I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

8) THE CELL TO KICK OFF 2021 SEASON WITH “LIFE IS DRAG”
FEATURING THE DRAG PORTRAITS OF RACHEL RAMPLEMAN
February 13 – March 28

Nancy Manocherian's the cell theatre (Artistic Director Kira Simring) presents its first residency of 2021, LIFE IS DRAG, an exhibition showcasing the video portraits of Rachel Rampleman. Exploring subjects such as gender, artifice and spectacle, Rampleman documents the most innovative and singular performers of the currently exploding international alt-drag and burlesque scenes, a portion of which have been filmed throughout the pandemic at the cell’s space on West 23rd Street. Opening February 13th on the Gallery Floor, this exhibit is free and open to the public. Patrons are required to follow all city mandated COVID-19 precautions including mandatory mask wearing, limited capacity, filling out a contact-free survey for symptoms and potential exposure, and a digital temperature check upon entry.

Rachel Rampleman utilizes processes ranging from directorial to curatorial to anthropological to showcase exuberantly irrepressible personalities who revel in challenging clichés associated with masculinity and femininity. A sampling of subjects featured in LIFE IS DRAG include Girls Girls Girls (the world's first and only all-female Mötley Crüe tribute band), Tazzie Colomb (the world's longest competing female bodybuilder), and LACTIC Incorporated (an avant-garde clothing brand that takes the detritus of corporate life and reinterprets it into one-of-a-kind structural garments that challenge the polarization of gender) as well as drag and burlesque stars Untitled Queen, Fem Appeal, Darlinda Just Darlinda, C'etait BonTemps, Chartruice, Mimi Silk, Dick TransDyke, JAX, Robyn Edges, Sham Payne, Just JP, Stixen Stones, Kiara Chimera, Barbie Crash, Bunny Wonderland, Robin from Human Resources, Geo Soctomah Neptune, Jayden Jamison, Mike Hawk, Arabella LaDessé, Bender Bluefish, and Zayn-X.

LIFE IS DRAG includes more than 4 hours of video featuring over 60 artists from all around the globe. Rampleman plans to create nearly 40 more video portraits during her residency and incorporate many of those into the exhibition.

LIFE IS DRAG opens Saturday, February 13 at 6PM at the cell (338 W. 23rd Street) and runs Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM-6PM through March 28, 2021. Follow the cell on instagram at @thecelltheatre for updates or go to www.thecelltheatre.org for upcoming events.

9) Ice Theatre of New York
presents
2021 City Skate Pop Up Concerts
at The Rink at Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park
February 18-19, 2021 at 10:45am

Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) presents City Skate Pop Up Concerts as part of Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park's Kids Week on Thursday, February 18 and Friday, February 19, 2021 at 10:45am at The Rink at Bryant Park. ITNY performers include Ella Bauer, Gage and Oona Brown, Val Levine, and Sally Jean Watkins, with choreography by Joel Dear, Tanya Douglass, Jody Sperling, and Douglas Webster. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit https://bryantpark.org/programs/kids-week.

Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 10:45am
Performing apprentice Ella Bauer skates to "Putting on the Ritz," choreographed by coach Tanya Douglass. With big dreams for a nine-year-old, Ella is aiming for the Olympics in 2030.

Professional soloist Val Levine will perform Arctic Memory, a visually beautiful piece and environmentally conscious creation about Global Warming by dance choreographer Jody Sperling. This version of Arctic Memory is adapted from material Sperling developed during a 43-day polar science mission to the Arctic. The costume is a long cape, hand-painted with designs suggestive of Arctic pack ice melting and the sound scape is taken from the actual sounds of the Arctic ice pack moving as it melts. The work also draws inspiration from modern-dance pioneer Loïe Fuller (1862-1928).

Friday, February 19, 2021 at 10:45am
Gage and Oona Brown will perform their competitive free dance choreographed by Joel Dear, which just last month won them the Silver medal at the US National Junior Ice Dance Championships. Coached by Inesa Bucevica and Joel Dear, they skate to "Nothing Else Matters" by MetallicaMarlisa Punzalan and Los Últimos Románticos.

Professional ensemble member Sally Jeanne Watkins will perform O Mio Babbino Caro, a beautiful, lyric ITNY piece choreographed by Douglas Webster.

10) CO-CREATOR OF CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS, X-MEN, IRON MAN, THOR...AND MORE
COMIC BOOK LEGEND JACK KIRBY’S STORY COMES ALIVE
IN ACCLAIMED “KING KIRBY” AUDIO DRAMA STARRING STEVEN RATTAZZI

Six time Best Selling New York Times author Fred Van Lente and four-time New York Times Critics’ Pick playwright Crystal Skillman, in association with the Broadway Podcast Network, are pleased to announce the premiere of their four-episode mini-series audio drama King Kirby, based on their hit Off-Broadway show by the same name. A true-life story about Jack Kirby, the man who co-created the Marvel universe, King Kirby is an epic comic book story of the most famous cartoonist you never heard of. This audio drama features original music composed by award-winning Bobby Cronin (whose other works with Skillman include Mary and Max, Rain and Zoe Save the World, and Concrete Jungle.). The podcast premiered on Wednesday, February 10th exclusively from the Broadway Podcast Network and wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Find it at bpn.fm/KingKirby

Heroes aren’t born, they’re made. Born in the Lower East Side slums, a veteran of the battlefields of France, Jack Kirby co-created CAPTAIN AMERICA, THE AVENGERS, THE X-MEN, IRON MAN, THOR, and many other legendary characters. But Kirby had his biggest fight after his comic books became an international sensation: He had to fight for his name, and the recognition he was denied.

From the Jewish ghetto of New York's Lower East Side to the battlefields of France to the Senate hearings of the 1950s, King Kirby is the heartbreaking yet inspirational story about a man who pours his quintessentially Twentieth Century life into his comics, only to make the fateful mistake that sends him into obscurity while his creations become known to every person on Earth.

AUDIENCES NOW INVITED TO SUBMIT THEIR OWN

SERMON CHALLENGE

Broadway On Demand, the theater-focused streaming platform, continues to stream the La Jolla Playhouse digital Without Walls (WOW) series, featuring Alyce Smith Cooper and Shammy Dee’s Spittin’ Truth to Power While Light Leaping for the People, and is now calling for submissions to their Sermon Challenge.

Audiences and artists alike are invited to – using Shammy’s music and Alyce’s words – spit their own truth and join the project by creating their own version of the “Sermon” video using dance, spoken word, a paintbrush or whatever kind of interpretation they choose.

Submissions can be made, and more information can be found, at: https://lajollaplayhouse.org/wow-goes-digital/light-leaping/sermon-challenge/

La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls (WOW) series offers an invitation to rethink theatre through intriguing and playful experiences. This world premiere brings world-class artists directly to you, fostering a connection with each other and allowing art to flourish.

Spittin’ Truth to Power While Light Leaping for the People is an intergenerational piece using images, music and storytelling styles reminiscent of the griot. Between fire and brimstone preaching, the intimate vulnerability of prayer, and the invitation to fellowship, renowned San Diego poet and Playhouse Leadership Council member Alyce Smith Cooper and acclaimed DJ and musician Shammy Dee are reaching to penetrate the hearts of the people. This three-part spoken verse will encompass the juxtaposition of past/present, yin/yang, male/female with the dream of transformations hoped for and imagined. It is both a personal moment and a collective piece – a springing forward into a leap of light.

The current Without Walls projects can be streamed now on Broadway on Demand at https://www.broadwayondemand.com/series/5HSxbUrVGQB4-la-jolla-playhouse-digital-wow-series

12) VIRTUAL PRODUCTION OF
MEGILLAH CYCLE
BY ITZIK MANGER
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MIKE BURSTYN
TO DEBUT FEBRUARY 21

The Congress for Jewish Culture will continue its International Virtual Yiddish Theater series with MEGILLAH CYCLE, featuring an all-star international cast, directed and adapted by Mike Burstyn from Itzik Manger’s modernist take on the traditional Purim play.

This exciting new production will premiere on Sunday, February 21 at 2:30 pm EST, where it will remain indefinitely

In 1936, the enfant terrible of Yiddish literature, Itzik Manger, published a cycle of poems shattering time and history by updating the Biblical story of Queen Esther to Eastern Europe of the 20th century. In 1965, with music by Dov Seltzer and under the direction of Shmuel Bunim, the Family Burstein opened a musical production of the cycle that opened a bright new chapter for Yiddish in Israel and would eventually find its way to Broadway’s Golden Theatre in 1968. The original cast recording of The Megilla of Itzik Manger was released by Columbia Record.

MEGILLAH CYCLE will be presented in Yiddish with subtitle translation, and features interspersed English commentaries written by the late Joe Darion (Man of La Mancha)

THROUGH LABOR DAY

NY PopsUp, an unprecedented and expansive festival featuring hundreds of pop-up performances (many of which are free of charge and all open to the public) that will intersect with the daily lives of New Yorkers, has been announced by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. This series of events, intended to revitalize the spirit and emotional well-being of New York citizens with the energy of live performance while jumpstarting New York’s struggling live entertainment sector, is a private / public partnership overseen by producers Scott Rudin and Jane Rosenthal, in coordination with the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) and Empire State Development (ESD)The Festival will serve as a “pilot program,” creating the state’s first large-scale model for how to bring live performance back safely after this prolonged COVID-related shutdown. The programming for NY PopsUp will be curated by the interdisciplinary artist Zack Winokur, in partnership with a hand-selected council of artistic advisors who represent the diversity of New York’s dynamic performing arts scene and artistic communities. NY PopsUp will launch on Saturday, February 20 and run through Labor Day. The Festival will reach its climax with the 20th Anniversary of the Tribeca Film Festival and The Festival at Little Island at Pier 55, bringing the total number of performances to more than 1,000. NY PopsUp is being coordinated in lock step with state public health officials and will strictly adhere to Department of Health (DOH) COVID-19 protocols.

The events produced by NY PopsUp, in addition to being free of charge, will be staged across every type of neighborhood and district in all five boroughs of New York City, throughout upstate and into Western New York. As the current realities of COVID-19 make mass gatherings and large, destination-style events impossible, NY PopsUp will meet New York City and State residents where they are, infusing their daily lives with the surprise and joy of live performance. The hundreds of free, pop-up events that constitute NY PopsUp will make stages out of New York’s existing landscapes, including iconic transit stations, parks, subway platforms, museums, skate parks, street corners, fire escapes, parking lots, storefronts, and upstate venues, transforming everyday commutes, local communities, and locations never used for performances into canvases of awe and exhilaration. Instead of there being masses of audience members at a handful of events, this Festival is a mass of events, each for a safe and secure ‘handful’ of audience members.

As COVID restrictions begin to loosen, the model that NY PopsUp builds for holding safe live events will pave the way for, and incept the reopening of, multidisciplinary flexible venues (“flex venues”) throughout New York State to open and participate in the Festival. These will be the very first indoor performances since the pandemic began and will mark a major moment in New York’s recovery efforts. Not only will these indoor events be a symbol to the entire world that New York is back, they will also be a key step in the long process of getting tens-of-thousands of arts professionals around New York State back to work; and a bridge to getting Broadway and all of the New York cultural world open. These Flex Venues are established union and non-union performance spaces without fixed seating and are thus able to be adapted for social distancing. Examples of these venues would include The SHED, The Apollo, Harlem Stage, La MaMa, and The Glimmerglass Festival’s Alice Busch Opera Theater. All indoor events will strictly follow Department of Health public health and safety guidance.

The public will encounter a range of artists representing all areas of performance – from theater to dance, from poetry to comedy, from pop music to opera, and so much more. Among the confirmed artists are Hugh JackmanRenée FlemingAmy Schumer, Alec BaldwinChris RockMatthew BroderickSarah Jessica ParkerIsabel LeonardNico MuhlyJoyce DiDonatoJohn Early and Kate BerlantPatti SmithMandy PatinkinRaja Feather KellyJ’Nai BridgesKenan ThompsonGavin CreelGarth FaganLarry OwensQ-TipBilly Porter, Conrad TaoBobbi Jene Smith and Or SchraiberTina LandauRhiannon GiddensAparna NancherlaAnthony RodriguezJonathan GroffSavion GloverDormeshia Sumbry-EdwardsChris CelizChristine GoerkeKelli O’HaraDev HynesPhoebe RobinsonSara MearnsGeorge SaundersCaleb TeicherDanielle BrooksJeremy DenkIdina Menzel, Sondra RadvanovskyGaby MorenoDavóne TinesJerrod CarmichaelTaylor MacSutton FosterJessie Mueller, and Courtney ToPanga Washington, among many others. The events themselves will ignite imaginative collisions of different artforms.

During the run of the festival, NY PopsUp will grow in its scale, volume of performances, and geographical footprint, with events throughout New York State, from the Bronx to Staten Island, from Buffalo to Suffolk County, from the Hudson Valley to the Capitol.

NY PopsUp will reach its apex over the summer, as we celebrate both the 20th Anniversary of the Tribeca Film Festival (June 9 through 20) and the opening of one of New York’s most highly anticipated projects: Little Island (June).

More details about NY PopsUp will be announced soon. Please note that, given the impromptu nature and surprise element of the pop-up format, not all performances will be announced in advance. Please follow @NYPopsUp on Twitter and Instagram for the latest.

16) Theater Resources Unlimited
and The Storyline Project
announce
2021 TRU Voices
New Plays Virtual Reading Series.
Submissions now open
through Friday, February 26, 2021

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is taking submissions for the 2021 TRU Voices New Plays Reading Series submissions, with a deadline of February 26, 2021.TRU will pay for developmental readings of two or three new plays with the generous support of R.K. Greene and The Storyline Project. To apply, fill out an application: PRS21Application (writable PDF) or PRS21Application (Word), and send toTRUPlaySubmissions@gmail.com.

The TRU Voices New Plays Reading Series is planned for June 2021 and will consist of 2-3 new works presented in one performance each virtually on OnTheStage.com. Created to nurture producers as well as writers, TRU Voices seeks producer-driven projects; however, as the only non-profit dedicated to developing producers TRU connects all finalists with both an experienced producer and a "rising through the ranks" associate producer.

Making this an even more unique opportunity for writers, each reading will be followed by a "Dollars and Sense" panel discussion with prominent New York producers, general managers and artistic directors focusing on potential venues, marketing, budgeting and a developmental trajectory for the work. TRU literary manager Cate Cammarata adds, "Since we guarantee three industry professional readers for every submission, often one of our readers will express interest in meeting a writer, even if their script isn't a finalist." She goes on to say: "I have heard others boast of helping thousands of plays get produced - we've actually been supporting new work for over 20 years, and now TRU is recognized as being one of the leaders in early development."

Producers and theater companies are invited to submit new work that they are interested in developing; of course writers are invited to submit and are strongly encouraged to find a sponsoring producer for their work. "Use this as an opportunity to form a relationship with a potential producer, for our series and perhaps for the future," suggests TRU executive director Bob Ost.

TRU members may submit free of charge. All non-members must submit a $25 application fee, which is applicable towards our $95 annual membership. If selected for the series, at least one member of the producing/writing team must be a paid member of TRU. There is a one-week extension for TRU members and plays with a producer attached. These submissions are due on March 5, 2021.

For complete guidelines, please visit https://truonline.org/2021-play-guidelines/ Applications and a detailed history of plays that have participated in the series can be found here: https://truonline.org/tru-voices-details-and-history/.  Application submissions are $25 with a $10 feedback letter upon request. Join TRU and submit as a member, for no fee (except for feedback, if you request it). To encourage writers to join TRU, there is a playwright discounted membership: $75 (regularly $95).

Teaching Baldwin: The ART of Social Justice

2/17/2021 at 2:00 PM

James Baldwin was one of the greatest writers of the 20th Century, and a journey through his work reveals the American tragedy of race and class and their effects on history and politics in our democratic society. An essayist, novelist and a Black gay man, Baldwin’s acerbic analysis of America is still relevant as are his questions about this country’s desire for a more perfect union in the time of Black Lives Matter.  This workshop will provide insightful avenues to discuss the politics of democracy in a racially charged time, by infusing Baldwin’s work into the conversation and addressing the humanity of a multi-racial nation. It will be led by journalist, Two River Theater Community Relations Manager and VP of the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation Gilda Rogers, with special guest Alan C. Burgess.
