Our view: The New York Spring Spectacular truly was spectacular. It would be enough of a reason to see the show just to see the Rockettes dance. However, there is much more to the show than that. There is music, there is singing, and there is actually a whole story to it. The story is not the most original. It is a cross between It's A Wonderful Life and one of those movies where somebody wants to save the old farmstead or something like that. Even the twist in the end, you can see coming from a mile away. However, everything else about the show is so great that it is easy to look past the cliched plot. The acting and singing are good. Even Derek Hough is good and not just when he is dancing. If you saw him when he was on Nashville, where his acting was not so good, don't let that keep you away. He is surprisingly good in this. Maybe, being in a dance show is more in his element even if he still has to act in it. His female co-star, Laura Benanti, who has also appeared on TV in Nashville, is a true triple threat. She acts, sings, and dances and does them all well. She even gets to dance with the Rockettes here. The Rockettes, of course, are the highlight of the show. They appear in several dance numbers in the show including one set to Taylor Swift's Welcome to New York like in the commercial for the show and another number that seems like it would be a traditional Rockettes number with top hats and canes. Even if the Rockettes were doing nothing but dancing the same number for the whole hour and a half, the show would still be worth seeing, the fact that there is so much more to the show just makes it that much better. All, we can say is if you have the opportunity in your life to see the Rockettes performing live, you should definitely take it. If you want to see them in the New York Spring Spectacular, you better go quick, even with the performances that have recently been added, the show still only runs through May 7.
