What: The Akeley Hall of African Mammals
Where: American Museum of Natural History
200 Central Park W.
New York, NY
Who: All ages
The Akeley Hall of African Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History is named for the man who first conceived it and collected the original specimens for it. Multi-hyphenate Carl Akelely was a biologist, conservationist, nature photographer, taxidermist, and more.
The central part of the exhibit is a herd of eight elephants. Other dioramas in the collection include rhinoceroses, lions, zebras, mandrills, giant elands, and more. They provide a glimpse into the diverse topographies of Africa and the animals that inhabit them. Signage on site offers further information on both the area and the animals themselves.
