Ten Really Fun Games

A fun thing to do with your family in the winter time when it is too cold to go outside is play board games. In our family, we especially love games that make you think. We also like games that are different all the time so that they never get boring. Below, are ten of our favorite games. We would highly recommend all of these games for hours of fun.

Me - Really fun games, wow! Here are five.

1) Can You Name Five - You have to name five things in a specific category before the time is up. It is amazing how the first few things come to you really quickly, and you struggle to remember the last few. Even though this game is mostly for teen and adults, it can easily be adapted for younger kids by choosing categories for them that they would know and not using the timer.
2) Encore - You have to think of songs in certain categories and sing them. This is a great game for anyone who loves to sing whether you are good at it or not. Also, you do not have to sing the whole song or even get all the words right so don't worry if you are bad at remembering the words to songs. If your family is known to frequently burst into song like ours, you will really love this game.
3) The Big Bang Theory Fact or Fiction - A trivia game great for any Big Bang Theory Fan especially anybody who watches the show all the time. If you are not interested in The Big Bang Theory, there are also trivia games based on other TV shows like the Walking Dead Trivia game or trivia games based on other subjects like food or history.
4) Apples to Apples -  When it is your turn, you pick a category card. Everyone else has to choose a card that they think best fits the category, It is funny to see what totally unrelated things people try to connect. Apples to Apples is also available in a junior version for younger kids.

5) Flapdoodle - You pick a card, it tells you something crazy to do. For instance, you might be asked to a hum a song in order to move ahead or you might have to reverse the direction of the game play. It is so funny to see the things that people will do to win in this game. This is a great game for people of all ages.

Mom - Here are five more games we love.

6) Trivial Pursuit - If your head is filled with trivia like mine, this is a great way to put it to use. There are so many different versions of Trivial Pursuit now. There are versions based on specific topics like television, American history or rock and roll. There are versions that are based on even more specific things like The Beatles or  The Nightmare Before Christmas. There are verisons that are based on particular decade like the 60s or the 90s. There are versions that are good for kids like Trivial Pursuit Junior or the Disney or Nickelodeon versions. There is even a family edition with easier questions for kids and harder questions for adults.  There is a version for just about everyone of just about every age, taste and/or interest.
7) Taboo - Trying to get someone to guess a word without being able to use the most obvious clue words is a lot of fun as well as a great way to increase your ability to describe things. It is also a lot harder than it sounds. Taboo also comes in a junior verison.
8) Scattegories - This game makes writing lists fun. Play against other people or even just play against the timer to see how many categories you can find words for that start with a particular letter.  There are several different versions of Scattegories including a junior version.
9)  Oddly Obvious - Similar to Taboo except this time instead of coming up with a word or phrases to describe something you are given a word  or phrase and then a list of words and/or phrases one of which says the same thing as the first word or phrase but in different words. It is harder than it sounds because the connection between the first word or phrase and the second word or phrase is not always so obvious at first glance. However, it is a lot of fun trying to come up with the correct answer before your opponents.
10) Switcheroo - A fun game similar to crazy eights but about switching letters and topics instead of suits and number. You have to come up  with an answer to fit the topic and the letter being played or if you have the right cards you can change the letter or topic. The first person to play all their cards wins.

For more about these and other games see our previous post Endless Games or our Tips for Tuesday: Misc. posts where we often recommend games. We also be talking more about board games in general and Trivial Pursuit in particular in future posts.

And that's our view. What are some fun games you would recommend?

Tune in tomorrow for Tips for Tuesday.

  1. These games look amazing! My husband and I play games during the winter months so that we don't get cabin fever to bad. I love Trivial Pursuit, but never played the TV version. Will have to check this out. :)

  13. Hi Jeryl!

Apples to Apples and Scattergories are two games we like as well. If you REALLY love games that make you think, you guys would love Cranium! It makes you think, recall facts, gets you to be artistically creative, aaaaaand....makes you sing songs. An awesome night of brain sparking, and laughing at yourself. There is even a Jr version of that. Both are awesome. There is also Brainquest (easier than Cranium), and for just a fun silly game, Quelf. Sounds weird, and the board looks simple, but it (and it's Jr version) are fun to play.

Love hearing about other families spend time like this together!

    Thanks,

    Alexander
