Friedman-Abeles

What: Reanimating Theater The Photography of Friedman-Abeles

Where: New York Library of the Performing Arts

              40 Lincoln Center Plaza

When: Through September 25, 2024

The Friedman-Abeles studio was the preeminent theatrical photography studio from 1954 through 1970. Since this was before the digital age, most of their photographs have not been seen in years. However, over the last several years the New York Library for the Performing Arts began to digitize them. Thus. they can now be viewed online. If you want to view them in a more unique way, visit the current exhibit at the library, Reanimating Theater The Photography of Friedman-Abeles.

In this exhibit, instead of showing each of the photographs separately several shots have been put together in a process called lenticular printing to simulate animation. This makes it feel like the pictures are moving as you walk by and makes you feel like you are actually there. It also makes details that might not catch your eye in a static photograph more noticeable. 

Visit this fun quasi-interactive exhibit to see the fire juggling scene from Carnival, Ben Vereen as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, and part of the iconic Dance at the Gym number from West Side Story as if you were there. Other shows represented in the exhibit include Camelot, Bye Bye Birdie and more.

Tips for Tuesday - Books: Practical Rules for Cursed Witches & Given Our History, and Movie: Stand Back, Doors Closing

Books: Practical Rules for Cursed Witches & Given Our History

Me - Practical Rules for Cursed Witches is a witchy, sapphic cozy fantasy.

The characters are endearing, albeit a bit flat. The protagonist, Delilah, is fierce, determined, and sassy but also loyal and caring. Kieran is an absolute sweetheart who shows so much kindness to those around him despite how little was shown to him. Briar is less likable as she's extremely prickly and often rude, however, beneath it she has a good heart. Unfortunately, beyond those traits, there wasn't much to them so it was hard to truly care what they were going through and where they ended up.

The relationships formed between these characters were definitely the heart of the story, with Delilah and Kieran's friendship being my favorite. Their dynamic was so much fun to watch and I loved that Delilah– Kiernan's first-ever friend– cared so deeply for him. The romance between Delilah and Briar, on the other hand, could've used more development. It seemed far more based on physical attraction than an actual emotional connection, especially since the two barely took the time to get to know each other. Their banter was also a bit boring, but they shared some cute moments and I found myself rooting for them more as the book went on.

The plot of this book was intriguing as it surrounded two curses, neither of which the characters fully understood. The mysterious nature and vague details regarding these curses piqued my curiosity and kept me interested in continuing to read but the slow-paced writing didn't match the intensity of the circumstances the characters were in. Obviously, it's a cozy fantasy so it isn't supposed to have super high stakes or tons of action but a book– especially one that's over 400 pages long– either needs to have deeply developed, complex characters or a captivating, well-paced plot if it's going to keep readers engaged.  Sadly, this book had neither making for a cozy and sometimes cute but ultimately unremarkable read. If the plot really appeals to you or you're looking for a surface-level but easy-to-read young adult cozy fantasy, you might enjoy reading this book. I just found that it was a bit too long for the story it was telling and it lacked the character/relationship development I need to connect to a book.

Mom - Given Our History was a frustrating novel about a couple who meet as kids in camp and are obviously meant for each other but don't get together until years later for stupid reasons. Although at first when they were young it made sense that Clara would be reluctant to start a deeper relationship with Theodore, even though she clearly always loved him, because she didn't want to change anything.  He was her best friend and she feared losing him if things didn't work out.  However, as they got older, her reasons for pushing him away were just pigheaded and stubborn. It made her a kind of annoying character even though the pair made a cute couple, and he was a great guy. It was evident that he always cared for her even though she kept pushing him away. If you love a book with a big payoff in the end and don't care what it takes to get there, you may enjoy this book.  However, if you are interested in unique stories with original conflicts that don't seem artificial or overused, maybe not so much. 

Movie: Stand Back, Doors Closing

Today we are recommending Stand Back, Doors Closing, a sweet and engrossing film reminiscent of Before Sunrise. Julissa and Ryan are at a crossroads in their respective lives when they meet on the DC Metro and spend an intense day together. She is mulling over whether to drop out of grad school. He is dealing with the recent breakup of a relationship. Although at first they are deeply guarded with each other, gradually they break through each other's masks, reveal their true selves, and fall in love. The couple are charmingly played by Carmen Berkley and Reilly Walters respectively who have a nice chemistry. All in all, it is lovely and appealing film.

More Theater Monday - The Royal Pyrate

We were given complimentary tickets to The Royal Pyrate for review purposes. Any and all opinions expressed here are our own. 

What: The Royal Pyrate 

Where: Waterfront Barge Museum

              Brooklyn, NY

Who: Recommended for Ages 15 and Up

When: This event took place on August 24 & August 25, 2025

The Royal Pyrate is a musical about the relationship between the Pirate Black Sam Bellamy and Mary Hallett.  A concert version of the show was recently staged on board the Waterfront Barge Museum, a Brooklyn museum that used to be a working barge on the Hudson River. There could not have been a more appropriate venue for this show not only was the show actually on a boat but the occasional rocking really added to the sense of time and place and plunged the audience fully into the story.

The show was as rollicking an adventure as you'd expect a pirate musical to be with a surprisingly sweet love story at its center. The couple's chemistry as played by Scott Stangland and Jordan Kai Burnett was clear. Stangland gave the ruthless pirate a deeply compassionate core. Burnett's Mary was feisty but deeply true to her love. They were joined by Lauren Molina as the audacious Paulsgrave Williams a loyal member of Sam's crew and Eddie Cooper as both the notorious Blackbeard and the self-righteous, Reverand Treat. The band members skillfully and at times hilariously filled as various other crew members and more. 

The score was a mix of rock songs and old-time sea chanteys with a couple of sweet ballads thrown in as well.  Some of the nicest numbers were the duets between Sam and Mary. The songs in general were a big part of the general joyfulness and fun of the entire evening.

8) CENTENARY STAGE COMPANY NOW ACCEPTING APPLICANTS FOR FALL 2024 SESSION OF YOUNG PERFORMERS WORKSHOP

Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performer’s Workshop returns this fall from September 14 through December 22, and the deadline to apply is September 13. The Young Performer’s Workshop is a 15-week theatre training program for performers ages 8-18. Each session culminates with a Festival of Shows performed by the students. New applicants must complete an interview with the director of the program, Michael Blevins, before registering. Initial interviews will take place via phone or zoom call. The price for the first student in one family is $425.00, a second student is $395.00, and a third student is $300.00. The Young Performer’s Workshop is a 15-week intensive musical theatre program designed to teach kids ages 8-18. This is a hands-on program designed to meet the needs of beginning, intermediate, and advanced performers interested in working in theatre. Throughout the fall session, students have the opportunity to learn about multiple facets of theatre arts from acting, singing and dancing, to stage management, props, and costuming. Each session concludes with a weekend Festival of Shows. Enrolled students will also have the opportunity to be cast in CSC's 2024 mainstage Holiday Spectacular: A Christmas Carol, although casting is not guaranteed. 

Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop is directed by Broadway, movie, and television alumnus Michael Blevins. Some of Blevins’ previous credits include director and choreographer of the National Tours of Babes in Toyland, Aladdin, and Tom Sawyer, and most recently he directed and choreographed the NYC revival of Seesaw. Blevins also directed and choreographed his original musical Count to Ten at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. He has worked with many Tony and Academy Award winning directors and choreographers including Sir Richard Attenborough, Woody Allen, and Bob Fosse. Michael Blevins has performed with many professionals including Michael Douglas, Victor Garber, Brooke Shields, Beth Leavel, and Robert Downey Jr. He has appeared in several Broadway productions including Bring Back Birdie, Neil Simon’s Little Me, and Tony winning Tap Dance Kid in which he created the role “Winslow”. He is most widely known for his portrayal of Mark in the movie A Chorus Line. Most recently, Blevins joined artists around the world to celebrate one of America’s greatest art forms and performed selections from Bob Fosse’s DANCIN’ at City Center in the Career Transition for Dancer’s Benefit Gala.

9) CENTENARY STAGE COMPANY TO HOST OPEN CALL AUDITIONS FOR THE WEIR ON 

AUGUST 27TH.

Centenary Stage company, a professional not for profit theater company located on the campus of Centenary University in Hackettstown NJ, will be holding an open call (AEA & Non-union welcome) for their upcoming production of “The Weir” by Conor McPherson. This production will be produced under an AEA SPT 4 contract, and both AEA members and non-union actors will be seen. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, August 27th from 10am – 6pm. The Weir is a spellbinding, beautiful suspenseful realism combining chilling tales of the supernatural with hilarious banter of a small community in the heart of rural Ireland. In a bar in Sligo, Ireland, local men swap spooky stories in an attempt to impress a young woman from Dublin who recently moved into a nearby "haunted" house. And then she spins a yarn of her own...

11) US OPEN AND ESPN PARTNER WITH ALICIA KEYS’ “HELL’S KITCHEN”

TO CREATE UNIQUE MUSIC COLLABORATION FOR THE 2024 US OPEN

 

Integration to Feature Music from the 13-Time Tony-Nominated

Broadway Musical, on Broadcast and Throughout the Tournament

The USTA and ESPN today announced a multi-layered collaboration with Alicia Keys’ Broadway Musical Hell’s Kitchen, that will see the music of this show cascade across channels and platforms over the three weeks of the US Open.

 

Key among this collaboration will be the utilization of a custom remix of the song, “Kaleidoscope,” from Keys’ 13-time Tony-nominated musical, created for this year’s event. This remix will be featured in the US Open Manifesto Video, produced by longtime production partner Boomshot, and debut on Opening Night of the Main Draw, August 26. It will also be seen on broadcast, both on ESPN in the U.S. and in more than 200 countries across the globe, and in Arthur Ashe Stadium and the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center throughout the course of the two weeks of the Main Draw, through September 8.  The Manifesto Video is narrated by the 2024 Tony Award winner for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in Hell’s Kitchen, Kecia Lewis. In addition, two-time Tony nominee and GRAMMY-nominated actress Shoshana Bean, who also stars in Hell’s Kitchen, will perform the National Anthem on Opening night.

 

In addition to the manifesto video, ESPN will leverage the custom Kaleidoscope remix and footage from the USTA shoot featuring bucket drummers shot throughout New York City and on court in Arthur Ashe Stadium for their promotional campaign to drive tune-in of the 2024 US Open. ESPN Marketing is also using featured VO from Hell’s Kitchen actress Tony Award winner Kecia Lewis in the campaign. 

 

Partnering with Hell’s Kitchen falls directly in line with both the 2024 US Open’s marketing campaign, “Spectacular Awaits” and theme, “Celebrating the Power of Tennis.” The USTA has made a concerted effort to reach new and different audiences with the goal of growing interest and increasing accessibility to the sport, which provides unparalleled health and wellness benefits.

 

The ESPN Marketing promotional campaign will launch on August 20 and will run across all linear, digital, social platforms through the 2024 US Open.  The Kaleidoscope track will be integrated into ESPN Production through the tournament as well.

Theater Thursday - Cellino v. Barnes

Who: Recommended for Ages 16 and Up

When: Now Extended Through December 1, 2024

Ross Cellino and Steve Barnes were a notorious legal duo who first teamed up in the late 1990s. They were among the first, if not the first, to advertise on TV. The pair is brilliantly depicted by Eric William Morris and Noah Weisberg respectively, who expertly straddle the line between evil genius and clownish buffoon. While this makes for a frightening combination in an attorney, especially in one opposing you in court or elsewhere, it makes for a hilarious play. You are definitely going to want to see this amusing dark comedy!
