I started this blog with one daughter, kept it up with the other, to spend time together doing something we enjoyed.
However, things change and people evolve. My daughters are older, busier, and not as interested in writing.
From now on this blog will be mostly mom with occasional contributions from my daughters and maybe even my husband.
Nothing else will change. We'll still focus on sharing fun places to go, fun things to do, and more, and we would  still love to hear your views too

SUMMER IN THE (OLD) CITY
Historic Philadelphia, Inc. Opens for 2018 Summer Season

Historic Philadelphia, Inc. opens the 2018 season of Once Upon A Nation on Memorial Day Weekend with the return of the special and unique Tippler’s Tour and Independence After Hours Tour, flag raising with Betsy at the Betsy Ross House, new Once Upon A Nation stories, and the all new Summer Sounds at the Square music series. Beginning Saturday, May 26, Philadelphia’s historic district shines brightly with storytellers and History Makers, who bring history to life right where it all happened. With the ongoing Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival in Franklin Square, in addition to the new music series, as well as a new permanent exhibit and Flag Fest at the Betsy Ross House, Historic Philadelphia can fill your summer days and nights with fun and tastes of the past.

The award-winning Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Benches return with all new stories for 2018, where visitors can hear free stories of Lucretia Mott, a ferocious leader in the fight to win equal rights for women and people of color in the 19th century, and the “Awesome Caroline LeCount” who, nearly 100 years before Rosa Parks, took a stand to assure that all people of color have equal rights to take a seat on Philadelphia’s newly integrated streetcars. Guests can hear a story, grab a storytelling flag, get a sticker, and use the rest of the 13 benches to explore America’s most historic square mile and all of its treasured attractions. Conclude the bench crawl with a final story in Franklin Square after which visitors can swap a filled-in flag for a free ride on the Parx Liberty Carousel. Additional new stories for 2018 include “Like Father, Unlike Son: The Revolutionary Split of Benjamin Franklin and William Franklin” about the effects the War of Independence had on Patriot, Benjamin Franklin and his son, William Franklin, who by remaining loyal to England, loses his relationship with his father-forever; “Dr. George Logan and the Logan Act” about a Quaker doctor who takes international diplomacy into his own hands; and “Saving Valley Forge” which showcases the drama-filled opening of Washington’s Headquarters to the public for the first time. For over 20 years, Historic Philadelphia has been telling stories of the headline-grabbers and the unsung everyday heroes from our nation’s past.

Also on Memorial Day Weekend, Historic Philadelphia brings back its popular immersive walking tours: Independence After Hours and two seasonal versions of the Tippler’s Tour. Independence After Hours (May – October) is an evening walking tour, created in partnership with Independence National Historical Park, where guests have the exclusive opportunity to visit inside Independence Hall at night after public hours, experiencing what those late nights of the summer of 1776 were like for the Founding Fathers. The evening begins with a delicious three-course meal at the Historic City Tavern where Colonial townspeople entertain guests. The Colonial host then “sneaks” visitors into the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall), where visitors witness several Founding Fathers deep in discussion over the creation of the Declaration of Independence. On the weeklyTippler’s Tours (one version, with Benjamin Franklin, from May to August, and a second version for the holiday season from November to December), visitors join a Colonial host to hear stories and drinking traditions with fun and lighthearted songs and toasts of the era.

Vangeline Theater
presents
Elsewhere
May 24 - 26, 2018 at 8pm

Vangeline Theater, with renowned Japanese composer and musician Yuka C. Honda (Japan) and butoh dancer Vangeline, perform the World Premiere of Elsewhere from May 24 - 26, 2018 at 8 pm at Gibney Dance: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center, 280 Broadway (Entrance at 53A Chambers Street). Tickets are $15 in advance ($20 at the door) and can be purchased at https://gibneydance.org/performance/pop/vangeline-and-yuka-c-honda-elsewhere/ or by calling (646) 837-6809.

Elsewhere is a story of migration and cultural encounters celebrating the life of Japanese pioneer Omoto Tannaker (1842-1916). In 1860, the Japanese woman joined the Great Dragon Circus on its tour around the world, but in December 1873, Omoto-san's infant Godie died in Sunderland, England. The tomb of Little Godie was the first Japanese monument erected in England in the 19th century.

A woman of courage, the Japanese performer Omoto Tannaker joins the rank of often-forgotten women athletes and pioneers, who left their countries of origin to defy cultural norms and expectations. She was one of the first Japanese women to obtain a passport; her life coincides with the onset of Japan's modernization during the Edo Period. She married a foreigner (a Dutchman), and her children were of mixed race,

Omoto-San, a very skilled acrobat, "showed a remarkable technique to slide down an 45 inclined rope" (Yoshioda). These impressive physical skills undoubtedly mirror her talents of adaptation, as well as shadow the numerous challenges she faced when integrating into the social fabric of her recipient community at the turn of the 19th Century.

This piece explores the themes of immigration and cultural hybridity from a female perspective, articulated through butoh language and improvised music. Women are often the unsung heroes of history; behind all significant cultural movements and changes in history, the lives of countless women can be found, as well as countless voices that have been silenced. As we challenge our collective memory by telling the stories of women pioneers, we can reconstruct our present and carve out a much-needed space to redefine the importance of women's participation in society.
